Lagoon cats (Leptailurus aquatilis)

Lagoon cats a very elegant, medium sized cats who are around the same size as their closest cousin, the serval. They have very short, smooth pelts that shed water easily, and their coloration is widely variable, normally mimicking that of other fish but with a bit more of a distinct, cat-like look to it. They look mostly like a normal cat, save for their fins and gills. Their gills are very reminiscent to that of a shark, with a bit covering up the softer, very vulnerable gills. Their tail can really only be described as that of a combination between a fish's and a shark's, being very long, and vertical, while sporting a very fish-like fin at the end. They also have a fin on their back and a ruff-like fin on each side of their face. Their eyes are always a shade of teal, that doesn't vary too much, and their noses and paw-pads are always the same shade of dark-teal.

Lagoon cats normally live on their own save for small family groups made mostly up of a mom and her kittens or eggs. Occasionally, they will group together at popular hunting grounds, where they'll normally get together well and hang out with other Lagoon Cats. The only other time where they might be seen together is during mating season, where males will normally gather and search for females as a group. A female and a male may stay together for a couple nights, but the male will leave pretty soon after to live on his own. Other than that, they're normally territorial, often viciously defending both their land and ocean territory in fights that may last till the death.

The lagoon cats are unique compared to any other cat in many ways. One of the main ways they stand out from their non-aquatic relatives being that they've evolved to lay eggs due to their aquatic nature making it difficult to raise newborn kittens. They've also developed a way to keep from drying up, which they would if they couldn't produce the mist that surrounds them when they're out of the water. The mist does have it's disadvantages, making it difficult to see when they're out of water for too long, sometimes even getting to the point of blindness. They also can't survive in environments below freezing, as the mist surrounding them will freeze to their pelts, eventually restricting movement and leading to eventual paralysis.
