Katherine and Crutchie stood outside the lodging house staring after Jack. What was up with him? Then an even worse thought popped into her head. Did he kill my father? Crutchie must have had the same thought because he asked, "Is it possible that Jack could be the one who shot your father?" Katherine shook her head. "He didn't, he wouldn't", she said trying to convince herself. But the more she tried to deny it the more likely it seemed. "Why would he do it?", she said putting her head in her hands. She didn't stop the tears from flowing. Crutchie put a comforting arm around her shoulder.
The police officer looked at Katherine. "Are you sure he is the one?", he asked. "It's the only lead we got", another officer said, "Do you know where he is?" She shook her head. "That'll complicate things, but we'll start looking for him right away", the first officer said, "We'll get word to the other officers in the city."
Jack's POV
Jack turned the corner, then stopped. He peeked around the corner and saw two police officers talking. "I saw something over there", one of the officers said. "Let's go check it out", the other office said. The started to walk towards him. Jack bolted down the street and he heard the police shout after him. Jack looked over his shoulder and saw them chasing him. "That's Kelley", the first officer said to the other. Both officers grabbed their guns. Did Katherine or Crutchie figure it out and tell them. Why would they do that? Jack ran to the Brooklyn Bridge and jumped over the side into the freezing water. The police looked over the edge then went away. Jack swam to the supports of the bridge and stayed there until nightfall. Jack swam to the shore, shivering. He made his way through the city. Carefully avoiding all street lamps. I should leave New York now while I have the chance.

But I should see her before I leave.
