Let's talk about how we use language in our WIP...

Do you have words you made up?

Yes, lots of them.

Are they based on real words? Are the names of things and people cobbled together out of phonetic sounds or Are they based on real words? How do you come up with these?

Mostly, I personally love doing research on ancient languages and words origins but I often "adulterate" a word or language to use based on its origin.  I like it when words sounds familiar-ish. Like they come from a very old language but the reader isn't quite sure which one. Ancient Languages and cultures can add such an unexpected and rich layer to #worldbuilding.

How do you find names of characters?

I love baby name books and sites. I will spend days looking for names. I also like when names have some deeper meaning in relation to the character's personality traits.  But I also like names that have a fun or funny component.

Do you use words in ways that are contrary to their meaning? Or have characters say things meaning the opposite?

Have you changed the names of things just for your WIP like terms of measurement?

I have one WIP where a mile is a ;section', a meter is a 'stride' or 'stone'
