So, my first analysis, and what better than to do an anime which I've nearly finished?

So, Future Diary is fucking entertaining. There's not complaints about that, it was entertaining. But critically analysing it, it kinda falls apart.

What I'll say is this: One thing Future Diary did amazingly well was tension. You have these characters pitted to the death, and you don't know what's gonna happen!

Oh yeah, Spoiler Alert.

Ok, so, my best example would be from the episode where Kousaka managed to get into where Yuno kept Yuki and Hinata using the help of his KING Diary. (That the plot pulled out from his ass, but I'll get to that part later). When Yuno throws one key away, and the other to Kousaka, when Kousaka save Akise and Mao, just when he's about to free Yuki, Yuno shot him in the leg. The tension there is that, oh great, Yuki was right, Yuno was going to try and backstab Kousaka, and now that Kousaka has a faulty leg, he can't run cause a fucking arrow is stabbed in his leg! Hinata is tied up, so she's useless, and Akise and Mao won't make it in time to save their asses. What will Yuno do? Kill Kousaka? Leave with Yuki? I have no fucking clue! That right there is how to create tension, put characters into a scenario where you can't tell what's gonna happen, everyone's gonna get fucked up and it's a great scene.

Another good example of Tension is when Akise, Kousaka, Hinata, Mao and the 8th escape, and Yuki goes after them. When Hinata, Mao and Kousaka try to convince Yuki to ditch Yuno, will Yuki, who is already established as weak and easy to manipulate, give into his friends, or will Yuno's fucked up words keep him? Another way of making great tension.

But... Alas, that's probably the one thing I'll applaud Future Diary for.

Well should I start for where it flaws...

Ah, pacing.

While I don't know how Future Diary managed to do this, the actual episodes are slow paced, and aren't too bad, the way how the actual numbers of the episodes are... a bit fast. For example, while it may've felt like I was watching episode 14, it was actually episode 10, to my surprise, so I dunno, maybe it's just me, but the pacing was just... *facepalm*

Meanwhile, fleshing out characters were atrocious, I can barely remember half of the Players from Future Diary from the top of my fucking head, but the series won't allow sufficient space to flesh them out before they go ka-pow. It'd also be nice to STOP KILLING CHARACTERS SO FAST. I know it's inescapable for a series like this, BUT CHILL FAM! When you kill so many characters so quickly, without giving enough time for me to care about them or to care about the death, stop... While they did get some characterisation in, they had to use after ending animation to explain extra details. And if you don't watch those bits in anime... Your fucking screwed(-ish).

Also, characters backgrounds are all so fucking edgy, we have a character who was nearly raped, we had abuse, we had being addicted to fucking Power Rangers for justice and shit, we had stealing a toy? And when Yuki did a Kanedgy, Shinichiemo, I was like: FUCK YOU!

THAT IS NOT HOW YOU DO CHARACTERISATION, DOING A 180 INTO EDGE!!

It pains me when characters just suddenly change personalities. (A reason why I disliked Bakuman 2 characterisation for Aoki and Nakai, but that's for another day.)

But the elephant in the room is PLOT DEVICES/PLOT POISON/PLOT ARMOUR.

Oh jeez...

So remember Kousaka's KING Diary? That was given to him by 8th, at the right time so they could save Yuki's and Hinata's ass.

When Akise could stay alive long enough for him to figure out Yuno's truth.

So... Future Diary is flawed. But it's entertaining. (Atleast it isn't SAO.)
