Sonnet 98: Fair Youth
(Faults 9)

Sometimes, in brooding on these gloomy thoughts,
I think on princes that had strength to fight
The limitations of their given lots;
They were possessed of confidence, despite
A world of circumstance encroaching on
Their lives with many interruptions filled
With other people's problems thrust upon
Them—yet their dreams of fame were still fulfilled!
Alas, how great a state of paradise
I've lost upon the winds of presupposed love!
It seems I've built my hopes on honeyed lies,
No sooner used, and sooner still disposed of!
      Such is my given lot: to be abused
      By mistress Chance, leaving me so confused.
