Izuku (POV)
Nighteye- Interesting. You want to do a work study here because you think that doing so will make you stronger.
Izuku- Yes sir! Please let me!
Nighteye- We'd need to draw up a contract.
Izuku- Of course! Yes! I brought one.
Nighteye- You will not interrupt me while I'm speaking to you.
Izuku- Sorry sir!
I hand him the contract.
Nighteye- Once I stamp this document, you'll officially be contracted with my agency for a work study.
Izuku- Yes sir!
Nighteye- You have to understand that this will be nothing like the week long internships that you students take on so casually. You must work here for a minimum of four months and will be paid wages. However, your academic responsibilities will likely suffer due to absences you'll rack up. Which means your classmates will pull ahead of you.
Izuku- I understand that but.......if I worry about what everyone else is doing, I'll never be number one.
Nighteye raises his stamp and slams in down but misses the paper.
Izuku- Uh sir. I think you missed.
Nighteye- Because I am not approving this.
Izuku- What?
Nighteye- I understand how working here would be beneficial to you. But what benefit would you bring to my agency? This office currently runs smoothly, with two sidekicks and one work study student already under my employ. So why would I add you on? How can you contribute to society? How can you be useful to others? In order to be acknowledged, you must be able answer those questions unequivocally. All Might showed his worth using power and humor. He gave hope to those who lived in fear of criminals. That's why people were happy to acknowledge him.
Izuku- You're right. I need to find out how I can help the world.
Nighteye gets up from his desk.
Nighteye- It's time to show me what you would bring to the table. Using actions, not words. Three minutes. You have three minutes to try and take this seal from me. If you want to work as a hero under my guidance, then stamp that contract yourself.
Izuku- Wait what?
Nighteye- I'm saying that even though you don't seem to possess a single ounce of humor in your body, I'm still giving you a chance. The two of you, go wait outside.
Mirio & Bubble Girl- Sir yes sir.
Nighteye- Once more with feeling.
MBG- Yes sir!
They exist leaving me and Sir Nighteye.
Nighteye- I'll take no offensive measures during this time, and you're welcome to attack me in any manner you desire. Don't concern yourself with what happens to this room. Just come and get it.
Izuku *mind*- Nighteye's quirk is....No. It's no time to strategize. I've just got to get that seal. I'll forge my own path to the number one spot! One For All: Full Cowling,
Full Cowling activates and I rush him from the front.
Nighteye- An approach from the front. But it's merely a feint and a failed grab.
He read my movements with even breaking a sweat. I land on his desk and jump at him again.
Nighteye- And then another jump attack, to no avail. I can see everything.
Izuku *mind*- I knew it! Still. Maybe if I just keep trying moves...
I reach for the seal yet Nighteye retracts it. I try a couple more times only to come up with the same result. I throw my backpack at Nighteye and immediately sprint at him so I could grab the seal as soon as the backpack made contact with him. He's gone in an instant and I touch is the door behind where he was.
Nighteye- Is that all you've got? I thought you were attempting to show me your usefulness. This is a waste of time.
I continue to attempt to get the seal but Nighteye is just too slick.
Nighteye- One minute passes. He backs up briefly. And appears nervous.
He read what I was going to do before I do them again.
Nighteye- Finally understanding that he can't overcome my Foresight. The activation requirements are secret.
Izuku *mind*- It doesn't matter how many different moves I try. He's one step ahead. There's gotta be a way to slip past his quirk.
Nighteye- I had high expectations for you. Until now. You have the power to become a symbol, but you're mediocre. Meanwhile, villains everywhere are getting restless, and gloom is creeping closer. Just think about what your former friend did. A dark path he has chosen and with powers like that and as smart as he is, there's little doubt in my mind that he's going not going to be silent and off the grid for long. And you as his supposed best friend, you have the power to get him back to the right state of mind and abandon the path he's chosen. Yet here you are. Failing. A pity All Might chose wrong after all. Mirio should've inherited the power.
Izuku- What are you talking about? "Chose wrong after all"?
Nighteye- Don't get me wrong, I do love and respect All Might. But I don't understand why he chose you. How can you succeed him when others could do it far more better. Speaking of inheritance, I do remember a certain Nakamura as a candidate as well. Guess we all know how that turned out.
Izuku *mind*- I guess I never really thought about it, but of course there were candidates before me. Which means Togata was in the running to inherit One For All. Does he know that? How did Nighteye and All Might choose him? Or does All Might even know about any of this. And if so, why didn't he tell me before?
Nighteye- You think you have time to stand there frozen? Or are you just getting tired, running out of ideas. I was honestly a bit curious when Mirio told me he was going to bring you here to introduce you. But it turns out it was a waste of time. There is a true candidate far more worthy than you or that turncoat friend of yours to inherit One For All. As such, I cannot acknowledge you.
Izuku *mind*- I have to remember the words All Might said to me that fateful day. I have to keep fighting. Also, how dare he talk about my best friend like that? What right does he have to judge him based off a single mistake he's done? Sora is lost in the dark but I can bring him back! I'll go beyond so this guy can't react even if he can foresee my movements. All Might chose me for a reason! Not Mirio! Not even Sora! ME! He wanted me to have his power! And with this power I'm going to take that stamp from you, prove myself, and make you shut the hell up about my best friend!
Izuku- I will make you acknowledge me.
I move all around the room a lightning speed until I make way for the seal but he clenches it in his hand.
Nighteye- Gran Torino's style. But you're a mere shadow of the original. For the next hour, provided the conditions are met, I can see what you'll do, wherever you go. In case you're interested, two minutes from now you'll be slumped on the floor with neither the seal nor the contract. You've looked unsure since this trail's beginning. But All Might certainly must've taught you better than that. Fear and indecision are luxuries a top tier hero cannot afford. Someone who understands that will always act with vision and purpose. You must've been told this countless times, but now, when your training's being put to the test, you choke. You said you'd make me acknowledge you, but the more I see, the more convinced I become that you will ultimately fail.
Izuku- He said I could do it!
Nighteye- Who said that? One of your little friends? Sora?
Izuku- The greatest hero the world had ever seen!!!
I fly past him and throw a bookshelf full of books at him.
Izuku- Sorry but you did say not to worry about the room right?
Izuku *mind*- He can see what I'll do wherever I go. Why did he word it that way? What exactly is Nighteye seeing? Everything that's going to happen? Or only the actions of a specific target: me. Time to test my theory. I'll scatter objects at random. If I'm his sole target, then his Foresight won't be able to reach them. Nighteye. I'm not giving up now. Or ever!
With all the books and papers all scattered in the air around Nighteye, his guard is down and the seal is exposed. I leap for the seal at max speed with both hands outstretched.
Izuku- Whether you like it or not, I am All Might's successor!
He moves out the way last second,
Nighteye- That doesn't alter what I see.
Izuku- Not yet!
I didn't see where I was going and I crash face first into a wall. I slide down leaving a trail of blood going down the wall.
Izuku- I'm...not......done.
Nighteye- It's over.
Izuku- No it's not!
Nighteye- Three minutes have passed.
Izuku- What?
Nighteye- You're All Might's chosen successor? It beggars belief. You devised only a single plan and it failed spectacularly. Leaving you worn out.
Izuku- I didn't botch the test cause I'm tired.
Nighteye- Then what happened?
Izuku- I realized I was about to step in the poster for All Might's tenth anniversary as a hero. The one that was never for sale.
The door swings open and enters Mirio and Bubble Girl.
Mirio- And cue our well timed return.
BG- You're done right sir? That loud bang at the end sounded really final.
Nighteye- I'll take the boy Mirio.
Mirio- That's awesome!
Izuku- What? I don't understand. I didn't do either of the things you asked me to.
Nighteye- I told you to take the seal from me and stamp the contract yourself, but I didn't say you'd be rejected if you'd fail.
Izuku- Yeah but....
Mirio- Congrats Midoriya. You pulled it off. So, he made you laugh after all.
Nighteye- I already decided to take you on when I heard you were coming. I also knew you that you weren't entirely lacking in skill and intellect. But I still wanted to see it for myself. The symbol of peace is gone, and the people are looking not for a dim light, but a dazzling one. You'll work here alongside professionals. And you will see. Regardless of All Might's mandate, you are not worth of his power. Neither was your friend.
He hands me the seal and makes me stamp it. He taking me on to see me give up. He doesn't accept me as All Might's inheritor and still believes Togata should've been the one. And for more reasons than he's letting on, he doesn't like Sora one bit. But that's okay. I'll make him open his eyes and show why he's wrong.
Izuku- I look forward to working with you.
