But one day, when Hugo was 19, the Magic Mirror gave a different answer. Gaston asked the Magic Mirror his usual everyday question.

"Magic Mirror on the wall, who is the most handsome one of all?"

Gaston was expecting his usual response, but the Magic Mirror responded, "You are very charming, Your Majesty. That's true—but there's one person much more handsome than you. He has shiny dark brown hair, you should know—and he goes by the name 'Prince Hugo'!"

Gaston was horrified—Hugo was much more handsome than he was. "But that's impossible! I'm the most handsome one of all!" he protested.

"You are the second most handsome now, and your stepson is more stunning than thou," the Magic Mirror reminded him.

Gaston became increasingly jealous, and his eyes turned green with envy. This is exactly what he was afraid of—his own stepson had surpassed his beauty.

Hugo was planting flowers in the garden, and he was pretty dirty from digging in the dirt. As the butterflies flew all around, Hugo sang his mother's wonderful song to them.

Unbeknownst to the handsome prince, his jealous stepfather watched from the window. "Even his singing voice is beautiful," he muttered.

Gaston wanted to win his title back—and the only way to win his title back was if Hugo was dead. Gaston knew how to make this happen.

After Hugo planted all the flowers, Gaston showed up and said, "Hugo, my boy, you've been working very hard lately. Maybe you should take the day off. Why don't you go out for a hike with the Huntswoman?"

Hugo was surprised by his stepfather's sudden kindness, but he knew that he had been working very hard lately, so he said, "Okay, thank you, Stepfather."

"Well, you'd better get cleaned up before you get going," Gaston smiled.

While Hugo was getting cleaned up, Gaston called for the huntswoman. The wicked king ordered the huntswoman to take Hugo to the woods and kill him, so the king himself can be the most handsome one of all.
