"I thought I'd never come out of it." Nonso said, flipping through his certificates.

Derin sat opposite him on the bed. They had returned to Lagos and were cleaning out an old shelf he'd packed his credentials in. It was then Nonso started telling her about his toughest moment. When he had been wrongly accused in his finals.

"The professor was really serious about cancelling the exam. I was scared I'd carry over or probably be rusticated from school."

Derin's heart pounded. She needed to tell him. So far things had been going good, but she feared that the truth would hurt him. She slipped her hands in his.

"It's all in the past."

Nonso looked up at her, the pain visible in his eyes. "I kept wondering, what if, what if I'd repeated. What if? You know I did rewrite that exam, under those circumstances."

Derin creased her brows. "I don't understand."

Nonso sighed. "After i was caught, my script was signaled out. It was marked and my score was first class worth. But the man who caught me told me to rewrite so they'll know if it was my brain. They set up another question and with four people around me, I rewrote my last paper. Well, it was as excepted, I didn't write extensively."

Derin was furious. Those lectures were stupid. How could they think that he'd write as brilliantly as he had written in his first exam. With all the tension and all, he couldn't.

Nonso smiled. "I could have made a first class but a second class upper is a good result too."

Then he kissed Derin squarely on the lip. Derin nuzzled closer and deepened the kiss.

"We have work, babe." He groaned against her lips.

Derin sighed dramatically and drew back. "Yeah."

The next moment, Nonso had dressed up in his official white and black attire. Derin kissed him good bye as he walked out the apartment door.

I could have made a first class.

Guilt burdened her, if he hadn't been caught, he could have made a first class. She made up her mind, she'd tell him the truth tonight, when they were both back from work, home and relaxed.

_________

Work was over and Mitchell had dropped by to pick her. The excitement in her voice was hard to ignore. Derin stared at her quizzically. Mitchell looked lovely in her new hairstyle. A wavy hair extension that stopped below her neck. Derin sat comfortably in the car. Sometimes she regretted not accepting the Avalon her father had offered on her twentieth birthday. She never accepted huge gifts from him. She always justified it as his ways of wanting to atone for not being there.

"Babe, guess what?" Mitchell said as she swerved right.

Derin turned to her. "What?"

"There is a job vacancy. Jib oils are expanding their company to lagos. They need a public relation officer. Do you want to apply?"

Derin raised a brow. "Is that why you're excited?"

"No. Answer this one first."

"Sure, what's the pay?"

Mitchell smirked. "Two hundred k."

Derin turned to her. "Seriously?"

"I never lie."

Derin played cool. The job was a big catch. "Sure, I'll apply."

Mitchell smiled. "Good to know, now down to why I'm excited. I'm going to portharcout."

Derin furrowed her brows. "Why?"

"I'm having a fashion show!"

"Fashion show?"

"Yes, like to display my designs, my clothings."

"Why not in Lagos?"

Mitchell groaned. "You don't sound excited."

Derin looked at her dryly. "This is my excited face."

Mitchell looked away. Derin had deliberately given her the dry look, just to rile her up. She knew how excited Mitchell got about her works.

Derin broke into a soft smile. "Hey. I'm joking, of course I'm excited."

Mitchell said nothing.

Derin sighed. "Mitch na. No vex."

Mitchell let out a smile. "You sef no annoy me."

Derin laughed. "You speak pidgin."

Mitchell rolled her eyes. "I'm inviting you sha. In fact sef we are going together."

Derin grinned. "I'll be there to support you, no worry."

Mitchell smiled. "Thank you b. We'll crash port down!"

"So, who are the sponsors?" Derin asked, trying to make small talk.

"My daddy, Ebuka and Jib oils,"

"Ebuka?"

Mitchell shrugged nonchalantly. "He offered."

Derin smiled smugly. "Hmm."

The rest of the ride, they'd talked about the fashion show. Mitchell wanted to take Derin to her apartment so Derin could help her with preparations, but Derin insisted she'd be there on weekend. Mitchell agreed excitedly. She dropped Derin off at the hill estate and didn't zoom off until she saw that Derin had entered the apartment building.

_______

Nonso had just finished having a meeting with his client, he was the legal advisor for the Imaseun Oil company. The meeting had been exhausting. He'd been talking all day. He slung his suit jacket over his shoulder and made his way out of the elevator. He heard the distant harsh whisper of the receptionist. He made his way over to the reception.

On getting there, he sighted a man stretching out to touch the receptionist. "Chinelo please. I swear I'm serious about us."

"You just met me now, here. I don't even know you." Chinelo deadpanned.

"But I love you."

"Stop." The receptionist called harshly. "You can't say those things here, it's work hour. Mr man please leave."

Nonso made his way towards them, the clump of his shoes echoing through the hallway.

"What's the matter here?" He asked in a boss like manner.

The man turned. Nonso froze at the sight of whom he saw. He never thought he'd see the asshole again.

"If it isn't little barrister perfection." Micheal sneered maliciously.

Nonso gave nothing away. "Michael please hold up whatever you're doing. This is a work place."

Michael snorted. "Right."

Nonso watched as Michael turned back to Chinelo who seemed reluctant to talk to him. Nonso could sense discomfort.

"I'll call security if you don't listen." Nonso announced.

Michael turned slowly. "You and that main bitch of yours locked me up."

"Leave my building," Nonso snapped, haven lost patience.

Micheal smirked. "Still with her huh? I'm guessing she hasn't told you about her little adventure to ruin your life after you cheated on her. It wouldn't surprise me."

Nonso narrowed his eyes. "I'll punch you if you don't keep your mouth shut." He turned to Chinelo. "Call in security."

She obliged.

Michael raised his hand. "I'll go, I'll go. But ask your chic how much she paid jhonny boy to set up the expo right before you as the inspectors came around. Also ask her how sweet the sex was with Daniel a.k.a mad scientist whom she satisfied to get you out of that shit she created in the first -"

Nonso was seething. "Get the fuck out."

Michael shrugged. "Will do but don't forget to ask her."

Michael retrieved a paper from his pocket and threw it on the floor. "Or you can simply ask why she's wired a hundred thousand naira to Daniel Olukoya."

He retrieved another one from his pocket, but this paper was bigger. He flung it on the floor as well. "Unilag times...2011. Derin love graces the front page."

Michael grinned happily and made to walk. Nonso could hold his anger anymore, he sprung forward and punched Michael squarely on the Jaw. Security rushed in and took Michael out. Nonso was shaking with anger.

Even though he didn't want to do it, his subconscious pricked him. Looking at the papers on the floor, he was curious as to what was in them. He made to turn and just go home, but on a second thought, Michael's words rang in his ears, bending down, he picked up the unilag times and flipped it open.

The front page washed all his trust away. Maybe Michael had been right.

Aderinsola Adeyi, screwing old man Thomas, The great Law professor.

The nude picture before him made his heart sink. He clenched his fists. How true were Michael's words.

__________

She sat in the living room after preparing jollof rice and pacing fro and to. She hoped Nonso would be back soon. She was all gingered up to tell him the truth.

You can do this.

She said the same thing over and over again. After much convincing, she stood up and walked to a picture of Nonso on the wall. He had his head on something that looked like a ladies thigh and ring of smoke hovered above his pink lips. Although Nonso had told her it was photoshop, the smoke still looked real but she was certain her man was no smoker. The green background did good to bring out his lovely hazel eyes. She groaned.

1..2..3

"Nonso, I have something to tell you."

Her voice snapped away instantly as she drowned in his hazel eyes. Her mouth hung open like a gold fish. She huffed loudly then stepped back.

She couldn't do it. The mere thought of him looking at her in disdain was enough to cast her away. She decided she'd tell him when she'd be in PH.

Mitch might invite him.

It was a lot harder than she'd thought. She'd just tell him on voice note.

If you tell me say say make i put one leg for fia (fia fia)

She dashed to the dining table to pick up her phone. The iphone 7 Nonso had bought her vibrated. She'd discarded her old phone and launched the one Nonso had given her as soon as she got to Lagos.

The caller ID had daniel on it. She creased her brows. Why was he calling.

"Hello,"

"I can't believe you!" Daniel snapped. "Don't tell me you didn't tell lover boy."

Derin creased her brows. Kini gbogbo rubbish yi? What's all this nonsense.

"What are you saying?"

Daniel sighed. "I thought you'd have told Nonso about the events that had been happening."

Derin froze. Daniel went on. "I'm sorry Derin. I... I tried to stop Micheal, but he was high and apparently stronger than me. He headed off this morning with an aim to break you and Nonso off. He just came back now. Nonso knows-"

Just then, the front door burst open. A calm looking Nonso walked.

"Good evening, love of my life."
