AUTHOR'S NOTE:  This is the most read of my poems, simply because it is the first in the book.  The poem I am most proud of, however, is   'Mountain Trekking Thru' The Himalay' so if you like this first poem, Coffee and A Cake,  please give 'Mountain Trekking' a try and I don't think you will be disappointed.  (It's the 15th poem in this book).

THANK YOU.

Pat

                                            COFFEE AND A CAKE

I could roam the whole world over, until my bones begin to ache,

But nowt I'd find more wonderful than coffee and a cake.

I'm looking at my watch now, I'm running rather late.

There wasn't time this morning for coffee and a cake.

I pay the grumpy driver my extortionate bus fare,

(a fiver spent in Bristol will not get you anywhere.)

The bus is very crowded there is not a single seat.

Every window tightly shut and I cannot bear the heat.

That stupid man in front of me is standing on my foot.

If I was more aggressive, I would give a dirty look.

It's almost time to disembark and I'm feeling rather dry.

There wasn't time for a coffee this morning. Shall I tell you why?

(All that scrabbling about at 7.30 am taking my HRT, making sure I've got my keys, a tea-shirt in case the office is too hot, a jumper in case the heating has packed up, a book to read on the bus; reading glasses, lunch box, umbrella, aspirins, of course there wasn't time for a coffee or any breakfast.)

Some they like their lager and some they love their wine,

But as long as I have coffee and cake, of course, then I'm really fine.

I'm running to the office now, oh, don't forget the milk.

Added to the coffee it tastes just like molten silk.

                                                         (And don't forget the doughnut!)

Cake is full of calories, it doesn't keep one sleek,

but I'll worry about that some other day, perhaps one day next week.

It puts a few more inches on my hips, but does anybody care?

Do I look so very awful with extra padding here and there?

I could roam the whole world over and my poor old feet would ache

But never, ever, ever, in the whole wide world could be there ever be anything more wonderful,

delightful, delicious or delectable than... coffee and a cake!
