MUSIC STING

SFX: CALM WAVES WASH ON A SHORE

TRENT: Captain Mary, I can’t thank you enough for what you’ve done…if there’s anything we can do in return…

MARY: Well it didn’t seem right to let you sink…After all, The Falcon was just caught in the crossfire more than once. (Pause) Wait, are you saying you actually were hiding some valuables from us?

TRENT: (Nervous laugh) Oh, no, nothing like that. But we do have most of our food stores. Perhaps you would like to join us for supper?

MARY: Well, I-

JENKS: What do you say Cap’n? An edible Christmas dinner too good to be true?

MARY: Well, just a quick one, there’s someone else we need to see…

MUSIC STING

A MAN’S SNORES,

SFX: A SWORD IS QUIETLY UNSHEATHED.

MARY: (Scathingly) Up and at ‘em Peacock. And don’t even think of screaming, or I’ll cut you in half before you can get the sound out.

PETOCK: Wah-how did you get in here?

JENKS: H’a couple drops o’ a little something h’in the wine jugs, h’and a quick climb up the trellis. Childs play Peacock, h’if you don’t mind h’a little dirt h’on your trousers.

MARY:  The Falcon wasn’t even a merchant ship, Peacock, the people on board didn’t have two pennies to rub together. And yet you sent my crew, Kristoff’s and who knows how many other pirate ships after it. Why?

PETOCK: You risked your neck to come here and ask why I sent you on a wild goose chase

MARY: I want to know what the point was! Those were good people, with families, and children-

PETOCK: (suddenly cold) Who, like you said didn’t have two pennies to rub together. Who were so far down the hiearchal ladder that in the great scheme of the world, they didn’t exist. No one would care if they sunk to the bottom of the ocean, and if a couple pirate ships were sunk as well fighting over the “spoils…”well, that would be considered a good days work. Don’t you think?

MARY: You’re a murderer.

PETOCK: (Chuckles coldly) My dear girl, are you really in the position to lecture me about morality? I have the law on my side, I have respectability, I am a member of her majesties Navy. You…have a ragtag bunch of criminals in tow, a bounty on your head and are wanted in at least ten ports on this side of the coast. You may call yourself a Captain, but you’re just a worthless criminal low life who will be judged and hanged for her crimes by people like me.

MARY: You will receive retribution for your crimes Peacock. If not in this world then for sure in the one that comes after this.

PETOCK LAUGHS, KEEPS LAUGHING.

JENKS: Cap’n, we should go.

MARY: Give me one moment Jenks. (Coldly) There’s one more thing I’d like to do.

PETOCK: Wah-wait, wait! What are you doing? Noooo!!!!

 MUSIC STING

SFX: OCEAN WAVES, BOAT CREAKING

JENKS: My turn for watch Cap’n. Get yourself h’off to bed.

MARY: I may just do that. Good night Jenks

JENKS: Cap’n

MARY: What is it, Jenks?

JENKS: You sure ‘anging Peacock h’out the window h’in ‘is drawers was the best idea?

MARY: I wasn’t about to kill him. Besides, like you said, he is more humiliated when his silk trousers are ruined. And I made sure to dump them all in the pig pen on our way out. He’ll have to wear cotton like ordinary officers until he can have new ones made.

JENKS: That h’old man was right Cap’n. You make h’a ‘orrible pirate

MARY: Yes. But someone very special to me said I make a good captain, and that’s worth even more to me. Good night Jenks. And Merry Christmas

SFX: BOOTS WALK OFF, FADE AWAY.

JENKS: Merry Christmas…(lovingly) Cap’n.

MUSIC STING

SFX: FIRE CRACKLING

JIMMY: Granny? You fell asleep in front of the fire.

OLD MARY: I did? Oh, silly me…Jimmy, help your Grandmother upstairs to bed please, this body isn’t what it used to be.

JIMMY: Gosh Granny, what happened to Captain Mary

OLD MARY: Oh she had quite a few exciting adventures my dear boy, before she settled down into quiet, ordinary life. If you’re very good, and come visit me again some time, I’ll tell you all about it.

JIMMY: Really? Oh boy!

OLD MARY: I remember there was this tall tale we heard about Captain Mary when she was in Spain, hiding from the army by pretending to be a foreign princess...

OLD MARY’S VOICE FADES AWAY
