15 : Lung cancer

★★★

Just as she reached her dorm and bid him farewell, she received a call. Frowning at the unknown number, she picked it up.

"Hello Ms. Laila Abdul Kadir?"

"Yes, that's me."

"Your test reports are here. The doctor would like to meet you as soon as possible. Will you be able to come now or should I schedule an appointment for you for tomorrow?"

"I- I will be there in 15 to 20 minutes." Checking her wrist watch, she replied quietly, her breath getting stuck in her throat just thinking about the results.

"Okay."

"Do you live here alone?" It seemed weird coming from a doctor as she peered at her hopefully.

"Yes." She breathed out, not liking her curiosity. "Is everything alright?"

Staring at her with pity for a while, the doctor began. "I am sorry but you are suffering from lung cancer. It is in its last stage and there is no cure for it as of yet. But there are a few treatments-"

She could feel her breath getting knocked out of her lungs. Ah, the irony!

Trying to take deep breaths, she held the table tightly, not listening to even a word the doctor was saying.

"Are- are you okay? Nurse, nurse!"

"I- I'm fine." She managed to whisper as tears streamed down her face.

But what was fine now? Was anything even going to get fine now? She could just think one thing, why her? God, why her?!
