Dedicated to Steph_Nora_J check out her book “Dawn's breaking” it's awesome.

Irene's POV

I walked into my father's office and scanned it with my eyes. Everything was still neatly arranged and It was still as clean as when my father used the office.

It was a day now since I lost my father and I was starting to miss his presence. I saw how the people loved and respected him despite his overbearing nature. They trusted him for their safety and protection. They looked up to him for valuable advice and he was the man after everyone's heart.

I want to be more than what my father was to them. I want them to trust me like they did to him, I want them to respect me and above all I want them to love me. I knew it wasn't going to be easy especially now that we have more people to control; the crescent pack.

I had called Caleb to come back to the pack. I was planning to bury father that night. It was going to be a very small ceremony. I didn't want to make noise so the other packs won't know about his demise especially Crescent pack.

“Irene”

I turned to where the voice came from. Caleb walked into the office and stretched his hands out to embrace me. I hugged him and for the first time since when my father died I felt emotional.

“How are you?” Caleb asked after releasing me from his tight and warm embrace.

“I'm fine” I replied.

“No, you don't look fine”  Caleb concluded. And then my eyes poured out the tears I had been fighting back.

“Shhhhh, there is no need to cry, he has gone to join his mate, your mother.  I'm sure he is happy where he is” Caleb whispered in my ear after taking me into another embrace.

No matter how I thought Caleb was annoying, he was still a good man and has been my father's best friend since childhood. I knew he was not taking the death of my father easy too but he still tried to console me in my distress.

He patted my back and released me from the hug.

“You didn't tell me what caused the death of your father.” Caleb asked as I walked to get myself seated.

“You should have heard what the people are saying” I questioned.

“Yes, I did but I don't believe it Irene. Tell me the truth”

I checked if the door was open because I didn't want anyone to hear what really killed my father.

“I locked the door. You can tell me” Caleb confirms.

I dropped myself into my father's chair and I sunk into the chair. Goodness!  I forgot the chair was not my size. Caleb laughed at me and I joined him too.

“I have to change this chair”  I gushed.

“Yeah, you sure need to.  I can't even see your face” Caleb noted.

I rolled my eyes at his comment and stood up from the chair.

“Niel killed him.” I said in a whisper after the fun of seeing me sink in my father's chair died down.

“What?” Caleb shouted standing up from the chair he sat on. “What do you mean Niel killed him?”

“Please Caleb, don't shout. I don't want anyone to know.” I begged.

“Okay, I won't. You told me something about Niel escaping. How?” Caleb said in a reduced tone.

“I don't know how he escaped. I went to the dungeon to see him and I found his cell empty.”

“What about the guards?  Where were they when he was leaving the dungeon?”

“I found them dead”

“He killed them?”

“Yeah, he did.” I answered.

Caleb walked around the office with his hand on his chin like he was deep in thought.

“You have to find him, Irene” He said.

“I know I have to find him but I have to settle things here before I start searching for him”

“No Irene, you have to look for him now. What if he comes back to his people”

“That's why I told you to increase the guards at the border. Right now, you have to monitor the steps of his beta. He might want to communicate with his beta.”

“Not only his beta,  his mother too and everyone in that pack. Their movements should be monitored. We can't afford a rebellion especially when they find out that a woman is now their Alpha”

“Yes,  that's true” I agreed

“You said he killed the Alpha”

“Yes, he did”

“So why is he not Alpha?  Why are you the Alpha now?” Caleb pondered

“That question too has been on my mind. I don't know why. I think the ritual affected something.  I have sent someone to get Ella. She needs to explain this”

“Nevertheless, we thank the Moon goddess for showering her blessings on our pack.” Caleb raised his eyes as he said

“Yeah,  I think she really loves this pack” I looked up too and smiled.“Father would be buried tonight.”

“You told me that.”

“Just a few people would be in attendance. I don't want a crowd” I added.

“No problem. I think that's better" Caleb agreed “When would you inform Crescent pack of the new developments?”

“I planned to do that immediately after Father's burial.” I answered

“That's good.”

I rested on my father's table and the office was quiet for a while. Someone knocked on the door breaking the silence.

“Who is that?” I asked.

“It's me, Ella”

“Oh, please come in” Ella walked in with her small frame. She was brown skinned and had a very curly dark hair, the lines on her face showed that she was getting old, though her brown eyeballs still shone like a youths own. Father said she came from a long line of witches in Africa.

“I heard the sad news Irene” Ella sympathized taking my hands and squeezing in a reassuring manner.

“It's alright Ella, he had to go someday”

“Yes, he had to” Ella said releasing my hands.“Why did you send for me?”

“Father would be buried tonight,  I want you to get the things for his burial prepared” I replied.

“That's no problem. I would get everything prepared” She said with a smile.

“And Ella, I have a question”

“What is it my dear child?”

“Father didn't die a natural death, he was killed Ella”

“I know my child”

“You know?” Caleb asked. I had forgotten that he was in the office.

“Yes I know he did not die a natural death” Ella answered facing Caleb “ I know the other Alpha killed him. I asked the spirits and they told me the cause of his death.”

“So why is the other Alpha not the new Alpha?  Why did the power go to me?”

“You were destined to rule my child. Your father is an Alpha, your mother was born of a wolf and a witch. When you were born, the moon goddess marked you as her own. That's why you have that moon mark on your right shoulder. That's why your father sent you to the convent to learn how to fight. That's why the power went to you. You have been chosen by the moon goddess to rule, to lead. It's in your destiny child.”

I had always thought the mark on my shoulder was because I was an Alpha's daughter. Now I know the truth. I know why my father sent me to the convent. I thought it was because he didn't love me. Now I know why I am the Alpha. I was chosen by the Moon goddess herself.
I'm the chosen one.

“Thanks Ella. I feel relieved now that I know the truth”

“You would be a great leader my child” Ella said patting my shoulder.“I'll have to leave now to get the things needed for the  rituals”

“Okay, Ella. Meet us at the river at midnight.” I said

“Okay, my child. Goodbye Irene,  Good bye Caleb”

“Good bye Ella”
“Good bye Ella”
Caleb and I said in unison.

Ella walked out of the office and silence filled the office again.

“Let me get things prepared for the burial too” Caleb spoke.

“Thank you Caleb”

“You are welcome dear” Caleb pulled me into another embrace and patted my back “Be strong”

“I would” I replied while pulling out from his grip.

He turned and left the office leaving me alone with my thoughts.
I slumped into my father's chair and this time I did not care if the chair swallowed me, I just wanted to rest.

I closed my eyes and the gentle hands of sleep carried me away.
