Hello again, everybody. Welcome back to my Crime Book. Today we are looking at a very famous Crime Story that happened 63 years ago in Espoo, Finland, in the early morning hours of June 5th 1960 and to this day, it remains one of, if not, the BIGGEST unsolved Mystery in Finnish History... Credit to the YouTuber, Horror Stories, Wikipedia, and FindAGrave for the information. Enjoy...

On this day, 63 years ago, in the early morning hours of June 5th 1960, four teenagers were on a camping trip by Lake Bodom in Espoo, Finland. However, what none of them or anyone else could've predicted was what would happen to them would become one of, if not the most HORRIFIC event in Finnish history...

On this day, 6 years ago, on June 4th 1960, four teenagers wanted to go on a camping trip to Lake Bodom in Espoo, Finland. The teenagers were 18 year old Seppo Antero Boisman, his girlfriend, 15 year old Anja Tuulikki Mäki, his best friend, 18 year old Nils Wilhelm Gustafsson, and his girlfriend, 15 year old Maila Irmeli Björklund.

The quadrio set up their tent and spent the rest of the evening relaxing with each other by the beautiful lake. They then went to sleep in their tents, looking forward to the next day of their trip. However, what would end up happening to them that night would be an event so HORRIFIC that would not only horrify the entire country, but the entire world...

On this day, 63 years ago, in the early morning hours on the morning of June 5th 1960, an unknown person cut the ropes securing their tent and began to STAB and BLUDGEON the teens through the tents canvas. It was so quick and terrifying that none of them ever had a chance. They couldn't do anything to help themselves, and there was nothing anyone else could do to help them...

A few hours later at 11:00 AM, a carpenter named Esko Oiva Johansson was walking by the lake when he noticed a collapsed tent by the lake and walked over to see what happened to it and what he saw, would be so terrifying that it would send the entire city of Espoo into a giant state of panic.

When Johansson looked inside the tent to see what happened, he was horrified as soon as he saw the bludgeoned bodies inside the tent. He immediately alerted the police, who arrived an hour later at 12:00 PM.

When the police arrived, they were just as horrified at the gruesome sight as Johansson was. Three of the teenagers were dead and Nils Gustafsson, the only one who was still alive, was lying semi-conscious on top of the tent. He sustained a fatal blow to the back of his head, a smashed jaw, and a deep knife wound in his forehead. He was quickly rushed to hospital where he miraculously made a full recovery, but was absolutely traumatized by what he went through that fateful morning...

Police immediately began investigating the horrific scene, and they found that not only was the tent completely torn apart and the bodies were all bludgeoned severely, but several of the victims' possessions were stolen, including the victim's keys to their motorcycles which they left at their houses. Their clothes and shoes were also stolen and found half a mile away. Police searched all around the lake for the missing motorcycle keys, but the keys were never found. The investigation also discovered that the killer used two weapons to kill the four campers, which were a knife and an unidentified blunt object which was most likely a giant rock.

Nils Gustafsson's girlfriend, Maila Bjorklund sustained the most fatal injuries out of the quadrio. Even though she wasn't sexually assaulted, she was found undressed from the waist down and was stabbed multiple times. She was found lying on top of the tent with her boyfriend, while the other two bodies, Seppo Boisman and Anja Mäki were found lying inside the tent and were killed with less brutality.

When the police immediately started investigating the area and looking for suspects as to who could have committed the gruesome acts, a group of young bird watchers told them that at 6:00 AM that morning, 5 hours before the bodies were discovered, they were watching for birds a short distance from the campsite, when they noticed the collapsed tent and a blond man walking away from the site. When Nils Gustafsson was recovering in the hospital and being questioned by police and investigators, he couldn't remember anything that happened on that horrific night, so he was put in Hypnotherapy to read subconscious memories he had that night. During the first two tries in an attempt to read his subconscious memories, the investigators found nothing about what happened that night, but on the third try, Gustafsson claimed he saw the killer and said it was clothed in black with bright red eyes, so the police drew sketches of what Gustafsson told them and released them to the public, and several people claimed a man who looked just like what Gustafsson described showed up to the funerals of the victims, but nobody knew who this man was, and the killer was never caught.

There were several suspects as to who could've killed the quadrio, but only two of them seemed to be the most likely ones.

The first main suspect was a 40 year old man named Karl Valdemar Gyllstrom. Gyllstrom lived and worked by the lake and often walked around it at night. He was known for having a hot temper and had a big hatred for young people, and would supposedly throw rocks at children whenever they passed his house. Gyllstrom confessed to the police multiple times that he was responsible for the murders before he commited suicide by drowning himself in the lake on August 2nd 1969.

Despite the multiple confessions and his behavior that made it possible for him to commit the murders, the police didn't believe Gyllstrom because they didn't have any physical evidence that would've linked him to the murders, and they also questioned his wife who told them he was sleeping with her on the night of the murders. However, this statement was proven false by her before she died, telling the police that her husband wasn't with her that night, and he threatened to kill her if she didn't lie to the police. These may very well be proof that Valdemar Gyllstrom psychotically murdered those four helpless teenagers that night because of his uncontrollable hatred for young people...

The other main suspect was a 36 year old man named Hans Assmann. Assmann was a German immigrant who worked as a KGB spy in the military before moving to Finland in the 1950's. Before he became a KGB spy, he served The SS Troops and worked as a guard at Auschwitz during World War II. He was fired from the job and was sent to Russia after he fell in love with a Jewish girl. Some people believe he could've been responsible for The Lake Bodom Murders because the day after the murders on the morning of June 6th 1960, Assmann wandered into a hospital with blood stains on his clothes, black fingernails, and appeared very disheveled. He acted very nervous and aggressive and even pretended to be unconscious. The hospital was super confused by his appearance and behavior, but what made him a possible suspect for the murders was the blood on his clothes matched the description of the murderer, and he cut his long hair after witnesses described the killer having long blond hair and he also lived only three miles away from the lake. Despite all of these possibilities however, police and investigators did not investigate him, nor did they take his blood covered clothing as evidence because his girlfriend gave police an alibi saying he was away during the time of the murders. Later in his life, Assman moved to Sweden where he confessed several times that he was responsible for the murders, but still, nobody believed him. He died 38 years later in 1998.

Even though Gyllstrom and Assmann seemed like decent suspects, the police didn't do much investigating on them because there wasn't enough evidence to link them to the murders. However, since Gyllstrom and Assmann were the only decent suspects and the police had very little evidence to go on and there wasn't anything anyone could do anymore. The Lake Bodom murders became a cold case, and with no more investigation to go on, everyone just had to give up and move on with their lives.

In March 2004, almost 44 years after the horrific murders, the only survivor, 61 year old Nils Gustafsson was arrested on suspicion that he was actually the killer who murdered his friends that night. In 2005, The National Finnish Bureau Of Investigation declared the 43 year old cold case was finally solved based on some new analyses of the bloodstains from the victims. The analyses claimed that at the time of the murders, Gustafsson was extremely jealous and angry over his feelings for his new girlfriend, Maila Bjorklund, which would explain why she suffered the most injuries out of the four campers and why Gustafsson's injuries were the least brutal.

Gustafsson's trial started on August 4th 2005 and the prosecution demanded life imprisonment for him after re-examination and DNA testing of the old evidence using modern techniques raised their suspicion for him being the killer. Despite the new and promising evidence however, Gustafsson's defense attorney argued that there was no way he could've been responsible because the murders had to have been committed by one or more outsider adults and the 18 year old wouldn't have been capable of killing the three teens, giving the extent of his injuries, as well as the fact it wouldn't make sense that he would injure himself and not run from the sight after killing the other campers. On October 7th 2005, Nils Gustafsson was proven to be not guilty of the murders, was acquitted of all the charges, and was paid $44,000 as an apology for his imprisonment and believing the false accusations made against him, and any mental struggles he had from it, as well as condolences for him and his poor friends.

Nils Gustafsson is 81 years old and is currently still alive today after he miraculously survived the horrific murders on his camping trip. Unfortunately, ever since that fateful night, he's always had to live with the fact that he was almost murdered that night, and his three other friends were murdered, and he would have to live with this horrible truth for the rest of his life...

To this day, it is still not 100% known as to who killed those three teenagers on that horrific summer night. Many people agree that it was probably either Valdemar Gyllstrome, Hans Assmann, or both of them teamed up together to kill the campers. I personally believe that both of them worked together to commit the gruesome act, as there is a good amount of evidence linking both of them to the murders. The Lake Bodom Murders is a crime case many people agree should be closed, but refuses to close yet because 63 years later, no one knows 100% who was responsible for those terrifying killings...

To this day, 63 years later, The Lake Bodom Murders remain as one of, if not, the most HORRIFIC murder story in Finnish History...

Who do YOU think was responsible for the deaths of Seppo Boisman, Anja Maki, and Maila Bjorklund on that nightmare of a night, 63 years ago?

The end...
