You're not stupid (Virat-Jassi)

"You think I can do it, Virat Bhaiya?" Jassi asked nervously and all he wanted at the moment, Virat figured out, was assurance.

Virat put an arm around Jassi and that instantly seemed to comfort jassi' nerves.

"I believe you can do it, Jassi." Virat said with firmness, looking directly at Jassi.

Jassi averted his eyes. He wasn't sure if Virat Bhaiya should be so confident of him.

"I don't think I should be in the playing XI, Virat Bhaiya!" Jassi had said it out before he could think over it.

Virat looked at him shocked.

"Jass, one bad game doesn't define your talent. You're the best." Virat said impatiently. He hated the fact that Jassi was doubting himself. He believed so much in Jassi. Ro did. Jinks did. Everyone did. And Jassi should believe in himself too.

"It's not just one game, Virat Bhaiya, it's—" Jassi began.

"Yeah, you're right." Virat said, removing his arm, shocking Jassi. "You read a few stupid articles on social media and start doubting yourself for what—for just one or few matches where you were not at your best? Those people know better? I'm stupid that I back and believe in you guys so much? I'm stupid. That's what you think?"

Virat completed his last bit shouting in frustration, apparently scaring Jassi.

"Virat Bhaiya, I—" Jassi didn't know what to say. He didn't expect Virat Bhaiya to react like this.

"I'm sorry, Virat Bhaiya." Jassi said meekly, gently pulling Virat by his arm to sit. "I didn't mean that."

Virat bit his lips, regretting to shout at Jassi. How could he shout at Jassi?!

He wasn't so good at explaining things like Mahi Bhai. But all he knew was that he didn't like the idea of Jassi doubting himself even a bit. He hated it.

"Virat Bhaiya?"

"I'm sorry, kiddo!" Virat said, finally taking Jassi into a hug. "I didn't mean to shout."

"You are not—stupid, Virat Bhaiya. I mean I can't ever think that." Jassi said slowly. Clearly, he had been more sacred of Virat Bhaiya actually thinking that than Virat Bhaiya shouting at him.

"I know that, Jass." Virat said making Jassi look at him. "I say things I don't mean when I'm upset, you know that, right?"

Had it been the normal Jassi, he would have started defending his Virat Bhaiya by now but he remained silent.

Virat was utterly guilty of shouting at Jassi and Jassi, justifying himself even when he wasn't at fault only made Virat guiltier.

Jassi was about to speak when everyone started shouting for them to come for dinner.

"Let's go, Virat Bhaiya." Jassi said instead.

"Wait, Jass!" Virat said as Jassi looked up. "Promise me you will not think about it? You won't doubt yourself and give your best to the game?"

"I will, Virat Bhaiya!" Jassi said, not meeting Virat's eyes and walked out, leaving a guilty Virat behind.

I was supposed to comfort him, not make him more upset. Virat thought to himself dismally.

Jassi loved his Virat Bhaiya way too much to be upset at him but Jassi had that unsettling feeling in his heart that he had disappointed his Virat Bhaiya. No matter how much Virat Bhaiya denied, Jassi had seen the disappointment in his eyes.

"I won't let you down, Virat Bhaiya, I promise!" Jassi said to himself. If all Virat Bhaiya wanted him to do was to believe in himself, he will do it!

--------------------------------

In the first test match, when Jassi took his five wicket haul, everyone saw a different Jassi who celebrated his wicket fiercely.

Virat ran towards Jassi aggressively and took him in a bone crushing hug, just not caring about the cameras or crowd.

"I told you, Jass!" Virat said in the hug proudly. "I told you!"

"You did, Virat Bhaiya!" Jassi said, blinking away his tears. He has said it before too and if he gets the chance, he will say it again, he owes his achievement to Virat Bhaiya!

Virat ruffled his hair before he let Jassi go. He felt so damn proud of his kid that he wanted to answer back each person who has questioned Jassi.

As the match proceeded, Virat felt Jassi staring at him for third time. He gave a concerned look to Jassi.

Jassi was embarrassed as he caught Virat Bhaiya's eyes. He just gave a guilty smile and turned other side.

Virat frowned. He needed to talk to Jassi.

----------------------------------

"Jassi?" Virat slipped beside Jassi as he finally got him all to himself.

"Virat Bhaiya, I—"

"Jass, I'm so, so proud of you, kiddo!" Virat said reaching out to hug Jassi for the fifth time and repeating the same words again, his voice laced with more and more affection every time he said that. "Didn't I tell you're the best?"

Jassi's eyes sparkled each time he heard his captain say that to him. He would give it all to make his Virat Bhaiya proud. Always.

"I'm sorry, Virat Bhaiya. I—" Jassi began timidly.

"Hey, what are you sorry for, kiddo?" Virat asked cupping his cheeks. He was supposed to apologise to Jassi for that day.

"I disappointed you.." Jassi said tentatively. "..and let you down."

Jassi had bowed his head by now and looked almost close to tears.

"Hey, hey, what are you saying, Jass? Where is it coming from?" Virat asked making Jassi look towards him.

"You've just made me the proudest, kiddo." Virat said with utmost sincerity and Jassi could very much see that. Virat Bhaiya's eyes reflected unfiltered pride every time he took a wicket or had a nice spell.

"Not now, Virat Bhaiya, I was talking of that day when—" Jassi said hesitantly.

Virat was quite shocked that Jassi had taken everything on himself.

"Jass, are you upset with me? I'm sorry, kiddo, I—" Virat said guilty.

"NO, NO! I'm not upset, Virat Bhaiya! How can I be?" Jassi said frantically, alarmed at the thought of being upset with Virat Bhaiya. "You only wanted the best for me. I know you always look out for me. I know, Virat Bhaiya."

Virat smiled and wiped the tear drop shining at the corner of Jassi's eyes with his thumb.

"Then stop thinking about it." Virat said in his I'm-the-elder-brother tone. "I'm just so happy and so proud, Jass, I—"

Virat ruffled Jassi's hair excitedly in an attempted to show his happiness level and finally managed to make Jassi laugh.

"Virat Bhaiya!" Jassi whined as Virat was playing with his hair like a kid and a whining Jassi was so rare that Virat couldn't help pulling his cheeks.

"Yeah, yeah, I'm stupid but I'm just so happy for you, kiddo." Virat said chuckling.

"You're not!" Jassi muttered.

"You're never ever gonna doubt yourself again, Jass, okay? Remember that you're the best." Virat said warmly as Jassi snuggled in him.

"Virat Bhaiya, you are the best. And you don't shout things. You always know the best." Jassi said recalling that he hadn't defended Virat Bhaiya back when he said that. "And you're not—stupid. I've always thought of you as the best." Jassi added innocently.

Virat laughed out listening to him, justifying himself for something which was pretty much right. Though Virat knew Jassi could never say or even think so.

May be Virat could boast about it to Ro? That he had someone who would even defend his stupidity? Virat laughed harder thinking that.

"I love you, kiddo, you're the best!" Virat said while laughing and kissed him at the top of his head.

Jassi looked at him confusedly at first, not knowing why Virat Bhaiya was laughing or what made him suddenly say that but he had his Virat Bhaiya by his side, laughing with him and nothing else mattered.

"I love you more, Virat Bhaiya." Jassi said solemnly and Virat wrapped his arm around him once again.
