36: (Ya Seen)- Ya Seen

No. 36 (Revealed at Mecca)

83 verses in 5 Sections

Sūra Yā-Sīn (Arabic: سورَة یس) is the thirty sixth of the quran. It is a makki surah  in the twenty second and twenty third of the Qur'an. The sura is called so because it begins with (muqatta'at): "Ya" (ی) and "Sin" (س). According to hadiths, Sura Yasin is one of the most virtuous suras of the Qur'an such that it is referred to as the "Heart of the Qur'an".

Feature of surah

This Surah has been revealed at Mecca. It contains eighty three verses and has been entitled by the name of its first verse, which is from the abbreviated letters, Ya-Sin.

The subjective points of this Surah are based on axis of beliefs. Teaching it to the children and gifting the reward of its recitation to the dead have been recommended.

This holy Surah begins with Allah's testifying upon the prophethood of the Prophet of Islam (S) and it continues with the statement of the prophethood of three Divine prophets.

In a part of this Surah, some verses of the greatness of Allah in the world of existence as the sign of Unity have been pointed out. In another part of it, the matters concerning to Resurrection, questions and answers in the Court of Hereafter, and some specialties of Paradise and Hell are mentioned. In some Islamic narrations, this Surah has been introduced as 'The heart of Qur'an'.

___

Virtues

According to numerous Islamic traditions which have been vastly received on this concern, Surah Ya-Sin is one of the most important Suras of the Qur'an, in a manner that it has been introduced in some traditions as 'The Heart of the Qur'an'.

A tradition narrated from the Prophet of Islam (S) indicates he said:

"Everything has heart (centre) and Ya-Sin is the heart of the Qur'an."

This very meaning has been narrated in a tradition from Imam Sadiq (as) who, at its end, adds:

"Whoever recites Surah Ya-Sin on a day before sun sets, during the whole day he will be protected and sustained (affluently); and whoever recites it at night before sleeping, one thousand angels will be for him to protect him from any accursed Satan and any impediment."

And after it, he (as) mentions some other important virtues for it, too.

There are so many other Islamic traditions on this regard mentioned in the Sunnites and Shi'ites books that if we want to reiterate them, it will be a long explanation. Thus, it must be confessed that there are few suras of the Qur'an which have so many virtues in them.

As we have said, these virtues are not for those who only recite the words of it and forget its meanings, but this greatness is for the sake of the magnificent content of this Surah.

The content of the Surah is awakening, faith-giving, giver of responsibility, and increaser of piety in man, in a manner that when a person contemplates in it and this contemplation reflects in his deeds, it brings the goodness of this world and the next for him.

Lessons

Known as the heart of the Quran to many, Surah Yasin is one of the most beloved Surahs in the Quran. All around the world, millions of Muslims memorize and recite this Surah.

Here is a brief summary of Surah Yasin taken from my book :

This is a famous Makkan Surah, although most of the virtues attributed to it are based on weak or fabricated Hadiths. The theme of the Surah is Tawheed, but in this Surah there are three different methods used to show the Oneness of Allah. (, P. 66)

It is a Surah about the Oneness of Allah, and we should reflect on that whenever we recite this Surah.

In this short article, I want to reflect on three powerful lessons I learned when studying Surah Yasin:

1. The Crowd isn't always right

The main story in this Surah is about a city to which three prophets were sent. The Quran does not mention the names of the Prophets or the city. This information is not important, as Allah wants us to reflect on the lessons from this story instead.

In this story, the entire city rejects the prophets, except for one man. He believes and openly calls his people towards the truth. For his courage, he is killed by his people. Allah enters him into Paradise as a reward for his sacrifice.

The lesson here is clear: the truth isn't always with the majority. And we must stand clearly for the truth, even if we are the only people doing so.

In this era, when so many Muslims are changing Islam to suit liberal values, we must stand firm on our principles even if nobody else is doing so.

2. We may only find success in the Afterlife

Many modern Self Help programs pitch the idea that you are the captain of your own fate. They claim that you can change your future and get whatever you want in this world. As Muslims, we must reject this idea.

Yes, we aim high, work hard and strive for noble goals. But we know that success comes from Allah. He is in charge of our faith. Allah controls our destiny, and all victory comes from Him.

In this story, the people rejected the prophets. Only one person believed the prophets. The people killed this man too. No amount of Self Help advice could change that. It was their destiny to face these challenges.

In return, they did not see much in terms of worldly victories. Instead, they attained Paradise which is the ultimate victory!

Sometimes we lose sight of what really matters. Paradise should be our real goal. As we continue to strive and work hard in this world, we should also be happy with whatever destiny Allah chooses for us. Knowing that our real success lies in the Afterlife.

3. Allah's Signs Are All Around Us

The bulk of Surah Yasin focuses on the signs of Allah in this universe. We live in an era of Atheism and Agnosticism. Part of the reason for this is that we have surrounded ourselves with man-made inventions and forget to reflect on the miraculous creations of Allah that surround us.

Take some time out of your busy life to spend time in nature. Soak in the beauty of Allah's Creations all around us. Gaze at the stars and study the universe. The more you reflect, the stronger your faith in Allah will grow.

The proof of the design exists in the beautiful design of everything around us. We just have to stop to look and we will see it everywhere!

Almighty Allah revealed Quran 1400 years ago to His messenger Muhammad (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) to spread all over the world. There are many rewards and virtues of reading Quran proved by many hadiths. For example there is an authentic hadith of At-Tirmithee:

Hazrat Anas radiyallahu anhu reported Allah's Messenger sallallahu alaihe wasallam as saying,

"Everything has a heart and the heart of the Holy Qur'aan is Yaseen. Allah Ta'ala will record anyone who recites Yaseen as having recited the Holy Qur'aan ten times." At-Tirmithee

In my answer you will have a review of what is written in Surah Yaseen and came to know why it is called heart of Quran.

Surah Yaseen:

Every Surah of Quran is important and contains deep meaning but every thing has heart and heart of magnificent Quran is Surah Yaseen. It is the 36th surah of Quran and has 5 Rukus and 83 verses and is a meccan Surah.

Surah Yaseen is divided in to three reasoning sections. We can also call these sections as themes of Surah yaseen. These themes are basics of Islam and can be classified as Summary of whole Quran. These Sections are,

Tau heed (Allah is one and only):-

Allah clearly mentioned in the Surah that He is the real supreme and only power controlling the universe. Arguments against tauheed are given from signs universe, day night, vegetation and existence of man himself. Allah is free from all weakness and emotions and ruling this and every existing universe Alone. Even Allah decides who will believe Him and who will not.

Risalah (Muhammad (PBUH) is the messenger of Allah for the betterment of mankind):-

People of Quresh deny the Muhammad when he starts preaching Islam. They said you are same like us and can't be a prophet. On that moment Allah reveals the ayah of Surah Yaseen and tell HIS Prophet not be worried that this is not the new behavior, earlier people did the same, When Allah sent messengers to them.

"Tell them, for instance, the story of the people of the habitation when the Messengers came to it. We sent to them two Messengers and they denied both. Then. We sent a third one to strengthen them, and they all said, "We have been sent to you as Messengers." The people said, "You are no more than men like us, and the Merciful God has sent down nothing. You are only telling a lie." (Al-Quran 36-13 to 36-15)

The Judgment Day

This is the third main discussion held in Surah Yaseen. People asked Muhammad, when the judgment day will come so Almighty answered that Question that the judgment day will come in a single blast and so suddenly that no body will get a chance to make a wish or return to his home. Every dead will come out of his graves and presented themselves in front of Allah. When the resurrection carried out everyone will be rewarded with the justice according to what he or she has done in this world. The one who follow the message of Muhammad will enjoy paradise forever but the judging criteria will be very hard, Body organs will speak and tongue will remain silent. You can see verse number 48 to verse number 65 of Surah Yaseen.

Peace! :)

Hadiths

There are a number of ahaadeeth which speak of the virtues of this soorah, most of which are, however, false and fabricated, and some of which are slightly weak (da'eef). We have not found any saheeh hadeeth which speaks specifically of the virtues of Soorat Ya-Seen.

Among the reports which have been narrated concerning its virtues but classed as da'eef by the scholars of hadeeth include the following, which we are only quoting here to warn about them:

"Everything has a heart, and the heart of the Qur'aan is Ya-Seen; whoever reads it, it is as if he has read the Qur'aan ten times."

"Whoever reads Soorat Ya-Seen in one night will be forgiven in the morning."

"Whoever continues to read it every night then dies, will die as a shaheed (martyr)."

"Whoever enters the graveyard and reads Soorat Ya-Seen, their (punishment) will be reduced that day, and he will have hasanaat (reward) equal to the number of people in the graveyard."

For a believer there is reward against each word of Quran that is recited. This recitation of The Holy Quran in addition to adding religious reward also influences on the life of a person in numerous ways. Moreover, besides the general text of Quran, there are special and more reverend chapters compared to others. One of such parts of Quran is the Surah Yaseen.

Surah Yaseen is one of the most reverend Surah of Quran and Muslims all over the world memorize it, recite it, and listen to its recitation with great respect and sanctity. There is a reason behind the greater prestige of Surah Yaseen as it is mentioned by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in His various hadiths entailing numerous benefits of its recitation. The lines below discuss the major benefits of reciting Surah Yaseen.

1. The Heart Of Quran:

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said in one of His hadiths in the following way:

"Surely everything has a heart, and the heart of the Quran is Yaseen. I would love that it be in the heart of every person of my people." (Tafsir-al- Sabuni Vol.2)

From this hadith of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) it becomes clear that like all other things that have a heart, Quran also has a heart and it is Sura Yasin. From this a person can only guess the importance of Yaseen, as if a single word from Quran carries great reward then the heart is surely to reward more and greater than that. Moreover, the other thing that becomes clear from this hadith is the fact that Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) showed His likeness for the memorization or remembrance of Yaseen by His followers.

2. Grand Reward:

Another great advantage or benefit of reciting Sura Yaseen is mentioned in the following hadith of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH):

"Whoever recites Yaseen once, Allah will record the reward of reciting the Quran ten times." (Tirmidhi 2812/A)

This hadith does not require any explanation as it is clear from it that reading Yaseen once is equivalent to reciting of Quran ten times. Therefore, all the more reasons for a Muslim to memorize Surah Yaseen so that it can be read couple of times in a day to get grand rewards the worth of which is even beyond human comprehension.

3. Intercession:

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said:

"Indeed in the Noble Quran there is a Surah, for its reading will intercede and will be a means of forgiveness for listener. Listen carefully, it is Surah Yaseen, in the Torah it is called Muimmah."

It was enquired, "O' Messenger of Allah, what is Muimmah?"

Prophet (PBUH) replied:

"It contains for its reader the benefits of this world, it removes from him the dread of the next life, and it is called Dafiah and Qadhiyah."

It was asked again, "How is this Surah Dafiah and Qadiyah?"

Prophet (PBUH) replied:

"It takes away from its reader all afflictions and fulfills his need. Whoever recites it, it will be made equal to twenty pilgrimages. Whoever shall listen to it, it will be as thousand dinars, which he has given as charity in the path of Allah. And whoever shall write it and then drink it, it will enter into his heart a thousand cures, a thousand radiant lights, a thousand times more increase in belief, a thousand mercies, a thousand blessings, a thousand times more increase in guidance, and will remove from him all gall and disease." (Tirmidhi)

This hadith of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) explains the magnanimous and diverse range of benefits it carries. Moreover, the intercessional benefits of it are not limited to the person who recites it only, rather the benefits also take into consideration the person who listens to it and who uses Surah Yaseen in the unconventional way of writing it and drinking it. Therefore, no matter in whichever way Surah Yaseen is interacted with, it results in opening the doors of countless blessings and benefits for a believer.

4. For The Dying Person:

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said in one of His hadiths:

"Recite Yaseen on those who are dying." (Dawud)

From this hadith it becomes clear that Surah Yaseen is a recommendation pertaining to attending of a dying person. A person who is dying needs comfort and some kind of spiritual help to pass on to the next world with ease, therefore, at such a time if there is the Heart of Quran being recited, it surely helps the dying person and brings ease and peace to the excruciating process.

5. Forgiveness:

Regarding the forgiveness benefits of Surah Yaseen, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said the following:

"Whoever recites Surah Yaseen at night seeking the pleasure of Allah, that night he will be forgiven." (Abu Nuaym)

This hadith also makes it clear that if Surah Yaseen is recited with true and pure intentions of pleasing Allah Almighty, then the ultimate result is the person who recites it during the night will wake up free of sin the next morning. Therefore, if a believer ensures reciting Surah Yaseen before going to sleep and thinks in his heart and mind that it is done for the pleasure of Allah Almighty, then he or she should remain confident that their sins will be forgiven while they are asleep.
