They say follow your gut. "Trust your instincts," they say. What they do not explain is how on earth to know when your gut is trying to guide you. Its voice is muffled, suppressed, and often unintelligible. Instincts can be difficult to hone. It takes time to train them so you can understand them clearly. Daichi was certainly no expert in following his gut... However, when he overheard Sugawara uttered something to Asahi, he heard that voice loud and clear.

"Hey, who's that guy talking to (Y/n)?"

His eyes, rich hickory, instantly scanned the gym stadium bleachers. He could pick you out in a crowd with ease, your features etched into his brain like the lyrics to his favorite song. Sure enough, you stood at the ledge looking over the court. You leaned casually on the railing with your arm extended across it. You were facing a young man Daichi did not recognize.

"I don't know, I've never seen him around before."

Daichi was not necessarily a jealous person. He knew you would never cheat on him and he trusted you with everything. That was not what worried him. What worried him was how the boy reached across the railing and placed his hand over yours.

"I'll be right back," Daichi told his teammates. Though they were just about to start a game, no one told him to stay back. His voice held a sternness that was foreign to them. The few of them that noticed the stranger's gross actions toward you prayed for his survival. The others said nothing, recognizing that voice as nothing to be questioned.

"Ya know... " The young man purred, giving you a look that made your stomach churn. "Someone as cute as you don't deserve to be here all by yourself." You opened your mouth to respond with a prompt piss off. But someone beat you to the punch.

"Well, good thing she's not." A strong hand landed on the stranger's shoulder. He turned around to see Daichi, wearing a forced smile. A wave of relief washed over you. You knew well that some men only listen to other men.

"Hi, I'm the boyfriend," Daichi extended his other arm to shake the stranger's hand, but he was refused. It was almost funny how swiftly the stranger clammed up. He tensed at the unwanted contact, or more accurately, tasting his own medicine. The stranger forced out an apology. His eyes fell to the ground and he walked away, shoulders slumped. You smiled.

"Thanks," You told your boyfriend playfully. You watched as he relaxed, his faux smile melting into a genuine one. He stepped closer to you and leaned down carefully. He pressed a chaste kiss to your lips.

"Just doin' my job, babe."
