The One Where Laurens Meets Ham

It was my sophomore year at Uni and I was doomed to get a new roommate because lucky for me, my old one dropped out. So here I am, nervous as fuck because not only am I getting a new roommate, he's some prodigy, here on a full ride after taking a year at Yale. I, on the other hand, am here from working my ass of for four years with three jobs. So yes, I am a 22 year old sophomore at my Uni but it happens often. Heck some of my friends are in their senior year on scholarships and loans but I don't trust the government so I use my own money, not nonexistent government funds.
My best friend, Peggy, who was also a sophomore (though she's 19) was helping me carry my stuff up to my dorm. Granted, I only had a back pack, a suitcase and trunk with my biggest things. I helped her carry all of her stuff so she offered to help me with mine. "You in the same dorm John?" She asked, dragging my suitcase behind her on its wheels. "Do you know who your roommate is yet?" She's always had a tendency to ask a bunch of questions without expecting a response. "What if he's really weird. Or! Or what if he's really lazy and sleeps half the day like Lafayette's old roommate, wouldn't that be nice."

I stopped listening to her, I instead looked for my dorm room. I was in the same room and I was glad because it has a good view of the courtyard where a lot of kids hang out in the warmer months. That was one thing I loved about Roosevelt University, the dorm rooms weren't the size of a closet.
Peggy gasped, "John this ones yours!" She squealed, "79-A!"

I put down the trunk I was carrying and pulled the key to the room out of my pocket, unlocking the door and swinging it open. Empty.

Peggy scurried into the room and left my suitcase in the middle of the room on the floor, immediately plopping down on the bed to the left. "Huh, guess he's not here yet," she said, I could tell she was disappointed. Peggy was always one to introduce herself to anyone and everyone. It's how we met freshman year.

"Well I for one am glad he isn't here yet because I would love to settle in." I said shoving the trunk in between the wall and the bed Peggy was currently on. I flipped open the clasps and lifted the lid. I pulled out the white sheets and red quilt I had from last year and threw them at Peggy. "Make yourself useful," I said smiling.

She laughed at me and hopped off the bed, gladly putting the sheets on. "Isn't this the same quilt from last year?" She asked, spreading it over the plain sheets.

"Yeah," I said, "I like it." I was in the process of emptying the trunk of the things I needed; my laptop and its cables, a small desk lamp and the softest carpet ever (a gray carpet) that my friends practically lived on when we got snowed into the dorms. I put the lamp on the desk and plugged it in and put the laptop on the left side of the desk.

"So when is this roommate of yours gonna show up?" Peggy asked. She was currently laying across my bed on her stomach, texting her sisters that she was at my dorm so they could join us. And frankly, by now I didn't care, we already had Lafayette and Hercules join us so if Angelica and Eliza wanted to come over they could. John was sort of hoping Angelica would convince Peggy and the boys to go to someone's party or to a club. He loved them to death but sometimes they spent a lot of time in his dorm, too much time, there are times when they just sit on the carpet and do nothing. Peggy's phone chimed and she frowned, "Ugh, Angelica wants me to go to her boyfriend's party. Some back to school bash." She got up and pulled her shoes on, "Anyone wanna come with me?" she asked walking to the door.

Hercules got up off the carpet, "Yeah, I'll come, since John's roommate is MIA."

"Me too, I already told Eliza I was gonna hang out with her anyway," Lafayette got up and walked out the door.

As they left they all waved me off and Peggy hugged me before running out the door after the two boys. I sighed and flopped onto my bed face first.

"Um, is this 79-A?" An unfamiliar voice was muffled by the closed door and it was followed by a series of knocks.

I scrambled up off of my bed and swung open the door to reveal a disheveled looking.... well, kid. He seriously couldn't have been older than 18. He was short, only coming up to my shoulders, and had long black hair, with just enough facial hair to be recognized as a high school senior. "Yeah," is all I could get out.

The kid nearly fell over with relief. "Oh thank goodness," he said before straightening again. he promptly stuck his hand out, "Hamilton," he said.

I just stared for a minute. I blinked a few times before saying, "John Laurens." I grabbed his hand and gave him a small handshake, "Hamilton is a little weird for a first name."

"Oh, well its actually Alexander," he said, walking into the room as I stepped out of the way. "I guess I'll just get settled in then," he said dropping a small backpack on the floor next to a small cardboard box. He opened the box and pulled out white sheets and a blue quilt and made his bed.

"You don't have much do you Alex?" I asked him, sitting on my bed.

He looked up at me and I just smiled at him, kind of nervous because I didn't know him at all. He looked back into his box, "Well I had to get a laptop somehow," he mumbled.

"No I'm not even kidding Peggy. The kid pulled out a laptop from like 2009." I said into my phone.

"C'mon John don't be like that," Peggy said, "the poor kid just got there after being lost for the entire day, give him a break."

"I'll try," I looked at the time, 10:43 pm, "I'll talk to you tomorrow Peg, I seriously need some sleep."

"Okay night!" she said and hung up before I could say anything else.

I opened the door to the dorm and everything was silent. I made my way to my bed and flopped down, not bothering to get under the covers and fell asleep almost instantly.
