SUMMARY:

Mai Mako was dead. Her heart was beating, her blood pumping through her veins but ever since that day, she was dead. The damage of the accident had been so mad, half her body wasn't even hers anymore. She had been remade, turned into a cyborg to save her life. She wished she could have just died in the fire of the collapsing ship. She wished the flames had consumed her and burned her life away. Instead, she was forced to open her eyes every morning and continue living an endless cycle of stealing, murdering and plundering.

Peter Quill was alive. The galaxy was his for the taking, finally free from the shackles binding him down for so long. But no matter which corner he ran to, that day would always haunt him. He remembered the accident like it was only yesterday. He could still feel the gravity pulling him to the ground as he jumped, while leaving her behind. He could still feel his heart crawling around in his chest like a wild animal, trying to get back to her. He left her behind and Mai had never been the forgiving type to begin with. All he could do was hope he would never see her again.

But, as he so often liked to say, karma is a bitch.

"You really gonna make me say it, aren't you? Alright, I'm sorry."

"Do you have a type, Star Lame?"

"Uh yeah, women I'm slightly afraid of."

"Mmm, less lame than I thought."

NOTES:

- Mai was born on Xandar but was taken as a child by Yondu and his crew, which is how she met Peter. She's very good at stealing and lying but she doesn't like doing it. But she has fun with Peter and likes going on "missions" with him more than she likes to admit. The two of them make a very good team and so Yondu often sends them out together.

- One day though the mission goes horribly wrong and they are getting chased by the Nova Corps. For a while they manage to stay ahead. Until they fire a rocket and blow up their ship. Peter escapes at the very last moment but Mai isn't so lucky and is still aboard when the ship explodes. When trying to escape, she got stuck beneath the debris of the ship and Peter made the choice to save himself.

- After that day Peter walks away from Yondu, not wanting to be reminded of Mai. And so he doesn't know that Yondu found her in the wreckage, barely alive. Her arm, leg and spine have to be replaced with robot parts to keep her alive, much like Nebula. Though Yondu truly believes this is the right thing to do. He's saving her life after all. But when Mai finally wakes up, she isn't all too happy about it. And when she finds out Peter escaped, alive, she's out for revenge.

- She continues working for Yondu because she has to pay off the parts he used to safe her. Though she never gives up the search for Peter, planning on killing him once she finds him. She first sees him again in Guardians Volume 1 when he's brought aboard Yondu's ship. It's not a happy reunion but she's stopped from actually killing him by Yondu, much to her dismay.

- So this story is very much an enemies to lovers plot! Eventually Peter and she will get closer and fall in love but it will take a lot of mending their relationship. So don't make them get together too fast. Especially because Mai isn't one to forgive and forget. I thought it would be funny to have Mai call him Star Lame as nickname. You can write her all the way to Endgame if you like. That's totally up to you!
