Sonnet 84: The Poet
(Admonishments 11)

She'll whisper words and seal them all in kisses,
But well I know a kiss is not a vow;
She'll pleasure all thy parts and never misses,
But staying faithful she will not know how.
And when thou know'st she lies, she may betray
Thee t'wards the grave—whose heart she'll seem to lack;
And if thou liv'st, thou liv'st in sorrow's pay
To pine the taste of love so bitter-black.
She doth possess thy pleasure, but I have
Thy virtue, truth and constancy and love;
How many thrills of thy release she gave
I'll never know, but I'll have thee improve.
      For through my rhymes, I'll keep thy love alive,
      Whose rhymes won't lie, or cheat, or worse—connive!
