Chapter 3

Scarlett traces her way back through the woods, towards there den. She saw her mother lay asleep, while Sap was awake, watching her enter.

   Sap signaled for her to come over, and Scarlett silently walked over. Sap whispered to her, "What were you doing out there?"

   Scarlett stuttered, "your stories were right! I saw her.. I saw StarLight. She leads me to the escape hole. And I wanted to make sure it was true. It really was! I saw it."

   Sap paused for a moment. "Yes. But.. do you want to leave?"

   Scarlett thought about her answer. "Yes... Yes, I do."

   Sap gave a slight smile, "Then tomorrow, I'll lead you to start your journey."

   Scarlett wagged her tail, then walked over to her mother. She curled up beside her mother and licked her pelt. She whispered, "I'll miss you, mom."

   Scarlett woke up, early that morning. The sun still hadn't started to rise, and everyone was still sound asleep, including her mother. She looked up to see Sap licking her.

   "Oh good, you're awake." Sap whispered. "Now let's go." Sap then walked over to the den entrance, waiting for her.

   Scarlett looked back at her mother. She licked her pelt once again, and added slightly, "I'm sorry."

   Sap mumbled, "are you coming?"

   Scarlett nodded, and gave her mother's pelt one last lick, and got up.

   Scarlett and Sap walked through the woods silently. They soon approached the escape route. Scarlett saw as the sun started to rise.

   Sap quickly said, "about a two-day journey."

  Sap narrowed her eyes, "Scarlett, remember that you truly are special, and no other fox will be the type of chief you will be." Sap then turned and walked back through the forest, without looking back.

   Scarlett couldn't believe it. There is no way Scarlett could be like one of the magnificent foxes in Sap's stories, right?

   Scarlett looked back towards the forest, the one she had lived in for her who life. "Bye." She whispered. She crouched down and crawled under the wooden walls. Some wood scratched her, but then she squished through. She looked back after she came out. She had escaped!

   She wandered the path, it was filled with TallLeg scents, and other scents flew around, scents she had never smelt before. She walked through the path, seeing different creatures, locked behind the same glass wall. But then, she was startled to see a group of TallLegs walking, looking at the animals. Behind them, were countless of them. They then screamed and pointed at her. Her eyes widened. She hadn't escaped yet!

   She ran back where she came from, running as fast as her legs could take her. She then saw more TallLegs, this time chasing her. She ran, but then realized it was a stone wall. There was no escape. The TallLegs came over, with strange gadgets in their hands. They started barking words she could not understand.

   She saw as their legs were spread. She took this chance and ran under them. They shot their gadgets but they missed! She ran back towards the crowds, many of the TallLegs screamed, and ran out of her way. In the end, she could see a small clear wall. Beside it, all the TallLegs were coming in. She held her breath and hoped this time the clear wall would move. She held her breathe and jumped.

   She ran into it, and it shattered into pieces. She paused for a moment, to look at what she caused. But then she saw the TallLegs again, and she ran. She now saw giant machines, that TallLegs were moving. She ran across all of them, some skidded, so they wouldn't run into her. She ran faster when she heard two run into each other. Oh no!

   As she kept running, her feet started to feel the comfort of soft grass. She was now running on grassy hills. In the far distance, she could make out a forest. She slowed down, gasping for air. The TallLegs were gone, except for the ones in machines, on the path.

   The sun was now in the middle of the sky. She had started her journey. There was no going back.
