the sun and her stars

Nitrogen in our DNA, calcium in our bones,

Iron running down our blood vessels -

We are all a part of a huge constellation,

Made up of star stuff, burning and writhing,

Seething with life, yet dying with every moment.

Yet I refuse to be a part of the fool's crowd,

Twinkling among billions of ordinary stars.

I refuse to clasp my lustre, my dreams, my fire

In the darkness of the night sky.

I want to be the sun whose birth is like

A miracle painted over the sky's expanse,

A star around which the planets would like to revolve.

I want to bathe the people and push them to wake up,

To breathe a little more, to dream a little big.

I want to paint the world in yellows, crimsons and gold

And create a living, breathing masterpiece.

I want to burn, shine till my body withers to dust.

So what if people do not look at me like they gaze at stars?

For dreamers, lovers and artists, tend not to people

But to the entirety of humanity, the world and the words.

I refuse to be another star in the night sky.

I want the wholeness, the completeness of my life

Outshine the colossal supernova that my end might be.

I do not just want to be remembered

When I collapse, I don't wish to be a tragedy.

I wish to be a story, a living, breathing one.

Author's Note:

This poem is a reminder to myself, to be my honest, authentic self to myself and the people around me, to be infinite, brave and kind. This is a reminder to you to be your own sun so that you drive away all the shadows and bathe in sunshine.
