Niall’s POV

I pulled the suitcase up onto my bed and unzipped it. Zayn did the same with his suitcase. Neither of us said a single word. Neither of us really felt like talking that much. We didn’t want to talk about what was happening today, and that was the only thing we could think about

I grabbed my clothes out from the little hotel dresser and carried them back to my bed, placing them inside the suitcase with a sigh. Today, the boys and I were flying back to England for recording. The girls were flying back home so they’d be ready for school, which started on Tuesday. I really wished this didn’t have to end. But, at least we had a great summer.

For three months, the boys and I almost felt like normal people. We were able to hang out with friends and do crazy things. Yeah, sure we had to work at times, but we still got time to do normal things too. It was actually pretty relaxing. And I could only thank these six girls for sending one fan letter.

Zayn and I packed our suitcases. He finished first, since I had a few souvenirs to put in as well.

“You almost ready?” Zayn asked, saying the first words between us since breakfast. He pulled his suitcase off his bed and to the ground.

“Almost,” I replied, as I placed the souvenirs on the top of the clothes. I quickly zipped the suitcase up and pulled it off the bed. “Okay, let’s go,” I said with only half the normal enthusiasm I normally had.

We were going to meet the girls down in the lobby (or really, we were going to meet them in the van once we were all out of the fans’ view), so Zayn and I went straight to the elevator, dragging our rolling suitcases behind us.

“Well, this has been fun,” Zayn mused as we walked.

I nodded in agreement. “I wish this summer didn’t have to end,” I said, sighing again.

“Me too, mate,” Zayn said as we wheeled our suitcases toward the elevator.

Harry, Liam and Louis were waiting near the elevator, their suitcases at their feet. The boys were waiting there for us, and couldn’t have been there long. The sounds of the fans’ screams were flowing into our ears from up here thanks to the open air space over the lobby that went all the way up to the top floor.

Liam noticed us first. “There you guys are,” he said, speaking just loud enough for us to hear over the screams.

“Sorry,” I apologized. “We were just finishing up packing.”

The boys nodded in understanding. Then, instead of pressing the down button, we all found ourselves walking towards the open air and the screams of our amazing fans, our suitcases rolling behind us. We poked our heads out over the edge and smiled. The screams immediately intensified. We waved to them, smiling.

I can’t even begin to explain how thankful we are for the fans. There’s no way we could even come close.

“I can’t believe how lucky we are,” Louis mused, smiling. “We were just normal lads who loved to sing, and now we’re touring the world, doing what we love to do.”

“I’m glad my parents convinced me to go,” Zayn said, chuckling a bit. We all laughed at that, continuing to wave to the fans.

We all smiled softly, continuing to wave to the fans. But, then I saw six faces I recognized near the doors. It was the girls. I could see all of them smiling at us.

Then, when Lizzie completely got our attention, she waved frantically, motioning for us to get down there. “Lizzie’s summoned us,” I said, laughing a bit. The rest of them joined in, smiling. “Come on, boys.”

We all smiled and pulled our suitcases over to the elevator, and Harry pressed the down button. When we left their view, we heard the screams lessen only slightly, but they still were screaming for us to come. The elevator doors slid open after a few moments, and we stepped inside. As soon as we were visible in the glass wall of the elevator, the screams intensified again.

Harry again pushed the button, this one for the lobby, and we rode down to the ground floor. When the doors opened on the ground floor, the screams intensified even more, if possible. Paul stood at the elevator doors, waiting for us.

“Hey, Paul,” Harry greeted.

“Hi, boys,” he said. “We just got the girls to the van,” he informed us.

“Okay, great,” Liam said, but the usual enthusiasm he had when it came to talking about the girls was gone.

We took hold of the handles on our suitcases and walked out of the elevator. Our bodyguards and some hotel staff had made us a path through the fans to the door, but that didn’t stop us from stopping to sign autographs and take pictures along the way. After all, it was only ten Pacific time, and our flight (which was before the girls’) was at six.

When we got out to the van, we sat down in our seats, smiling softly at the girls. Our suitcases had been put in the back, so we could be inside and protected.

“There you guys are,” Lucy said.

“Sorry, we had to stop to talk to the fans,” Louis said.

The girls nodded, understanding. As they did this, the driver drove us off towards the airport.

----------

You always will be my summer love,” the boys and I sang softly to the girls just as we reached the airport. The words of the song rang true for all of the boys and I, to be honest. We had had the best time this summer, and now it was horrible since we had to leave.

But then again, I never really had Lucy. I never got to even tell her how I felt even though it was kind of obvious. But, I was going to come back for her someday, I just knew it.

Simone smiled at us. “The best part of this summer was the free, private concerts,” she said, and we weren’t sure if she was joking or not. “I’m kidding,” she told us, and we all smiled, nodding.

The boys and I put our hats on and a pair of sunglasses to give us some kind of disguise. It wasn’t the best, but it would do for now.

We all got out of the van, the girls all going first, and got our bags. We went to check in to our flight, and got it done quickly, which surprised me, since we had so many of us to check in. Then, we went through security, which took longer.  Then, we went to find our gates. In the van on the way here, we had decided to wait at our gate together, since we left first, and then the girls would go to their gate once we had left to get on the plane.

We went to the gate and found some seats all together, since we were there early. “So…” Kelly said softly.

“This summer was amazing,” Liam said.

“Yeah, it really was. I had so much fun,” Ana said, smiling a tiny bit.

“Thanks for giving us the best summer ever, you guys,” Courtney said.

“Thank you for giving us an amazing summer,” Harry said. “We really liked hanging out with you all summer.”

I nodded in agreement. “It was great,” I said, kind of at a slight loss for words.

We spent a while talking in the gate area, enjoying the last bit of time we were able to talk face to face. It was really nice to be there.

Then, Lucy said, “I’m going to go get a snack. Want me to get you guys anything?” She stood up, picking up her tiny purse and slinging it over her shoulder again.

Choruses of “No thanks” and “I’m good” rang out.

“I’ll come with you,” I said, standing up to join her.

“Okay, thanks,” Lucy said, giving me a small smile. “Let’s go,” she said, and we went to go find something to eat.

We walked down the pathways in the airport, not really saying much for a bit. But, as we got to a snack bar and got in line, she turned to me. “I really did have a great time this summer,” she told me.

“I’m glad. I had a great time too,” I told her.

Lucy looked at me. “Listen, I’m sorry about what happened,” she said.

“What do you mean?”

“This summer, I wasn’t being as welcoming around you. The thing is, I…I like you, Niall. I just, I didn’t want to fall for you because I knew you were leaving, and I didn’t want you to forget about me.”

“Lucy, how could I ever forget you?” I asked, looking into her eyes.

“I just didn’t want to fall for you and then for you to leave. I’m sorry,” Lucy said, looking down.

“Lucy Cole, there is no way in the entire universe that I could forget you,” I told her, meaning it.

“Seriously?” she asked. “When you’re traveling the world, seeing all these faces of these other girls? You’re not going to forget the girl that’s sitting at home on a cul de sac in a Minnesota town when you’re with models and beautiful singers?”

“I’m not going to forget you,” I said. “I promise.”

Lucy’s lips curved into a small smile, and said, “Okay.”

I gave her a smile, and we reached the front. Lucy ordered her snack, and I pulled out my wallet. “You don’t have to pay,” she said, looking up at me once she saw my wallet.

“Hey, it’s the last time I can buy you something for a while,” I said.

“Okay, fine,” Lucy said, but I knew she really didn’t want me to pay. I paid for her snack and she took it, and then we went back to the gate. As we walked, I took a risk. I took her hand, biting my lip and looking away for a second.

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Lucy look down at my hand around hers. But, she didn’t let go. She held onto my hand, smiling softly.

I think I did it.

-----------

We are now boarding flight 7304 to London.”

The boys and I shared a look, and sighed. We got up, and the girls did too. Simone started hugging each of us, so the girls started to follow suit.

Kelly hugged me goodbye first, since Simone had hugged Zayn first. “See you, Niall,” she said.

“Bye, Kelly,” I said, hugging her back. “Don’t stop drawing, okay? You’re an amazing artist,” I told her.

Kelly beamed, hearing this. “Thanks, Niall,” she said. “Bye,” she said again, and let go.

“Bye,” I told her, and then was hugged by Ana. “Bye Ana,” she said to me.

“Later, Niall,” Ana said as she hugged me. I hugged her back.

“Harry showed me that poem you wrote,” I said, and she blushed. “No, wait. I thought it was really good. Keep writing,” I told her.

“Thanks, Niall. That means a lot,” she said, as her cheeks went back to their normal color.

“No problem. See you later, Ana,” I said.

“Later,” she said, and gave me a smile before letting go. Then, I was hugged by Simone, incredibly tightly.

“Whoa,” I said, laughing a bit. “I’ll miss you too, Simone,” I told her.

“I know you like my sister. Treat her right,” she told me. “When you’re with her, I mean.”

“I will,” I told her. “I promise.”

“Good,” Simone said. “Bye, Niall.”

“Bye, Simone. Stay awesome,” I told her.

“Stay Irish,” she said, giving me a smirk.

“Not sure how to take that…” I said.

“Just take it. Bye, Niall,” she said.

“Bye, Simone,” I said, and we let go. Then, Courtney hugged me. “Bye, Courtney,” I said, hugging her back.

“Bye, Niall,” she said. “Thanks for the best summer ever,” she added.

“Thanks for sending the letter that got our attention,” I said.

“Lucy almost didn’t want to send it,” she admitted.

“Why not?” I asked.

“She just didn’t know if it was even worth trying to send it, you know? She didn’t think any of you would see it, or care if you did.”

“I’m glad you girls convinced her to send it,” I said, smiling. “By the way, since the boys and I stink at dancing, mind giving us some pointers later?”

“I’ll Skype you sometime and show you some of my best moves, then,” Courtney said, smiling.

“Thanks, Courtney,” I said.

“No problem. Bye, Niall,” she said.

“Bye,” I said, hugging her one last time before Lizzie took her place. “Bye Lizzie,” I said, hugging her.

“Bye Niall. Make sure to joke around with Louis a lot so he stays used to my sarcasm,” Lizzie said, smirking a bit.

“Trust me, there’s no way any of us can possibly get to your level besides him,” I said, laughing a bit.

She smirked. “Great,” she said.

“So, stay sassy. Louis needs someone to go back at him,” I told her.

“You think I won’t?” she smiled.

I shrugged, giving her one last hug.

“Bye, Niall,” she said.

“Bye, Lizzie. See you later,” I said, and then she let go. Then, there was Lucy. I hugged her tightly. “Bye, Lucy,” I said.

“Bye, Niall. I’ll miss you,” she said to me, hugging back.

“I’m coming back for you, I promise,” I said to her, smiling a bit.

“Did you really just use one of your song titles to make me feel better?” Lucy asked, raising an eyebrow.

“Pretty much,” I said, shrugging. “Did it work?”

She smiled at me. “Yeah,” she said.

I smiled a bit, hugging her again. “Keep singing. Maybe you’ll be a star someday,” I said.

“You really think so?” she asked me.

“I know so. You have the talent,” I assured her.

“Thanks, Niall,” she said. “Bye,” she said.

“Bye, Lucy,” I said, kissing her forehead. Then, she let go, and the boys and I walked to get our boarding passes checked so we could board.

Zayn got in line first, and got his checked. He was about to go onto the jetway to board the plane, but he heard Kelly speak up. “Zayn?” she asked softly.

“Yeah?” he asked, turning around. Kelly ran at him, and pressed her lips to his in a quick kiss. Then, she pulled away. He looked down in her, in awe.

“Bye, Zayn,” she said.

“Bye,” he said softly. Then, he walked onto the jetway, in a bit of a daze. The rest of the boys and I shared a look, smirking.

“Zayn and Kelly, sitting in a tree,” Louis began, smirking as he got his boarding pass scanned.

“Oh shut up,” Zayn called back to him, causing the boys and I to erupt in laughter.

The rest of the boys and I got our boarding passes scanned and followed Zayn and Louis onto the jetway and onto the plane. I took my seat as we got on, and pulled out my phone. We had some time, so I was going to send a text to my parents to say I was flying back towards home.

Then, just as the last few people were boarding, I got a text from Lucy. I opened it up, curious about what it said.

From: Lucy

The girls and I r going 2 spend winter break @ a cabin up north. Wanna join us?

I looked back at the boys and showed them the text. They looked at me, and nodded, saying yes.

I sent a text back quickly.

To: Lucy

We’ll b there

I slipped my phone back into my pocket as the plane doors shut, and we were off. The best summer ever was over, but we had something great to look forward to.
