Sonnet 22: The Poet
(Inspiration 11)

A breath of inspiration sums my days
Of many mad attempts to master th' art
Of poetry through love, the sudden craze
Now overtaking both my head and heart.
'Tis said that only amateurs believe
The fickle muse to keep her constant post,
As though she were a wench that would deceive
A poet's will to pen a better boast.
But what explains the fire with which I write
These very rhymes? 'Tis more than love of thee
That urges all my wit to take its flight
Across the bounds of thought unfettered, free.
       By bounding me in love, thou didst release
       Me from my blockage, granting this increase.
