"Ahhh finally!" Eleven year old Layna   Livrez-Mots closed her bedroom door with relief. She had just spent the last three hours babysitting her two younger brothers, Roy and Troy. With a sigh, the young witch sat down and started to read.
Suddenly wood splintered everywhere as Roy and Troy appeared out of nowhere. They had flown right through Layna's bedroom door on toy broomsticks.
"Weeeeeeeeee!" They shouted in unison. The bedroom door behind them looked like a donut, with a big hole right in the middle. Their big sister started feeling dizzy as they were flying small, but fast laps around her room.
"Ugh! Boys! I just finished watching you two! Can't you guys give me a break? Go pester Dad instead," Cried Layna. "Dad has told you a thousand times not to fly on your brooms in the house, look what you've done!"
"Sorry sissy," Said Roy, suspended in the air.
Layna's heart melted. Unable to stay mad she smiled.
"Fine I forgive you, I still have to tell Dad."
"Awwww, Layna do you HAVE to tell Dad?" Whined Troy.
"Well I need to get my door fixed. And I don't have a wand to do it, and I don't know how. Now get out, and take your broomsticks with you." With broomsticks in hand, Roy and Troy jumped out of the hole without hesitation. Rolling her eyes, Layna opened her door and walked out like she would on a normal day.
Then she found her parents in the kitchen preparing dinner.
Pots were floating in the air, vegetables flying all over the place, and the steam of rice rising from a large pot.
"Hi honey," greeted Mom. "How was your day? Did your brothers behave today?"
"Up until five minutes ago, when they flew their brooms through my bedroom door, again."
"I guess I have to come fix it, again," Answered Dad. Layna's dad was a muggle-born and her Mom was a half-blood. Witch means that Layna and her three siblings were half-bloods too. Her brothers, Roy and Troy were always making trouble around the house. Troy was nine years old and Roy was seven. They seriously looked like twins. Often they reminded Layna of Fred and George      Weasley. Lastly there was Emley who going into her seventh year at Hogwarts. Emley was sorted into Gryffindor. Speaking of Hogwarts, both of their parents had been sorted into Ravenclaw.
Since their Dad has been raised in the muggle world, he wanted his kids to go to a muggle school before Hogwarts. Layna was grateful for this. Without muggle school, she would not have known math, science, or have been able to read! But the hardest part was making sure that she didn't say or do anything related to the wizarding world. On the last day of school before Layna's first year of Hogwarts, Layna was really sad to say goodbye to her muggle friend, Azure.
"Reparo," muttered Dad. In a matter of seconds, Layna's bedroom door had returned to its original state.
"Thanks Dad," praised Layna. "Oh and has my Hogwarts letter come in yet? I keep waiting and waiting and waiting and it never comes. I want to go to Diagon Alley and get my wand and get more books."
"Layna, be patient. And maybe look behind you."
As the young witch turned around, she saw large tawny owl flying towards the opened window in her bedroom. In its clutched talons, two letters with green writing and a red Hogwarts wax seal.
"Oh my gosh! It's here! It's finally here!" Exclaimed Layna.
"You better go talk to your Mom." Said Dad. "We will need to go to Diagon Alley tomorrow."
"Ok," said Layna, holding back a squeal.
Five minutes later, Layna found her Mother setting the table.
"Hey Mom, Dad said we're going to Diagon Alley tomorrow. Is that ok?"
"Yes, of course it is sweetie. Look at you. So helpful. Your Grandmother would be so proud of you." A small, silent tear rolled down her mother's cheek.
She was talking about Grandmother Kailenna. A mystery indeed.
