"What was that?" Jubilee said as a flash of silver sped away towards the house. River perked up.

"That's...Peter! Hey! What's he doing here?" she said.

"Who?" Scott asked as he drove. The five were driving back from the mall. It had been a successful trip: Kurt got a jacket, they had seen Star Wars, ate some snacks, and overall had a great time. Scott couldn't remember a time when he actually had more than one person willing to go to the mall with him. He was very glad, as River had also gone. Maybe holding her hand during the movie had been an impulsive act, but she hadn't said anything or acted like it was weird He smiled at the thought.

""Peter Maximoff. He's also called Quicksilver," replied River.

"That's him?" Jean said. The students had learned about the speedy mutant as he was an essential part of DC. She looked where the flash had been. "Wow. He is really fast." River noded.

"That's his gift?" Kurt asked. "To be fast?"

"Yep. They found him when they were getting Erik. I met him for a little bit when we went to DC for Erik. I stayed with Hank when we were in the Pentagon. Then he took me home when Charles, Erik, Hank, and that Logan guy went to find Dr. Trask. I was a little kid though...maybe he doesn't recognize me anymore. Hm." River got lost in her memories.

"Well, I wonder what he's doing here..." Jubilee slowed as they rolled up on the gravel driveway to the mansion. Or what used to be the mansion.

"What happened..." River gasped. Rubble was everywhere. The whole house had crumbled and looked like it had exploded. Now, only bits and pieces remained. All the teachers and students stood outside, stunned. Hank and a blue lady stood; the children looked at her with great interest: she was a hero to all of them. Scott recognized her as Mystique. The five saw everyone avert their attention to their yellow car as they parked. River was correct: there were two newcomers and one of them was the speedster the students had heard about from DC. The other was...

"Agent MacTaggert?" River muttered to herself as the five ran over. Jubilee went to go comfort the younger kids who were crying. "Hank!" River called. "Wha-where-how?" Scott saw her speechless. He understood: it had been her home for forever and now it was gone! He noticed something.

"Alex! Alex! Where's my brother?" yelled Scott frantically. He scanned the crowd. River joined him to search for his brother. His stomach went into his mouth when didn't see the blonde. He started to hyperventilate, and River's breath hitched up into her throat.

"Hank...where's Alex?" River asked, voice quivering. Scott looked up. Hank bent his head to hide the water that had appeared in his eyes.

"Alex was...Alex was closest to the blast," he said softly. "He's...gone."

"No...Alex..." Tears sprung up in River's eyes. Scott refused to believe it.

"No...no no no!" He ran off into the rubble of the house.

"Scott!" She ran after him. Jean and Kurt jogged after them, feeling heavy. Jubilee saw them run off with a pain in her chest. Hank watched them go with a sigh and wiped his eye as discreetly as possible.

Scott reached the ruins and knelt down with a sob, not able to run anymore. River caught up with him and fell down too. He took off his glasses to let his tears fall. She sat next to him, letting him cry while silently crying herself. Alex had been one of her closest friends at the mansion, and she was practically his other younger sibling. Jean covered her mouth in horror at the broken house, and Kurt didn't know what to say.

"I'm so sorry, Scott, I'm so so sorry," River said softly, her voice breaking a little. Scott put his glasses back on with a sniff. She didn't know what else to say. He stood up and took a breath. "You ok-" He cut her off with a hug. She returned it, tears in both of their eyes again.

"Y-yeah. I'm...ok." He gave a small smile.

"Lovebirds, much?" Jean said. River rolled her eyes and blushed a bit. She was about to say something when the sounds of an aircraft came in. They all looked up as a large helicopter came through the trees. The children looked at it with curiosity, and the adults in slight confusion. The helicopter did not have any decals or emblems to show who they were.

As it landed, it broadcasted a sort of reassuring message, "Please remain calm. Medical assistance is on the way. Please remain calm. Medical assistance is on the way." River shaded her eyes against the sun.

"Who are they?" she wondered aloud.

"The government?" Scott suggested.

"I don't know..." Jean said, trying to read the pilots' minds. Some men got out with padded armor and bulky looking guns. "They're too far for me to read." River went a bit closer to look at the men.

"The government shouldn't know about this place. Raven mentioned one guy though...I met him in DC awhile back. He was interested in mutants," River said. Scott could tell she was a bit scared of the soldiers. He moved closer to her to comfort her. The leader of the soldiers came last and had a pair of sunglasses on. He wore the same armor but had a black baseball cap on instead of a helmet. He wore a smug grin. Scott wondered why. The four teens saw the brown-haired lady, Agent MacTaggert, wave at the men.

"Hey! I'm Agent Moira MacTaggert, CIA! Thank god you're here!" The men didn't say anything. The leader took off his sunglasses. Scott saw Jean try to get into his head again, but failing. Something was wrong.

"Wait!" Mystique yelled. Before the four could do anything, the man yelled something.

"Fire!" At the signal, the soldiers fired their guns. There was a loud screech and flashes of light over the mutants in the front yard. All the children and teachers fell down unconscious River gasped.

"Oh my god," Jean mumbled. The soldiers pulled out real guns and started moving around the bodies.

"I want him!" their leader yelled, pointing. He looked around some more. "Her! Him." He walked around. "And her! Leave the kids." The soldiers put Hank, Mystique, Peter, and Agent Moira onto some stretchers and pulled them back onto the plane.

"Hey assho-" River was cut off by Scott pulling her back down and putting his hand over her mouth.

"Shut up! They might shoot us!" he whispered. She looked at the stretchers in agony. He pulled her down more as a soldier walked over.

"X-Ray 7! I'm doing a final sweep on the ground!" he called. Kurt, Scott, Jean, and River huddled into a concrete corner as he walked closer. Jean put her finger on her temple, a signature sign she was in his head. He walked to where they were, an River ducked her head into Scott's shirt. Scott felt his heart beat faster. There was a pause, and then the soldier turned away. "All clear!" He jogged back to the helicopter. River looked back out and let out a breath.

"Thanks, Jean," she said. The redhead nodded.

"Kurt, can you get us in that thing?" Scott asked. Kurt looked up.

"You want to get in there? What if the soldiers see us?" he said.

"They won't, trust me," replied Jean.

"Ok. Grab on." They all held onto his arms and bamf.

They appeared inside the back of a cage right as a soldier closed the door. The four kidnapped adults lay on the floor, unconscious still. Raven was tied down.

"This was a mistake," River murmured after scanning and finding no exits.

"Get us out, Kurt!" Scott said, trying to find some way to escape. They all grabbed onto Kurt's arms, but nothing happened.

"I-I-I can't!" Kurt said, afraid. "There's some sort of electrical field around this!" He started to hyperventilate."It's Berlin all over again!"

"Jean, get into the pilot's head and don't let them take off!" said Scott. He tried to look calm but was squeezing River's hand tightly. River was doing the same. Jean tried.

"I can't, I can't reach the pilots! I can't reach anyone!" she said, panicking.

"Shit," River said softly.

They all fell silent as they felt the helicopter take off.

"Jubilee...and the kids..." whispered River. Jean looked at her, the realization of the mutant children and their best friend dawning on her. "What's going to happen to them?"

"I don't know," Jean said. There was another silence. It lasted for a long time.

Jean sat on one side facing Kurt. She tried not to think about the unconscious mutants in front of her. She fidgeted with her shirt. Kurt's blue head was bent as he prayed. Scott and River sat in the back together, holding hands. Scott hadn't meant to hold her hand, but he just needed to know that someone was there physically with him. He was thinking about his family, and he could tell that River was doing the same as she looked from time to time at Hank and Raven. Scott's heart sank when he thought about Alex. It hurt too much to think about him. He focused on River instead, trying to block out the thoughts of his brother. She had her head on his shoulder, her soft hair falling onto his jacket. The jacket that he got from Alex. Stop thinking about him, Scott, stop it! he scolded himself. Scott began to cry softly.

"It should've been me," he said. They all looked up. Jean and River exchanged glances, then River put her other hand on his shoulder, gently rubbing it trying to comfort him. Kurt looked up but didn't stop praying. "It should've been me. He was the one who was going to do something with his life. He was always the one. I was the failure of the family." Scott hung his head, and tears rolled from under his red lenses.

"Hey, don't say that, Summers," River said. A pang of pain hit her as she said the nickname she used to call Alex. She fought it. "You know, he thought differently. He felt that you would be the one to do something with your life, something amazing. Make a difference. Maybe even a change to the world."

"How do you know what he felt?" Scott said, his voice breaking at the last word.

"Told me last night," she replied softly. He continued to tear up, but stopped crying. River squeezed his hand tighter, trying to make him smile. "Do you think she's ok?" River asked after a few more minutes of silence. "Jubi, I mean. I left her all alone." It was Scott's turn to comfort her.

"I'm sure she's fine. I mean, she's Jubilee," he said. She smiled slightly. Jean smiled a bit too.

"She's terrible with kids though," River added with a laugh. It was a bright sound.

"Well...that's a problem," Jean said. They all laughed a little. Kurt even stopped praying to smile.

"What're we going to do when this thing lands?" Scott asked. They all thought.

"Escape. And rescue them," River said firmly. She nodded towards the adults.

"We...might get injured or...die even..." Jean said, speaking everyone's thoughts. There was a pause.

"We have to try," Scott said. She and River nodded in agreement. Kurt began to pray again.

"Dear Father, hold me in the light of God. Protect me from danger. Save me by your command. Listen to my prayer. And keep me safe."

After an unknown amount of time, the aircraft went dark; no more light came through the windows behind the cage. The four teenagers perked up.

"We're landing," said Jean. There were sounds of giant doors opening and closing. "What do we do now?"

"Well, we have to make sure they don't see us if this rescue mission'll work," said Scott. Jean nodded to say she was ready.

"I should go with them," River spoke up. They turned to look at her.

"What?" Jean said. River motioned to the four mutants on the floor.

"I'll pretend I'm knocked out like them. I've met Stryker before. He knows me sorta, and whatever the reason, he should take me. If not, Jean," she looked at the other girl, "make them believe."

"Riv! You can't!" Scott said. They felt the plane land with a bump. There were some shouts of soldiers exiting. He put his hand on her arm, ready to pull her back. "They'll catch you! Kill you maybe!"

"Scott, you have to let me do this," River looked at him pleadingly. "I've known Hank and Raven for most of my life, and I need to protect them, along with Peter and Agent Mactaggert, as best as I can." She gently pulled his hand off. "Make sure you rescue me, Summers." The shouts came closer. She grinned with as much effort as possible.

"I will," he said. "Don't die."

"I won't." Realizing that they may never see each other again, Scott hugged her tight, another impulsive act. She hugged back fiercely.

"Stay safe," he said as she laid down next to Hank. River nodded with a smile.

"Jean," Jean looked up as River said her name, "Keep the boys safe. Kurt, make sure you all can escape, with or without me." Kurt and Jean both nodded. "Jean, now." She fell onto the floor quickly as soldiers opened the cage. Jean put her finger on her temple, and the soldiers didn't even notice the three in the back.

"Hey, who's the girl? Did we take her too?" a soldier asked, looking at River. Her breathing was slow and steady, but Scott could only imagine how panicked she was. He held in a breath. Take her, come on. The other man looked over.

"Meh. Probably. Just take her along; the boss always needs new freaks." They laughed harshly. Scott let out the breath, and they watched soldiers take the mutants away. Before the door shut, the three quietly sneaked out, Jean making sure they were invisible.

Once out, they walked through the green lit hallways. Lucky for them, there were barely any men around.

"Where are we?" Kurt said. Jean looked around, but there were no soldiers to read.

"I don't know," she admitted.

"Somewhere in New York?" Scott suggested. "We couldn't gone that far."

"Maybe," she replied.

The trio sneaked around some more before reaching hallways with even more doors and soldiers. They hid behind some walls as men with guns walked past. A door opened next to them, and Jean made them invisible as soldiers walked by. Scott looked into the open door and saw aircraft. The door closed and locked.

"That's our way out. Kurt, can you get into there?" he whispered. Kurt shook his head.

"It has an electrical field like the helicopter," he replied.

"There has to be a way to cut the power," Jean said. Scott nodded. "We gotta find a generator."

"Ok, that'll be our goal," said Scott. Before they could walk around more, there was a voice.

"Hear me, inhabitants of this world." They all looked up in confusion.

"The hell..." Scott muttered.

"This is a message," came the voice again. It sounded familiar...

"I think it's the professor," Jean murmured. The message continued.

"A message to every man, woman and mutant. You have lost your way. But I have returned. The day of reckoning, it is here. All your buildings...all your buildings and temples...will fall. The dawn of a new era will emerge. For there is nothing you can do. Those with the greatest power..." There was a slight pause. "Protect those without. That's my message to the world." It ended as abruptly as it had started. Kurt and Scott were astounded. Jean looked utterly shocked.

"Holy crap," Scott mumbled. Jean looked up at the other two.

"He just spoke to me," she said softly. Scott raised an eyebrow.

"I think he spoke to everyone," he said. She shook her head.

"No no, he just sent me a secret message - something he knew only I could hear. I know where he is."

"Ok good, but first, we need to find a gene-" Before Scott could finish, two soldiers came into sight. They saw the teens and raised their guns.

"Hey! Intruders in Quad 6!" one yelled into a walkie-talkie.

"Run!" Scott yelled. The three sprinted to another hallway, bullets being shot behind them. They ran for a couple minutes through curves and long walkways. The soldiers kept yelling but got farther and farther behind. The shots stopped and eventually, the soldiers stopped too. The teens ran into yet another hallway and slowed down. They panted and took in big gulps of air.

"Glad...they're...gone," Kurt said between breaths. Scott and Jean nodded enthusiastically. Scott turned around to see another heavily secured door. There was a small bullet proof window. He looked through and saw blinking lights: a generator. Bingo, he thought. River, we're coming.

"Here's a generator," he told the other two. "It's worth a shot."

"Kurt," Jean nodded at the blue boy. They grabbed onto his arms, and they bamfed into the room.

The room was dimly lit, lights flickering slightly. The generator was in the back of the room. It was grey and had tiny multi-colored lights and buttons all over it. The trio walked towards it when they noticed a huge black box on the side. It had a large slid-in lock on it. Scott looked to his left and saw bloody, used medical equipment. What the... The black box rumbled, there was a growl from inside, and they all jumped back.

"There's some sort of animal in there," he said. Kurt looked curious but scared. Jean got closer to it with an interested look - she was reading someone's mind. She shook her head.

"That's no animal," she said. "It's a man."

"Who is it?" asked Kurt. She tilted her head slightly.

"That part of him has been taken away," she replied.

"What do you mean?" Scott said.

"They...they turned him into some kind of...weapon," responded Jean. She kept walking closer, but they heard a THUD! Suddenly there were noises, thumps, outside the door. The three ran behind the box to hide. The two soldiers from earlier busted the door open and ran in with guns.

"Checking the generator room, sir," one said. The second walked around carefully as if there was a poisonous snake in the room. The three huddled together, completely silent. Jean perked up. Scott interpreted it as she had an idea.

She slowly lifted her hand, and the bar that held the box's doors shut slowly lifted too. When it was completely up, the door creaked open.

"What the hell are you doing?!" Scott whispered frantically.

"Trying to get some help," she whispered back. The soldiers looked behind themselves as they heard the door open more. A man with brown hair and a furious expression stepped out of the door, tons of wires and machinery attached to him. He growled menacingly, and the soldiers froze in fear.

The next thing the three heard was slicing and screams.
