Listen, those three things above, are generally very different things that can get lost in the fanfiction world.

There is a fair bit of fanfiction that is mainly fanon, because it's fanfiction, it's not going to be a word for word script with nothing changed. However, there are certain points of embellishment that fit into fanon.

Fanon and headcanon are super similar, so I'll use both throughout this meaning the same thing. Fanon, or headcanons could be a ship like Stucky being included in your story, or someone being scared of birds, so on. They're very harmless and it's always amazing to insert them into your story here and there to add even more originality.

Now, AUs are where you need to put some form of "Warning" or notice. AU means Alternate Universe, as in, completely different from the canon (confirmed) universe. I personally love AUs, they're so creative and interesting, and unique. But, there should be some hint that it's an AU before the Reader starts reading.

I get it, people should be able to figure out it's an AU, it isn't that hard, but it's still nice to clear things up. Because if people are new to the fandom or something, we don't want them thinking there's a sudden world change.

Even if it's an AU, keeping some shred of the former character the same is very important. Whether it be their personality, super hero name, powers, a certain tattoo or scar, so on. We don't want it to feel like we're walking into an original story with the only thing from the fandom being names and looks.

Requests are open, so is asking questions!
