Lisa's P.O.V.

Brenda and I stumbled into a small shed. My eyes slightly widened as I noticed the shed was filled with all kinds of equipment. Shovels, rope, buckets and even a few tiny bags that seemed to contain seeds. Gladers were walking in and out, carrying the stuff outside. And when Frypan took the last box away, silence filled the little shed and for a second that seemed to last forever, all I could hear was my own breathing. My eyes landed on Minho who stood in the dooropening with Dawn's lifeless body still in his arms.

I turned around, frowning at the silver screen as I watched Thomas stumble through. He was alone but Teresa had been with him. Then his eyes landed on Dawn and he abruptly stopped walking.

'Teresa?' Brenda whispered.

Thomas gave a slight shake of his head and whispered Dawn's name in return. This time it was my turn to shake my head. And even though I had never seen eye to eye with Teresa it still stung to lose her. Once I wished her dead, but we'd lost enough people and now her death was hurting me.

Brenda took a sharp breath before walking towards the control panel on the side of the Flat Trans. She started pushing a few buttons and I knew immediately what she was up to, she was going to destroy the Flat Trans.

'You three get out,' she said with urgency in her voice. 'I have to do one last thing.'

'My shuck brain can't spend one more second thinking. Just let her do whatever she wants,' Minho said to Thomas who was staring numbly ahead of him.

My feet carried me forwards and I placed my hand on his shoulder. He shivered, his eyes slowly turning to me. 'Come on,' I whispered.

The first thing I noticed once I stepped outside of the shed was the smell of something salt and the sound of waves hitting the shore. Frowning I turned to my left and a small gasp left my lips. On my left stretched out an ocean, disappearing into the horizon, as far as I could see. The waves were calmly hitting the shore, creating a peaceful sound that somehow calmed my aching heart.

We stood at the top of a hill above a field of tall grass and flowers. To our right the hill descended into a valley of trees that seemed to stretch out just as far as the sea, ending in a wall of mountains that stood proudly against the clear blue sky. Not the same brown, dry mountains we'd seen in the Scorch. These were breathtaking, grey mountains with snow at their tops.

I hadn't even dared to dream places like these still excisted.

All the people we'd rescued were walking around, jumping and cheering in happiness. While most of the Gladers were standing a few feet away from us, as if waiting for Thomas to tell them what to do.

Next to me I heard Minho let out a low whistle as he looked around but as my eyes fell on him I noticed he looked tired. His trademark smirk was gone.

The sound of a door closing made me turn around. Brenda came walking out of the shed just as flames started eating away the wood. 'Just making sure?' Thomas asked.

She nodded. 'Just making sure.'

A soft nudge against my shoulder made me turn to look at Minho and he nodded towards my sisters body that he was still holding in his arms. I offered him a small smile, walking towards the pile of equipment from the shed and taking two shovels, before sending the others a look and walking after him towards the tree line.

We found a spot under a tall tree and there he placed her down. I handed him a shovel and we started digging. The ground was hard and it took at least an hour before we managed to make a decent hole but I didn't mind the hard work. It was enough to take my mind off of things.

Finally we placed her down into the ground and I took a shaky breath as I watched lying there like that. Her skin pale, her hair folded around her face and her eyes closed. I had cleared the blood of her chin and if her shirt hadn't been soaked in it she could've been asleep.

Taking a deep breath I put some dirt on my shovel and threw it into the grave. It landed on her legs and so we started covering her back up until the ground was even again and the grave closed. Minho placed his shovel on the ground and walked away, only to return with a handful of flowers that were growing in the field.

A tear escaped my eye as he placed them on the grave before walking back to me, taking me into his arms. I cried into his chest, big ugly tears, until my throat was raw and my sobs had turned into painful hiccups.

'Let's go,' he whispered, taking my hand and leading me away from the grave.

Throwing one last look over my shoulder I felt a small smile appear on my lips. 'Goodnight Dawn,' I mumbled. Turning my gaze back forwards I saw how the Gladers had built several fires and how the Immunes had gathered around them.

Minho took me to the closest fire where Frypan, Thomas, Brenda, Sonya and all the others were seated. We joined them, immediately plates with fresh fruits were pushed into our hands by a smiling Frypan.

Laughs and chatter filled my ears as I ate from the delicious food, my eyes staring at the beach and the sea a few feet away from us.

'This will be a good home for us,' Minho said, taking my attention.

Nodding at him I offered him a small smile. 'Yeah, it will.'

'Can I have your attention please,' a voice called out over the beach. Slowly the chatter died down and I turned to see Carter had climbed on a rock that was lying in the sand, towering out above us as he seemed to be ready to give some sort of speech. He always loved to do that, even on something as simple as birthdays.

'We've come a long way together,' he began, smiling at all of us. 'So many have sacrificed so much to make this place possible.' He fell silent and took a deep breath. 'Your friends and your family. So here's to the ones who couldn't be here. Here's to the friends we've lost.'

I reached out and took Minho's hand firmly in my own, not ever wanting to let go.

'This place is for you. It's for all of of us but this,' and he pointed down to the rock he was standing on. 'This is for them.' Then he raised the knife he was holding in his hand and my breath caught in my throat when I realised what he was getting at. I told him about the Gladers carving their names on the wall before I'd gone into the Maze myself. And now he was paying honor to that tradition.

'So, in your time, in your own way, come make your pace,' he said and then raised his arms in the air before yelling. 'And welcome to the Safe Haven!'

Cheers came from all the Immunes, shouts and applause as he climbed down from the rock, placing his knife on it and walking towards the fire.

I offered him a small smile. 'You always had a certain flare for drama didn't you?'

A chuckle left his lips. 'Oh yes.'

My eyes wondered towards the rock and then I let go of Minho's hand and walked over to it. Taking the knife I took a deep breath and started carving out her name, my sisters name. She deserved to be here, just as much as the rest of us. And I was comforted by the fact that if there was such a thing as heaven, that's where'd she be.

I am so sorry for not updating sunday, guys! I just had such a busy day and I was completely exhausted so I kinda forgot about the update.

But here it is anyway and it kind of hurts to write this. Hearts is almost finished and with that comes an end to my maze runner series and it makes me unnecessarily sad.

I put in Vince his speech from the movie because I absolutely loved it and it makes me so emotional. But since Vince is an asshole in the book and never reached the Safe Haven I thought I'd let Carter say it. First I wanted it to be Thomas but that's not really his thing so the honor went to Carter.

In my first version of Dreams the name carving thing wasn't included but since I've been rewriting the books I decided to put it in anyway. If you want to read it, you can find it in chapter 4.

Anyway, let me know your thoughts in the comments and leave a vote! And I will see you all sunday for the very last chapter of The Chronicles of Memoriam.

Hugs,

xXx
