If you asked the students of Hawkins High if they knew Kendall Rogers, everyone would say yes.

They'd say they knew her as the girl whose heart was broken by Steve 'The Hair' Harrington.

Kendall and Steve had been best friends for as long as they could remember and over time, the two had gotten feelings for one another. And then they became Hawkins Highs power couple.

Until Steve cheated on Kendall with Nancy Wheeler.

Kendall decided to go to the restrooms before class started and on her way, she was stopped by Barbara Holland who sadly warned her not to go in but Kendall didn't know the girl that well and shook off her warning.

She walked into the restrooms to find Steve and Nancy kissing.

Kendall felt her heart drop as she looked back and forth between the pair who looked at her with wide eyes, starting to make excuses but Kendall didn't listen instead, she ran out of the restroom and then the school entirely.

Jonathan Byers had decided to skip his last class of the day and take photos of the architecture of the school when a crying Kendall ended up in the background in one of his shots. He was confused to why the girl was crying but shook it off, continuing to take photos.

The next day, the whole school was talking about Steve and Nancy and Jonathan quickly connected the dots. At lunch that day, he walked into the cafeteria to find Kendall sitting alone and her own little table.

Jonathan slowly walked over to her table, taking a seat at the other end of it. The two quickly made eye contact and sent each other small smiles

And that's how it started.

Over time, Jonathan took a seat closer and closer to Kendall until they were face to face across from each other, eating in silence. Then after a while, the two began to talk to each other. Just little things to get to know each other.

There they were, the two lonely kids, not realizing how much they needed each other until both of their brothers go missing.
