Sonnet 83: The Poet
(Admonishments 10)

Her love is foul when masked in fairest sweet,
Expressed in naked beauty's show and blushing
The blush of hot desire when lovers meet;
But that's the love of lust, the body's gushing.
Sweet lust disguised in beauty's face is bitter,
Whose joys are brief and sorrows far too long;
Oh master-mistress, thou should'st know it better
To shun that risk, avoiding such a wrong.
Thy love need not the ornament of sense,
Nor need of sight, nor smell, nor sound, nor taste, nor touch,
To know the object of it's sweet offense;
I hope, at least, that thou should'st know that much.
      But now I'm left in doubt and left to pray
      That thou should'st heed these words: "Go not that way!"
