The kit squirmed a bit. "Muffins," she squeaked.

Her mother nudged her. "You know it's time," she said.

Of course the kit knew. She has had her eyes closed for days now, and it was about time they were opened. But the kit was used to knowing everything by scent and texture. She definetely didn't feel like opening her eyes.

Her mother nudged her again, and now she had no other choice. She slowly, but eventually, blinked her eyes open. She could finally see the cat she knew as 'mother'. She was a white cat with black stripes. She had noticed other cats call her "Morningdew." That must have been her name. There was also a tom, whose scent she recognized. He, aside from a gray mark on his neck, was solid white. Like with Morningdew, Shiningkit had heard his name before, Sootthroat. And there was a small she-cat, who was solid white.

"Look at her!" exclaimed the tom. "Her eyes are shimmering in the light."

"Let's call her Shiningkit, then," smiled the kit's, well, Shiningkit's, mother.

Shiningkit squealed in glee. Now she had a name of her own. The small cat brushed herself up against Shiningkit. "Hi, I'm Merrykit!" she said.

"Cool!" said Shiningkit. She suddenly felt weird. "Um... mom. My eyes hurt."

Morningdew moved her paw like she was aiming for Shiningkit's face. Shiningkit squeezed her eyes shut. Once she was sure Morningdew wouldn't hurt her, she opened her eyes again.

"That's called a blink!" mewed Merrykit.

"Hooray!" said Shiningkit.
