Katherine walked into her apartment and quickly closed the door. She sunk to the floor trembling with feelings of hurt and anger. I don't have time for this! I have to write. She tried to force the thought of Jack out of her head. She got up and went to her desk. She had to finish the article she started writing. She had until the end of the week to finish it. She tried to focus on her writing but her mind kept going back to the two times she saw Jack in five months. When she saw him walking into the lodging house two weeks ago and just ten minutes ago. I don't know what to write or what to do about him. I'll talk to Davey tomorrow. Maybe he'll know what to do.
The next day after work Kath found Davey at Jacobi's Deli with the newsies. Davey and Les had just started going back to school. She was relieved to see that Jack wasn't there with them. "Hey Kath", Crutchie greeted her. "Hi. Davey, can I talk to you?," she glanced at the other newsies, "Alone. Maybe?" Davey stood up, "Yeah. Sure." They walked outside. She knew the boys were watching them through the window. "Kath, what's wrong?", Davey asked. "Its Jack. I saw him last night." Davey's face changed from worried to anger. "What did he want?", Davey asked. "It seemed like he wanted to date me again which makes no sense. If he wanted to be with me he shouldn't have left", Kath said. "I'll talk to the boys. Maybe they'll know what's going on", with that Davey went back inside. Kath waited outside a little bit before walking back to her apartment to finish her work.
Jack's POV
Jack looked over the edge of his penthouse. He looked at the drawings of Katherine in his hand. Hot tears wear streaming down his face. Why wouldn't she let me explain?! Jack stuffed the drawings of Katherine in his pocket and just yelled, "WHY?!" He kicked the railing of the fire escape. He didn't care if the other boys heard him. "Jack, are you ok?" Jack turned around and saw Crutchie standing on the roof with him. "How did you get up here?", the words came out harsher than he meant. Crutchie flinched slightly, "Albert helped me up. Ya woke us up when you yelled. You okay?" Jack realized he shouldn't keep hiding what was wrong. It was only making it worse, but it was pretty easy to pretend everything was okay. Jack sighed, "I talked ta Kath today." "What did she say?", Crutchie asked. "She said she didn't want ta talk ta me or see me", Jack said, his voice cracking. Crutchie looked slightly shocked, "Well, it looked like ya ditched her." Jack looked hurt by what he said. "Ya guys all think I ditched her?", Jack asked. Crutchie nodded. "Well that ain't what happened!" Jack said without realizing he raised his voice. "Where were you then?" Crutchie asked. Jack looked down at the city below and said quietly, "The Long Island Refuge."
