Chapter 21

The Island

-Preston-

Small droplets of water splashed into my face as we sped through the waters on our rented motor boat. Jase was steering the motor and Cress sat behind with him. I sat in front with Bree. Ryker believed the orb was on an island off the coast of Sinnoh.

Bree and I had won our battles today and were free to do whatever. My only concern about the tournament is this kid named Corvin from Unova. His Meinshao is incredible and he has this fierceness about him. He's been battling since birth and has won hundreds of tournaments over the years.

A small speck in the distance started to grow bigger as we raced towards it. The island. We sat in silence the entire time. Jase killed the motor when we got to the shore. He tied a piece of rope attached to the boat to a near by tree stump.

"So what are we looking for here? Are just going to whip out orb detectors and comb the beach?" Bree asked.

"Ryker said we should be looking for some kind of structure." Cress answered.

We split up and looked around close to the beach. Nothing.

"I guess we will have to go into the thick forest to look." I pointed to the tree line the started about twenty feet away from the shore.

We started into the forest. We walked downhill into the heart of the trees. Pine needles and sticks crunched beneath our feet. We looked around for maybe twenty minutes with no trace of an orb. I huffed and sat on large rock in the clearing we met up at.

"This is bull," Cress said angrily, "we can't find anything!"

Almost on cue, Bree called out. "Hey! I found something!"

Cress held his head down. "I stand corrected." He sprinted up a hill Bree was on. We climbed up the steep incline. It was slightly muddy and I almost slipped once. I peered over the hill. Hidden by trees was an old clay building. It was yellowed from age and looked to be a temple, maybe.

"What are we waiting for?" Cress said after a long silence, "lets go!" He slid down the hill and was closely followed by Jase. I nodded at Bree and started down the hill. We approached the entrance, a long dark corridor awaited us. Luckily, Jase brought a flash light.

The darkness was pierced by the circle of light being emitted by the flashlight. The walls seemed to be etched with old writings and pictures.

We walked down the corridor with the small light from the flashlight bouncing from wall to wall. I noticed holes in the ceiling giving off light. We stopped at a dead end. The stone tablet that stopped us was covered with strange letters. Except they weren't letters, they were Unown!

The entire alphabet of strange Pokemon lay before us on a wall. Also in the Unown writing I could make out a sentence above the wall.

Spell the origin and enter.

"The sentence above the wall says to spell the origin and enter," I told the others.

"You do realize there are many origins in the region lore," Jase said. "It could be referring to many of them and this temple could have nothing to do with the orbs and was just used to seal it up."

"So what do we put?" asked Bree.

Jase pressed his fingers on the Unown to spell Arceus. A loud sound rang through the hall. It sounded like grinding gears. A small hole in the wall shot out what looked like to be a dart. Cress tackled him to the ground and the dart whizzed by and stabbed into the wall.

"Thanks." Jase said, breathing hardly.

We sat around thinking. The last thing we need was an arrow in the chest. Then it hit me, it has to be Mew. I saw a picture of him by the entrance and six circles surrounding him. The orbs. I ran to the stone tablet and pressed the Unown that looked like an M, an E, and a W. The tablet sunk into the wall with a loud screech. It revealed a large room the size of our gymnasium.

Pillars were scattered on the floor that once held up the ceiling. A shining sea blue orb was perched on a podium in the back of the room. We entered the room and made our way to the orb. Suddenly, we were pushed back onto the floor. I hit my head pretty hard.

I slowly got up with the others. A black mist hovered above us. It started to take the shape of something. It grew long slender legs and arms. It had a large and rugged looking chest with long white hair and light blue eyes.

Darkrai! The dark corrupted soul Ryker told us about. I stared in disbelief at the ghost before us. His arm reached up behind his head. He hurled a purple shadow ball at us. We scattered across the room for cover. I pulled Bree behind a fallen column. I peeked over the column and saw the orb had fallen from its pedestal.

The shock from Darkrai's attack must have knocked it off. Shadow balls were being thrown around the room. Destroying it bit by bit. Darkrai had his back turned to us.

"We have to go get it," Bree made a start towards it. I stopped her. I don't know why but I kissed her. I didn't know if we were getting out of this alive. I didn't think about it I just did it. I released and saw the look of horror on my friends faces.

"What the hell is this?" Cress yelled.

"Now isn't time for this," Jase added.

"How long has this been going on?"

"Keep it professional!"

"Why? Just why?"

My face and ears felt hot. Bree looked to be in a similar situation.

"Let's get out of here so you two can make out on they way back on the boat." Cress said, harshly.

I wanted to punch that kid right in the face. Darkrai ceased his firing. We made a break for the hallway. He pursued us. He was floating closer and closer. I was in the back of the group. He reached out a slender arm. If he moved any further he would be able to pull me away. Except he didn't pull me away. Cress did.

He grabbed my shirt and threw me ahead of him. Cress was know the legendary's target. He reached an arm back and threw a Shadow Ball that struck Cress in the back. He crumbled to the ground. He was unconscious. Darkrai grabbed him by the throat and slammed him against the wall. We were all watching.

A black smoke came out of Darkrai's red ring around his neck and into Cress' mouth. I threw out Blaziken's Pokeball and had him use Blaze Kick. Darkrai dodged the attack. He didn't have a visible mouth but it seemed like he was smiling. He disappeared as quickly as his appearance.
