Kiss Me Kate
Is a musical
Based on one of Shakespeare's classic plays.

This one time
Speech team took a field trip
To see The Taming of the Shrew.

I loved it!
Although I hated it's sexist message.
Come on, Will!
Why you gotta ruin such a badass female character?

But I digress.
The show got me thinking.
Wasn't Kate in the play,
Sort of like the Kate sitting just two chairs away from me?

Both were powerful,
Confident woman.
Both weren't interested in a relationship.
Both had guys trailing after them.

How come when Kate in the play hissed at a guy,
She ended up marrying him?
When I hissed at a guy,
I was considered crazy.

Taming of The Shrew
Is the sort of play
Where, even if you don't agree with it,
Or you know you should hate it,
Or maybe you really want to hate it,
But you just can't.

The acting and the characters,
For the most part at least,
Are just too good to hate.
Sort of like Kate.

It's a play that people write musicals about.
Kiss Me, Kate.
Kate is the sort of person people write musicals about.
Kiss me, Kate.

But there's not musical about me.
There's no play about me either,
That might prompt a future musical.

But even if I don't agree with the message
Of Taming of The Shrew,
I can't hate it.
It's too good.

And even if Kate is just too perfect
In all I want to be perfect in,
I can't hate her.
She's too nice.

So instead I smile,
As I hear the people sing.
They aren't singing the song of angry men.
No, that's a different musical.
And sorry.
The reference was right there.
I had no choice.

But each and everyone one of them
Is singing,
Words I wonder if I'll ever hear,
My name in Kate's place.
Kiss Me, Kate.
