Chapter 3: Braveness

As the bus continues moving, Swara opens her eyes, all comfy and warm as a yawn leaves her mouth. Her narrowed eyes had widened as her sleep had run away. Her eyes slowly move around the bus and she sees people relaxing as they're sleeping. Her eyes stop at the most irritating face, which was of her Jungly Billa who was peacefully sleeping.

"After ruining my peace see how peacefully this Jungly Billa is sleeping." She sighs to herself in a low tone, rolling her eyes and gazing away "Soon this peace will fly." She adds, thinking of the possible ways she could do that.

Groans had caught her attention as she stares forward, seeing few people starting to wake up from their tranquil and soothing sleep, not very happy about waking up.

"Ma'am, your ticket." Her eyes move to the conductor who forwards her the ticket, she blinks at him and then arches her eyebrows "But I didn't buy any ticket. . ." She trials off softly as she responds to the conductor.

"Bhai brought it for you." This time her forehead creases as the conductor blinks at her.

"Bhai?" The conductor nods and Swara glances around, trying to figure out who 'Bhai' was.

"He's there." The conductor mumbles, seeing Swara searching for him and to help her out, he decided to point towards Sanskaar.

Swara follows his finger and looks on. "He payed for my ticket?" She asked, this time being slightly louder.

Upon realising how loud she was, she felt awkward because of the stares the awaken people gave her. "Sorry." She softly mumbles, apologising and looking back at the conductor.

"This Jungly Billa is your Bhai?" She asks and yet again feels loads of stares stuck on her face.

"Is there a problem? Why are you all staring at me like that?" She questions, not feeling comfortable with their 'continuously staring' trait.

"How can you call Bhai those words?" The conductor queries, shocked to see her fearless side.

She diverts her gazes from the people to the conductor "How can he be your Bhai if you're his father's age?"

The conductor sighs, realising Swara wasn't aware of Sanskaar and takes a seat besides her, ready to tell her everything.

"Not that Bhai. Bhai as in Dada." The conductor tries to explain and Swara shakes her head in disbelief "Why are you giving him so much respect? He doesn't deserve it." She responds.

"You're older than him so you should slap him, especially for misbehaving and acting like he's a God." She huffs, lashing out her complaints.

She hears some gasps and looks up, seeing the awaken people cover themselves with blankets and creases her forehead confusingly. Sanskaar, who was awake looks at her but doesn't react.

"Shhh, please don't say this." The conductor requests, hoping Sanskaar doesn't wake up but little did he know that Sanskaar was already awake and is now ready to listen to their further communication.

"We call him Bhai because he is our saviour. I agree he can be rude, mean and be an aggressive person but he's good from his heart. He show's it less and it's not his fault, the circumstances made him cold but trust me beta, he is the kindest soul that I have met. A man who can risk his life to save another, how can he be cruel?" The conductor adds, starting to introduce the Sanskaar she was aware of and she blinks at him confusingly, ready to listen.

"He fights against bad but never shows good, he can risk his life but never let anyone show gratefulness because he doesn't like people getting too close to him. He creates this fear for one reason and that is. . . Not to feel loved to later be left alone. Not so that people can respect him, yes, he does want respect but not love." The conductor adds, engaging into the deeper meaning behind the way Sanskaar lives.

Sanskaar, who was listening clenches his fist, not pleased with what the conductor was revealing.

"He doesn't let injustice happen. Though people say he's mean, rude, arrogant, cocky. He would never stop saving others from the wrongdoings. I don't understand how the police could declare his as 'the most wanted gangster', he does have that potentiality to kill but he chooses to deal it with violence rather than murder. . . He has that potency to overtake any Don that's running the city's, especially Bhao, the one who he's working under, and he doesn't feel the need to take over and neither the urge to do that. Everyone know him and are mainly scared of him. It seems like you were unknown to all of this so I told you." The conductor continues and gazes at Swara who was shocked.

The conductor realised his words were deeply taken in account by Swara, who was now eager to hear more about Sanskaar.

"He was only 15 years old. . ." The conductor sighs, preparing himself to travel back to the past.

9 Years Ago:

"Huhhh. I can't believe Mr Maheshwari! He didn't even send a car for me, this shows how much he cares." Sanskaar frustratedly huffs as he was walking down the roads, probably back from school, on his own.

A bus stops and Sanskaar's gazes move to the entrance, from where the conductor (the same one narrating) had stepped down from.

"Gosh Kaka!" He chirps with a smile, walking towards him.

"Beta, what happened? Why are walking on your own?"

Sanskaar frowns "He did it again. He didn't send a car to pick me up."

"Oh. Come with us then, we will drop you."

Sanskaar shakes his head negatively. "No Gosh Kaka, you take this trouble everyday and I don't want to trouble you again. I don't have any money with me either."

"So what? We will collect money from you whenever you have them with you." He responds with a smile and Sanskaar blinks at him, deciding to go with him or not.

"My Baba won't give me any money, he's stingy and selfish. Maa doesn't have any money with her at the moment so I won't be able to give it." Sanskaar replies, realising his state as he's now officially moneyless.

As an injured man runs, he clashes into Sanskaar and as soon as his chest touches Sanskaar's, Sanskaar pushes him to the side.

"Watch it!" He yells, stacking his balance and gazes at the man, who was bleeding from his head, nose, lip and stomach.

Gosh Kaka, the conductor widens his eyes as he looks at the man.

"B. . . Bhao." He stuttered, feeling his heartbeat increase due to the fear.

Sanskaar stares down at his white shirt, which was now covered with blood and looks on. "Oh no, now Mr Maheshwari would cook me alive."

"Save. . ." He trails off, not being able to complete due to the pain and injuries he was experiencing.

"My shirt." Sanskaar sighs, angrily staring at the man, who was known as 'Bhao'.

Footsteps were stumbling towards the place and Sanskaar turns, witnessing few men rushing towards them.

"Raghu." Gosh, the conductor gasped as the man in the white, who was walking with the other men, pulled out a gun.

Sanskaar realises Raghu and his men were after Bhao and they were the real reason how the blood had kissed his shirt.

Sanskaar turns towards Bhao, forwarding his hand. Bhao looks at him as he groans in pain. "Give me your hand, I promise I won't leave it." Sanskaar says and his words had impressed him, he connects his palm with Sanskaar's and Sanskaar helps him up. Seeing Sanskaar struggle, Gosh Kaka rushes to help. After placing Bhao on the entrance of the bus step, Sanskaar turns back around, facing Raghu who had stopped in front of him.

Gosh Kaka was worrying and shivering while Sanskaar stared at Raghu fearlessly in the eye.

"Ey! What are you looking at?" Raghu roars, glaring at Sanskaar.

"You see this shirt." He replies and Raghu's gazes lower "This is what you need to pay for. Who's going to pay for my new shirt, your Dad?"

His speech had angered Raghu and Raghu aims the gun at him. Gosh Kaka looks on along with Bhao.

"Leave. . . Him. Y. . . Your e. . . Enmi. . . Mity is w. .it. . .h me." Bhao manages to utter after a lot of struggle.

"He made a mistake and now he has to pay for it." Raghu angrily asserts as he grits his teeth, leaning the front bit of the gun on Sanskaar's head.

Seeing no fear in Sanskaar's eyes confused him "I've seen loads of movies, I think I can handle a villain like you." He replies and Raghu scoffs.

"You think you can defeat me? Well let's break your delusion shall we?"

"Yes, lets break your delusion." Sanskaar retorts and Raghu grasps on the gun tightly, ready to shoot Sanskaar.

"Sanskaar! What are you saying?" Gosh Kaka finally blurted, now scared for what will happen with Sanskaar.

"The truth Gosh Kaka." He replies and holds on to the front of the gun, lifting it and Raghu pulls the trigger due to the sudden move, Gosh Kaka jumped in shock as the bullet hit the tree.

Sanskaar knees Raghu in the part where it hurts the most, which had loosened Raghu's grip on the gun and Sanskaar pulls the Gun, moving away while aiming it at Raghu and his men.

"Stay away from me otherwise I would shoot." He warns, glaring at them.

"Go get him!" Raghu orders his men angrily as he grits his teeth, staring at Sanskaar.

Bhao's condition was critical, it seems like he can faint anytime now.

"Gosh Kaka. I don't know who's right and who's wrong. Please tell me." Sanskaar requests, slightly panicking as the men approached him.

"Raghu, Raghu is the wrong one. His eyes are on our freedom and our city, Kolkata. He only wants us to be his slave and that is why he's trying to kill Bhao."

"He killed m. . . My w. . . Wife." Bhao gasps, inhaling a deep breath and as soon as Bhao had completed, Sanskaar pulls the trigger two times. Shocking everyone, including the victim of the bullet, Raghu.

As Raghu touches his stomach, he falls onto the ground, gasping and eventually exhaling the last breath he had within him.

"Go or I'll shoot!" Sanskaar warns and the men run away, afraid that he would shoot them too as they merely had hockey sticks and chains.

Seeing the men disappearing, Sanskaar drops the gun and stares at Raghu, who he killed. Bhao looses conscious and Gosh looks at Sanskaar.

Bhao was rushed towards the City Hospital instantly after he had fainted. Sanskaar was sitting outside the operation theatre with Ghosh Kaka, reflecting on what he had done.

He had took a life and he realised what happened was reality, not fictional.

"Did I do the right thing Kaka?" He asks, facing Ghosh Kaka, warning an answer.

Ghosh Kaka lowers his gazes sadly, not wanting to scare his innocent heart by telling him the consequences.

Sanskaar looks away, staring at the floor. "Who is he?"

Gosh lifts his gazes, staring in space. "Bhao. I know him since childhood. We had spent our time growing up in the same environment and society. He doesn't do all of this for fun, he is bound by people's trust and belief in him. Like I'm a bus conductor, he was a normal milkman. Earning and living for his father. . . There was injustice happening with our village people, he couldn't stand it so he had decided to help out and clear all the negativity but during this process, they pushed him away telling him he had no status, no power, no money and that he was poor. All the money that he had earned used to go in for his father's nourishment. He barely had any money to provide food for himself. His father was his first priority and then he himself was second. He was patiently enduring all the struggles and tortures from the rich people who did injustice. Then one day, they tried to take our lands away from us, that time the patience of Bhao was tested. . . That land wasn't only our home, it was our life, our god. We used to grow foods on the farm and help ourselves, if we had lost that land then not only one but thousand of people would've died." Gosh explained, slightly getting emotional and he takes his glasses off, wiping his tears.

Sanskaar also felt bad and keeps his gazes lowered as Gosh Kaka was ready to narrate the remaining part of the story.

"After they forcefully took the thumb prints, Bhao went to the master and killed him. The master happened to be Raghu's father and that is why Raghu was trying to kill Bhao. After Bhao got rid of that demon, he started receiving bravery praises from the people and they started respecting him, calling him 'Nayak.' Their leader and saviour. He was like an angel sent from God to destroy the evilness in our village. After that his father had died, leaving him alone and he was broken, until a girl entered his life, she helped us find our scattered Bhao. The two eventually fell in love and then had a lovely daughter. She should be 11 years of age now, she was very sweet and soft spoken, just like an angel. Bhao had no regret of not having a son because he believed his daughter would've went further than his son. He treated his daughter like a princess and now. . . Bhabhi and she died. All because of that Raghu." Gosh Kaka completes, starting to sob as Bhao's wife was a wonderful lady and she and her daughter didn't deserve to die.

Sanskaar looks on and lifts his gazes, thinking about something. Gosh Kaka sniffs, wiping his tears and getting a hold of himself.

"Now he's a very respected man in Kolkata, our Dada who loves and cares for us." He sobs, inhaling a deep breath before putting his glasses back on.

The light of the operation theatre switched off and the doctors walked out. Gosh and Sanskaar stand up, facing them.

"Bhao is out of danger."

Gosh Kaka closes his eyes, joining his hands and thanking God while Sanskaar sighs a small breath of relief.

"Can we meet him?" Sanskaar asks and the doctors nod. "Not yet, we need to shift him to the ward and after that you can meet him. And you are. . .?" The doctor responds, confused seeing Sanskaar.

"The boy who kil. . ."

"Who saved Bhao." Gosh Kaka interrupted hurriedly, stopping him from revealing the truth to them.

Sanskaar turns his head to Gosh Kaka, staring at him confusingly.

"You were very brave out there." The Doctors praise and start walking away.

"Gosh Kaka, why didn't you let me tell them I. . ."

"Because you didn't kill Raghu, you saved Bhao." Gosh Kaka cuts in between, not allowing him to think he killed Raghu, rancher he wanted Sanskaar to know he merely saved a life of a good man.

Sanskaar nods, understanding what he meant.

Soon after Bhao was shifted to the ward, Gosh Kaka entered the room to meet him whereas Sanskaar was waiting outside patiently, not knowing what the consequences would be ahead.

Bhao slowly fluttered his eyes open, forcing them to stay opened. Gosh Kaka smiled as he saw Bhao open his eyes, now relieved that his saviour is still here to save them.

"B. . . Boy. Where's that Boy?" The words which had left Bhao's mouth.

"Outside." Gosh Kaka replies, understanding the hint and walks out to call Sanskaar.

"Bhao called you." Sanskaar gulps, nervously clicking his fingers while walking inside.

Bhao signs him to come near him and Sanskaar walks more closer with Gosh Kaka behind him.

"T. . . Thank you for saving my life." Bhao says, in a low tone as he did not have the strength to communicate in a normal tone.

Sanskaar, who was afraid Bhao would hand him to the police now curls a small smile.

"You're saying thank you to me?"

Bhao curves a small smile, blinking at him, which makes Sanskaar comfortable to blurt out his thought.

"I can't believe that the Akka Kolkata's Bhao would say thank you to me, a small little child."

Bhao painfully chuckles as he blinks at Sanskaar, realising something.

"You were v. . . Very b. . . Brave and courageous. To stand against wrong and to. . . Pull the trigger. I can see myself in you." Bhao reveals, feeling as if Sanskaar was a mini version of him.

"Your attitude was similar to mine. You don't get scared when wrongdoing is happening, right?" Sanskaar nods with a smile, answering his question.

"How old are you?"

"15 years old." Sanskaar replies and Bhao couldn't believe it, he stares at Sanskaar in amuse and then gazes at Gosh Kaka who nods positively.

"I was 18 when I had that courage in me."

Sanskaar starts counting on his fingers "So I have to wait till 3 years to do something like you so that people can call me Bhao?"

Bhao shakes his head "You already did something big, which could potentially ruin your life and I don't want that happening."

"How could it ruin my life? I saved your life and that isn't bad, is it?" Sanskaar questions, staring at Gosh Kaka who was silent.

"It isn't bad but for the law, it's bad."

Bhao was guilty as he believes Sanskaar's future was ruined because of him.

"What would the law do?" Sanskaar questions, walking towards the wall while facing it.

Gosh Kaka and Bhao stare at him with confusion, Sanskaar bangs his head on the wall twice, purposely wounding himself.

"Sanskaar Beta. . ." Gosh Kaka worriedly utters and Sanskaar turns to him, tearing his shirt. "It's an act of self defence and the police can't punish me, can they?"

Gosh Kaka and Bhao were stunned to see the smart card Sanskaar had played, Bhao was impressed and looks at Gosh Kaka who was staring at Sanskaar in disbelief.

"Who is this boy?"

"Durga Prasad Maheshwari's son, Sanskaar." Gosh Kaka reveals, cocking her head to the side while looking at Bhao.

"People will now fear me because I killed Raghu's life to save yours. Would that me a Bhao too?" Sanskaar happily questions and Gosh Kaka was now getting scared with his words.

Bhao shakes his head "No, to be a Bhao you need people to know you and to make that happen, you need to help people and treat them with kindness." Bhao explains and Sanskaar starts thinking.

"Do you want to be a Bhao?" Sanskaar nods and Gosh Kaka stares at Bhao.

"For that you need to complete your education first and after you complete your education, then remind me of our talk."

Sanskaar nods with a smile, walking towards Bhao again. "That day would come when people will call me Bhao. So this Bhao wouldn't reject the original Bhao's offer. I will be back."

Bhao curls a smile after hearing his words.

"Sanskaar!" Sanskaar hears his name being yelled out and rushes out to see who it was though he knew it was his mother, Annapurna Maheshwari.

"One day he will go ahead of me." Bhao proudly says, stunning Gosh Kaka.

"But Bhao. He. . ."

"I know he's a child and he might not be serious about it but if he does then he would become Kolkata's Shaasak and Nayak. The helper of poor and the justice leaguer. I can see a lion in him, who is ready to evacuate evil minded people. He would one day win everyone's heart with his words." Bhao explains, interrupting Gosh and Gosh Kaka nods, understanding Bhao's perspective.

"But for us, you will always be the lion and saviour." Gosh Kaka states, praising Bhao and making him smile.

The police didn't do much about it as Bhao had restricted them. The Police wouldn't have done anything to Sanskaar as they were tired of Raghu and his antics, they needed to end him but couldn't find a reason, now that he's dead and the reason was their favourite, Bhao, they decided to preview Sanskaar's case as an act of defence and self defence.

Durga Prasad was tired of Sanskaar and his stubbornness, Durga Prasad wanted Sanskaar to do well in future but his sayings had irritated him to the core.

"You will not go into all of that. Stay out of it Sanskaar, he's not the right person!" Durga Prasad yells, trying to keep his son away from that world.

"Why can't I? And I would, I don't care what you say. I will join Bhao's team and be his right hand!" Sanskaar retorts, walking away after stating his final decision.

It had been three years and Durga Prasad had thought Sanskaar was over his petty stubbornness as he went quiet after few days, lithe did he know Sanskaar was preparing himself to join as soon as his 18 birthday hits up.

After his 18 birthday, Sanskaar started being stubborn again and this time ended up meeting Bhao, reminding him of their talk.

"Bhao, you said I can after I finish my education. I'm finished now and I'm 18 years old too. . ." He trails off, hoping for Bhao to understand the rest.

Bhao nods, agreeing to his wish and Sanskaar smiles, taking blessings from Bhao. This news had reached Durga Prasad and it had fumed him. Durga Prasad didn't want his son Sanskaar to join Bhao whereas Sanskaar was rooted on his decision, joining Bhao under any circumstances.

Though Bhao wanted Sanskaar to stay besides him most of the times, he couldn't be harsh to Sanskaar's family, who loved him dearly so he allowed Sanskaar to stay in Kolkata by giving him small tasks every now and then but those small tasks had helped him gain name and respect. For some people, he was the bad influence whereas for the people he used to save, he was a saviour.

Two thoughts had clashed but he didn't care about anyone, he just cared about making his Bhao happy and he knew he could do that only if he keeps his people who are in need happy. For villains, Sanskaar became villain and for good people, he became good but the image of being rude was still there.

Gosh Kaka, the conductor finished narrating it and Swara was amused after hearing this. Swara's eyes move to Sanskaar, who looks away with attitude.

"Him and the saviour? I don't know if what you told me was true but this Jungly Billa is a Gunda (Goon)!" She responds, surprising Gosh Kaka and making Sanskaar angry.

Everyone drop their blankets and turn, fixing their gazes at Swara. "Don't stare at me like that. I'm telling the truth, him being a saviour is a joke itself. He nearly killed an innocent young girl yesterday and challenged me saying I can't do anything about it after I asked him to apologise." She adds, revealing the incident to them.

They look on but didn't have the courage to stare at Sanskaar. Though Swara had been effected with the story, she wasn't really showing it as she doesn't care about what he did in past because what he did in present matters more.

"I can't believe he kept you all blinded from his real form, which he showed me yesterday. You all shouldn't respect this Psycho Billa, you should courage up to slap him and give him a lesson." She adds, sighing and Sanskaar clenches his fist.

Though his mood was the reason Swara had ran away from the house, his inner self gave him motivation to pay for her ticket and take her to a place to live in. He knew Hyderabad was a beautiful city and also knew she would enjoy living there but where she would live wasn't his problem and he simply doesn't even care.

"Beta. . ." Gosh Kaka trailed off and Swara cocks her head to the side, looking at him "I know he's rude and arrogant but he isn't heartless." He continues and Swara shakes her head, not believing it at all.

"Kaka, I heard the way he was talking to you. Even after witnessing that, you want me to respect him and keep quiet? You may have the strength to tolerate his nonsense but I don't!" She declared, shocking the people in bus, especially Gosh Kaka, who was scared Sanskaar would explode on her.

Sanskaar gets irritated with her talk and looks outside the window, not wanting to see her face which he finds annoying. Swara realises a the ticket in her hand and stares at Gosh Kaka who stands up.

"Kaka, how much is the ticket?"

"800 Rupees."

Swara opens her handbag, finding her purse and Gosh Kaka looks at her. "Don't worry Beti, Bhai. . ."

"Swara never takes favours from anyone. I have money with me right now and I think I'm capable to pay for my own ticket." She sternly responds, pulling out her purse and viewing Sanskaar who was least bothered by her talks.

She gazes down at her purse and unzips it, taking out the money. "Where am I going to?"

"Hyderabad." Gosh Kaka replies and Swara creases her forehead. "I'll be travelling from Kolkata to Hyderabad?"

"Yes." Gosh Kaka responds and Swara sighs, handing Gosh Kaka 800 Rupees after successfully counting them.

Gosh was hesitant first but eventually grabs the money. He stands up, walking towards Sanskaar and handing him the money.

Swara zips her bag after putting her purse and ticket inside, now staring at Gosh Kaka's shivering hands.

Sanskaar harshly takes the money from him and the bus stops with a jerk, compelling everyone to move forward and smash onto the seat again. Due to the sudden stop, Gosh Kaka was about to fall and before he could touch the ground, Sanskaar holds onto his hand, preventing him from falling.

"Why have you stopped?" Sanskaar sternly asks, raising his tone as he stands up.

"T. . . There's someone in front of the bus." The Driver stutters, swallowing his spit as he sees men entering the bus from the entrance.

Sanskaar, up on spotting few sits down on his seat and bends down, hiding from them. Swara arches her eyebrows, not understanding why he did that and stares at the men walking inside.

"I bet this is his team who came to scare us so that he can show his power again. Let me handle them this time." She mummers to herself, standing up.

"Listen Jungly Billa's manhoos billiyan!" Everyone focus on Swara, who was bravely stood there. "What is this? How can you think that you would scare us by walking here with fake attitude?" She adds, snapping her fingers at them.

Gosh Kaka and Sanskaar looks on. "Is she mad or what!" He whispers to himself, now getting angry at her antics.

She walks toward the men, glaring at them. "How can you even think you would scare us with this toy?" She questions, looking the guy in the eye as she snatches the gun out of his hand. Surprising everyone.

"You really think we would get scared by seeing your fake gun?" She scoffs, gazing around at everyone who merely look at her.

"These men are here so that they can scare us and your so called saviour could save all of you become that. . . Nayak again." She explains, firmly believing this situation to be a stunt otherwise why would a guy like Sanskaar earn respect for saving people when all he did in front of her was nearly kill a life of an innocent.

"You. . ." The man was about to touch her when she moves away, glaring at him.

"You think you can scare me with all of this? Well in that case you're wrong. Go find someone else to play this trick on because it's not gonna work on me. How much did your Nayak pay you?" She lowkey insults Sanskaar, making him huff.

"Kaka stop her." He mummers and Gosh Kaka hears but is too shocked to react at the moment.

The men look at her as if she's mental.

"Someone call the mental asylum because this girls gone mad." Sanskaar loudly says, finally standing up and showing himself to the men.

As soon as Swara hears him, she rolls her eyes and holds the gun in the correct position with her hand.

"You're the one who's mad here." She retorts, turning towards him while aiming the gun at him.

Everyone gulp, including Gosh Kaka expect Sanskaar and the men, who merely look on.

"Bhai, she's doing our work for us." They whisper and the guy who was holding the gun looks at her keenly.

"Listen girl. . ." He trials off and she turns to him, aiming the gun at him.

The men back off while he was stood there. "This is a gun, not a toy."

"Enough! How many lies will you say? Do you really think the people in this bus are stupid? This gun is clearly fake and is here to scare us so the saviour can come and create another image."

"This girl will either get us killed or kill us." Sanskaar sighs frustratedly banging on the seat.

Swara hears him and turns towards him again. "Oh really? I would kill you. Only if I had the chance. It's my bad luck you see, despite having a gun I can't shoot you because it's fake!"

"The gun is real." Sanskaar angrily says, hoping she would understand even though he knew she wouldn't bother listening.

Swara, in her stylish attitude makes her aim the window behind Sanskaar and pulls the trigger. As soon as the bullet left the gun, the sound made Swara jump and everyone bent down, screaming. Sanskaar sees the bullet pierce into the glass and cause damage. Swara, who did not expect this to happen drops the gun, which Sanskaar catches and moves away, feeling her heartbeats increase.

She drops onto her seat and shivers, freezing for a moment as Sanskaar aimed the gun at the men. Ready to interrogate his way.
