The male's footsteps trudged along the steps of the earth as he walked, his black irises not lifting up from his slightly worn-out shoes; shoelaces that had been carelessly done move sideways with each step he took, and the more of the steps he took, the more he began to feel a heavy buildup in his chest. Iffy thoughts cascade through his mind before he lifts his gaze, to the girl that was walking at least ten feet in front of him. As soon as his peer lands on the back of her uniform, the tightening feeling in his chest doubles, making it harder for him to breathe with every passing second. To him, it pained to see someone he spent so much time with, with someone else, and the very fact was enough to kill him. The hollow feeling that followed afterwards makes him look up at the sky, at the clouds, the small petals of cherry blossoms; anywhere but at her.

Perhaps he was unaware of the feelings welling inside his heart. Perhaps he didn't even consider that it was possible.... Until now. And with every passing day, the void in his heart tugged him away from reality. As he lay on bed, his eyes closed, he can only see her face. What was happening? He could only wonder, even though deep down, he knew exactly what it was; he never wanted to admit it, at least not out loud.

She was happy, and that made his ravaged heart thump blood a little more effectively than it did before. But was that all there was to life? Devotion to sport, ultimate sacrificing of self to physical training, drowning himself in studies... He tried. He really did try.

As the days went on, as he stepped out for yet another day of life, there is the figure of her standing in front of his house, her eyes set on the pattern of her outdoor shoes. Copper brown hair that reached slightly below her shoulder flew in an unpleasant way - he didn't need an answer to know that she hadn't bothered with brushing her hair. She never had, although she made an exception lately.

But now she stood, a complete mess of a person, and as Izuki stepped out and closed the gate, he saw tears forming in her dead-looking eyes; she couldn't control it one bit. Hands flew around the basketball player's shoulders, the boy was taken aback but takes a step back right in time to break the fall. He had never been one who knew much about physical contact, and at times like these were the times when he really felt of no use.

Soft, yet uncontrollable sobs are heard, and his hands are stiff as he wondered what to do. He didn't need a proper explanation to understand what had happened.

"Why would he do that to me?"

Now that, was the very first time he had ever seen her cry out loud, heartbroken. His immediate reaction is iffy arms wrapping around her petite figure and a weak pun that doesn't work to cheer her up. What was he thinking? The tight feeling that bothered him for so long went away, and yet, his head felt heavier than before. There wasn't an ounce of relief he felt, and his fingers tremble as he fumbled with the words to say.

"I guess he couldn't handle you the way you can grab the handle of that big bucket in your kitchen."

But maybe that, was why he made a vow. One that he had to stick with, no matter what the odds. The tears that streamed down her face was not something he wanted to have a second helping of, and he had the fear and self-consciousness that he might never be able to keep her happy the way she deserved. What if she cried the same way, because of him?

The thought itself killed him. And that was why...

That was why; He kept her a daydream away.
