We drove into the night, in search of Ned's safe house...

"Are you sure you're reading that right?" I asked.

Fischer looked up from the map, but didn't look at me. "Yes."

I sighed and got out of the car. "You want anything?"

She didn't answer.

I took that as a sign and walked into the gas station.

"What can I do for you, miss?" The man behind the counter asked.

"Twenty on pump two and a pack of Marlboros."

I handed him the cash and walked out.

I leaned against the car and packed my cigarettes while it filled.

Just then, I noticed a sheriffs car pull into the gas station.

I shakily put a cigarette between my lips as the sheriff and deputy got out.

They glanced at me and I lowered my head.

I started to panic when the deputy turned to me. He started walking up and I tried to pull the pump out, but I was too late, he was already in front of me.

'Shit.' I thought as he looked me up and down.

I was mentally preparing myself for a fight... When he smiled. "Need a light?"

I let out a breath I didn't realize I was holding in before flashing him a quick smile. "Thank you."

He lit my cigarette and tipped his hat before walking into the gas station.

I quickly pulled the pump out and got in the passenger seat.

"Everything alright?" Fischer asked.

I looked at the gas station. "Yeah, let's get the hell outta here."

I watched Fischer put her pistol back in its holster as she stared down the gas station.

"Were you really gonna use that?" I asked.

"I guess we'll never know." She replied as she started the car and peeled out of the gas station.

After a long drive, we pulled into the driveway of Ned's safe house. It was in the middle of nowhere and looked abandoned, just like his house.

We parked behind the house and grabbed the duffel bag. I threw a tarp over the car while Fischer walked into the house.

I joined her in the doorway. We looked around the small space. A dusty, old couch and coffee table sat in the living room and a table and chairs in the kitchen, that was about it though.

"He really should've hired a maid." I said.

Fischer brushed past me and started unpacking the bag at the kitchen table.

I sighed before joining her. "Sorry."

She just shook her head. "Look, just gimme a few minutes, ok?"

I nodded and walked away, deciding to inspect the rest of the house. There was a bathroom upstairs and a bedroom with one bed.

'Great.' I thought as I sat on the edge of the bed.

I put my head in my hands, memories of that night flooding back.

'I really wish you were here right now.' I looked up. "I'm scared, Frank."

I heard a creak from the doorway. I looked over and saw Fischer standing there.

I wiped my eyes and stood up.

"Sorry, you can have the bed." I said as I tried to walk past her.

She grabbed my arm. "Audrey..."

I exhaled. "I'll be ok."

I tried to give her a smile, but I don't think she bought it. "We should get some rest."

She nodded and I walked back downstairs.

"Couch it is." I said to myself as I tried to get comfortable on the old couch.

Sleep took me surprisingly quick...

I woke up early the next morning, before Fischer. I walked into the kitchen and checked the fridge. To my amazement, it was packed.

I decided to make breakfast.

Halfway through making it, Fischer walked in. "Bacon?"

I nodded. "Yep, found it in the fridge."

She nodded and took a seat at the table, pulling out the laptop we got from Ned.

"Any news?" I asked.

"Same old, same old. We're the most wanted fugitives in America." She replied with a bitter laugh.

I finished making breakfast in silence and set two plates when it was done.

I joined her at the table. "So, what's the plan?"

"Lay low."

"That's it? We're not going after that 'Wells' guy?"

"And do what? He's the goddamn police captain. Without any evidence, there's nothing we can do... it's his word over ours."

I dropped my fork and stood up.

"Where are you going?"

"I need a smoke." I replied before walking outside and hopping in the car.

I pressed the cigarette lighter and waited for it to heat up.

Fischer's words played through my head and it only pissed me off more. I crumpled the cigarette in my hand and threw it before getting out of the car and pacing around.

'There has to be something we can do... there's no way in hell he's getting away with what he did.' Then, it hit me.

I jogged back inside.

"That was quick." Fischer said.

I sat down next to her. "The money."

She looked at me, slightly confused.

I rolled my eyes. "You said my brother took a few thousand in drug money, but why would they do all this for a measly few thousand?"

Fischer's eyes widened. "There has to be more. And if we can find the rest."

"We might be able to prove our innocence."

She smiled at me. "You're brilliant."

I smiled back. "Wow, a compliment? That's new."

She shook her head and stood up. "How do we find the money though?"

"They must have it locked up somewhere. If we can figure out where, we can take them down."

Fischer paced around the room, seemingly deep in thought. Then, she snapped her fingers. "I got it." She said before sitting back down and pulling up the laptop.

I watched as she typed away. 'Damn, I wish she would get like this more often.'

She finally stopped and turned the laptop to me.

"There." She said, pointing at the screen.

The screen showed a satellite view of an old cabin in the middle of the woods. "What's that?"

"Wells' hunting cabin, he let us use it to hide a witness a few years back. If the money's anywhere, it's there."

New found determination washed over me. "Well, what're we waiting for?"

She shut the laptop. "We can't just go in guns blazing, we have to lay low for a while and come up with a plan that won't get us killed."

I nodded. "Fair enough, let's get to work then..."
