Lily Evans makes a list about James Potter

Lily absentmindedly fiddled with the piece of parchment in her fingers. "stupid marauders" she cursed under her breath.

Professor Flitwick must have known it wasn't her fault. he must have been absolutely certain that this detention was undeserved because not only had he given the Marauders detention away from her, he had also he had simply given her a parchment and a quill and whispered in his friendly voice "if anyone asks you were doing lines" before trotting back to his table and climbing on the stack of books holding him.

Lily continued fiddling with the writing utensils. she was unsure of what to do. this wasn't her first detention (it was her second- the first had been all Marlene) but she was still quite a novice.

Suddenly there was a sharp rapping on the door. Professor Flitwick scuttled off his chair to the door, and pulled it open. Lily turned her head and saw a familiar head of black hair sticking up in every possible direction. she frowned. what was James Potter doing here?

He seemed to be explaining something to the professor. they were a sight to see. James Potter's hair may have been touching the ceiling from Flitwick's vantage point. they were at leaset two feet apart.

The professor nodded, and moved to let Potter into the room. "Sorry about this Ms. Evans, but there was an accident in the trophy room. Sirius Black now has received more detention days and he, Mr. Lupin, Mr. Pettigrew and Mr. Potter are now banned from ever serving detention together." there was a pause in which he muttered something along the lines of "over dramatic filch" before he continued, "which is why Mr. Potter will be serving detention with you. I'm sure you don't mind?"

"Not at all" she said, because she was supposed to. Potter took a seat behind her.

in truth, Lily did mind. but not for the reason she once would have. she was now sort-of-friends with James Potter, having being forced to become Head Girl alongside him and sharing a dorm. oh no getting annoyed because of Potter wasn't an issue. it was the fact that she wasn't sure how she felt about him. too many playfully uncomfortable jabs from too many people had caused her to begin questioning herself.

Did she have feelings for James Potter?

This had been the question plaguing the back of her mind for days on end.

An idea formed into her head, and then Lily Evans decided to do what Lily Evans did best: make a list.

she grabbed her quill off the table and dipped it into her inkwell, bringing it to her parchment.

'Reasons Why James Potter is Maybe Not a Horrible, Arrogant Toe-Rag and Why I, Lily Evans MAY Have More Than Platonic Feelings for Him. MAYBE'

1. He stopped hexing Slytherins (he still hexes snape but not unless he's triggered first which surprisingly happens a lot)

2. He's a genuinely kind person, he stops to help first yearns get around the castle, and helps the younger kids with their work

3. He seems to have matured! he stopped asking me out, and actually took out time to talk to me (he probably doesn't like me anymore)

4. He makes sure the Marauder's pranks are non-harmful nearly as much as Remus does. He even runs them by me sometimes to see if they would be appropriate

5. He's such a nice person. he always makes sure im comfortable in the dorm, and that everyone's okay with whatever's happening in the prefect meetings

6. he's... maybe.... kind of.. easy on the eyes

7. who am i kidding, bloody asshole's fit

8. seriously this one time i accidentally walked into his room and she was shirtless and my brian stopped functioning.

9. he also has like really nice eyes. and arms, and stomach and-

10. he's smart, he's good in school, and he takes his duties as head boy and prefect seriously, and doesn't slack them off as expected

11. he respects my boundaries in the dorm

12. we became friends this past year and he's quite funny?? bad jokes in a cute way??

13. bloody merlin he's not all bad

14. scratch that he's fucking brilliant

15. i think i might be in love with that wanker

16. what the actual fuck

Lily's head shot up. She knew her eyes were probably so wide, and her face so aghast she looked terrified. And she was rather shocked.

She was willing to admit that she fancied the boy sitting behind her, but being in love with him? LOVE was a whole different story!

Professor Flitwick gave her a weird look. "Lily, are you feeling alright? You don't look well"

From her periphery, she saw James' instantly look up, a concerned look splayed across his face. She ignored the flutter of her stomach.

"Uhm, I'm alright" she managed.

"No, Lily, I think you've learned your lesson from this detention why don't you return to your dorm?" Flitwick gently asked, leaping down from his stack of books, and walking over to her, worried for one of his best students.

Lily shook her head. "I'm alright sir, you don't have to-"

But Flitwick had already taken her stuff and was ushering her out of the door. "See you tomorrow, Ms. Evans, hope you're feeling better."

He climbed back onto his chair, as James' eyes caught the piece of paper fluttering to the floor.

Lily knew just who she had to talk to. So instead of heading to the Head's Dorm, she marched into Gryffindor Common Room.

"Is Remus Lupin here?" she asked a pale freckly first year. He turned scarlet and pointed to one of the corner couches, occupied by Remus and Peter.

"Not in detention lads?" she asked, dropping her bag on the table they were on.

"Could say the same for you," Remus grinned, closing his book. "Pete and I got rescheduled. Sirius is with Filch, and James with Flitwick, which i assume you already knew. we're going to be doing the same tomorrow, with Padfoot working with Filch, and Wormy with Sprout."

Lily nodded. "I need to talk to you" she said.

Remus narrowed his eyes. "Head's Dorm?" he asked.

"Don't leave me!" Peter whined.

"Sorry Peter," Lily winced. "Why don't you find Marlene, Alice and the others"

Peter grumbled as they walked away.

"So why me?" Remus politely asked, walking by her side.

"It's complicated" she said, unsure of how to begin. "See, there was this list," she dug her hand inside her pocket. When she found it empty she felt like she had left her vital organs a few steps back.

"Lily?" Remus said.

She paled. She'd left it there. She's left the fucking list in the same room as James Potter like the fucking dumb arse she was.

"Oi, Earth to Evans, you good" Remus was snapping his fingers in front of her.

"Oh, I'm so not good" she whispered. She quickly filled Remus in on the list, his eyebrows going higher and higher with every word.

"He'll be happy to know it" Remus grinned when she was done.

"Oh shut up you cheeky bastard, he may have ignored the paper"

"Knowing James Potter, that's highly unlikely"

"Oh!" Lily groaned, sinking to her feet.

"Come on now Lils, lets get to the Heads Dorm first" Remus gently helped her up and took her to the dorm. Right when he was outside, he winked at the portrait girl. She nodded. Lily didn't notice. "I should go, Sirius will have gotten back by now" Remus quickly told Lily, running away.

Lily scowled in his direction, absentmindedly walking into the dorm. And of course because she wasn't paying attention, or maybe it was the portrait girl, she tripped.

Well, she would have tripped, had a pair of strong arms not caught her in their enveloping scent. Oh how she wished for the floor.

"T-thanks" she stumbled out, moving as far away as she could from James.\

The boy in question was smirking like a maniac. "Why don't you sit Lily?" he suggested, dragging her over to the couch.

Lily shot him a faux confused look.

"Now, in the charms classroom, I had the pleasure of stumbling across a certain piece of parchment" He began.

Lily gulped. Oh she was a goner now.

"Yeah, see, and this parchment, was a list of sorts."

Oh no. Oh no. Oh no.ย  This was karma. she shouldn't have skipped that Slug Club party. Dammit Slughorn.

"And it was a really interesting one, but i particularly liked the ending" James was full blown grinning now, leaning closer with every word. "You know when the author proclaimed their love for me"

He was just inches away from her face now. She was having trouble functioning.

"And see, I happen to know the author" he was whispering. He smelt like a mix of pine, fresh grass, broomstick polish and that particular boy smell that teenage boys always had.

"So, Lily, what do you say" he finished, drawing away from her at the very last moment. as soon as his face got out of her way, Lily realized she was functioning again, but it wasn't Lily on the reins oh no.

"I say you should kiss the author you blithering fool" she heard herself say. and while the real Lily would never have said it she found herself agreeing.

James laughed. "Very well then"

And this time when he leaned in, he didn't stop of pull away.
