Veena Devi and her son, Purab, had seen Thapki at her friend's wedding, where she sang for the couple.    It was a beautiful song that she sang.   Veena was watching her son, and it looked liked that Purab was mesmerized.   She nudge him gently, and he looked away from Thapki towards his mother.       He went back to staring at Thapki.   He quietly took a pictute of Thapki.

Veena decided to quietly ask around about Thapki.     She found out that her name was Thapki.  She was a sweet girl.  She was good friends with the bride.  Thapki and her mother, Jaya, lived with her uncle and his family.    She lived a comfortable middle class life whereas Purab and his family were wealthy.   

One day a marriage proposal came for Thapki.    It was from Veena Devi for her son, Purab.

When they had come to see Thapki,   Thapki looked surprised.   They looked very wealthy.  She couldn't figure out why they came to see her.   After all the greetings, and small talks were done.  Thapki and Purab went to another room to talk privately.

After a little while, Thapki said, "Please, reject this proposal"  and left the room.  Purab looked at her retreating figure in shock.  Then got up and followed her back to the living room where everyone was.  

Thapki's mama, "So bacho, what do you think?  Do you need more time or have you made a decision?"

"It's a yes from my end?"  stated Purab

"What?" said Thapki

"This is great news"  everyone happily said

"Wait!  You can't make this decision -"  said Thapki

"Shush, Thapki"  said Thapki's mami

"No Mami!  This isn't right"  stated Thapki

Veena and her family looked confused.

"I am sorry but you need to know the truth.  I had asked Purab to reject this proposal."

"Why beta?"  asked Veena

"Auntie.  Your family is very rich.  We are just a middle class family.  I don't want your family to feel any insults if Purab married me.  You see,  sooner or later, you will find out that my father left my mother.    He left her and didn't look back.  My mother didn't even know that she was pregnant.  The thing is my mother wasn't married to my father.  My father didn't care.   I learnt the meaning of bastard when I was five years old.     My mother is everything for me.  I don't want to leave her alone.  So it would be better if you reject this proposal now rather than get insulted later."  stated Thapki

"Thapki beta.   We knew your background before we sent the proposal.   You have overcome many hurdles in your life, with grace.     So what if your parents weren't married.  It makes no difference to me or my family.    What matters to me is who you are and how you treat your relationships.  Life is a series of ups and downs.    We liked how you have dealt with these issues in your life."  stated Veena

Thapki looked up shocked.   She didn't know what to say.   She kept looking at her mother and Purab's family.

"As I have said, I want to marry Thapki."  stated Purab.

"But you can't.  I won't take that risk.  You be better off with out me.  Please don't get me wrong, but I don't want to the reason, people will be insulting the family."  stated Thapki. 

"That is the reason we want you as our daughter in law, my Purab's wife.  We don't care what other people think.  What we care about is, how our family treat each other."  stated Dadi

"But what about" said Thapki

"No Buts.  I said I want to marry you and I will marry you"  stated Purab.

"Oye, you can't force me.  Got it?  I haven't said yes yet?" questioned Thapki

Purab smiled at her words

"I'm very convincing.  I will marry you and you will say yes."  smiled Purab.

"I don't believe in love.   Love and marriage is not for me."  stated Thapki

"I will change your mind."  Said Purab

"Why me?  After all, you are a rich bachelor, why do you want to marry me?  You can marry anyone.   Why not marry someone  else."

"I don't know why but there something about you, that makes me happy.  When I see you,  I feel happy." stated Purab

"Well, that could be that your happy pills are working.  That has nothing to do with me."  said Thapki

"Thapki beta, please agree.  Don't worry  about me.   Let the goddess take care of everything.  What will happen will happen."  stated Jaya

"But Ma-" said Thapki

"If you are so worried about your mother, after we get married, she becomes my mother too.  I will take care of her, just like I take care of Mom" stated Purab

Everyone was looking Thapki wanting to know what she was thinking.

"I never even thought of getting married.  And you want me to make a decision right away"  asked Thakpi.

"I just want a chance.   I want to marry you.  I want you to get to know me and say to marry to me."  stated Purab.

"You know my feelings about this,  I don't believe in love.    I am happy for the people that find love and are happy.   But I know alot of people aren't so lucky"  stated Purab

"I am asking for a chance.  Then you can decide on what you want."  stated Purab

Finally, Thapki agreed.   Thapki and Purab would go out for coffee, or visit each others houses.    Purab slowly convinced her to come and work for him.     She worked as his secretary, learning the ropes.   Slowly she started to fall for Purab.

Soon, Purab and Thapki got engaged, then married.

After they got married, they got settled in married life.   Thapki got busy keeping the house organized.   Purab started noticing that she was becoming more busy with the household chores.      He started pulling pranks on her, so her attention was on him and not the household things.  He wanted her back working at the office with him.    

After having a discussion with the family, Thapki decided that she would go back to work with Purab.    Purab was so happy that things were getting back to normal.  Thapki would be with him,  all day every day.
