Chapter 7

Shaw

I couldn't stop pacing the small perimeter of the cell. I wasn't worried about what was going to happen to me. In fact, I'd rather the punishment come to me than the other person.

The only problem was how Lawrence and Tara were going to react to me 'killing' Cassidy. They hated me a lot already because they only thought I was going to drag Holden down with me. It didn't matter if Cassidy was a murderer herself. They would only see it as me resorting to violence and going to my past ways.

The door to my holding cell opened and I looked over to see a security guard standing there. "You have some visitors," he said.

I nodded and he led me out of the cell and to a room where I saw two people I really didn't want to see.

       Lawrence and Holden.

Of course, I did want to see my boyfriend because I was going to be here for a long time, but I didn't know how he was going to react to me being in here.

The security guard waited outside of the room as I walked in, sitting across from Lawrence and Holden as I awaited the backlash I was going to receive. I had a feeling Holden only came with Lawrence just so Lawrence wouldn't strangle me.

"Shaw, what the hell were you thinking killing someone?" Lawrence asked and I could tell he was trying his hardest not to completely lose it. "It doesn't matter what she did. Her punishment was up to the police and courts only, not you."

"Well, maybe if you knew the whole story first, you wouldn't be getting angry with me," I said, leaning back in the chair and crossing my arms.

"What happened?" Holden asked. "You... you didn't actually kill her. Did you?"

I really hated lying to my boyfriend, but it was for the best.

       "I can explain," I said.

"So... you did?" Holden asked. "How could you, Shaw? Trust me, I hated Cassidy but I wouldn't want you killing her!"

"Holden, just listen," I said. "It was self-defense, alright? It was either me or her and in the moment, I didn't even mean to kill her. I just wanted to get away."

       "What happened?" Holden asked.

"She had a gun," I said. "And she was going to use it. She thought instead of going for Josh's brothers and cousin, she would go for one of his brother's boyfriend. She wanted you to experience the heartbreak she felt when Josh chose Cleo over her."

"So she was going to kill you?" Holden asked.

"Yeah," I said. "There was a brick beside me when she had the gun pointed at me. I only meant to knock her out but... I used too much force. And I figured if I just confessed to the police right away, I might get a lesser sentence."

"What's going to happen now?" Holden asked.

"Well, I'll have to go to prison while I await my trial," I said. "And then my sentence will depend on the trial. If I can prove that I couldn't have done anything else to fight off Cassidy, then there's a chance that I can get out of it with no charge. If not..."

       "Then what?" Holden asked.

"Josh already got me a lawyer," I said. "Brody, the lawyer, already talked to me about it and he said the worst case scenario is I go to jail for three years."

"Three years?!" Holden asked. "That's not fair! She tried killing you!"

"I know," I said. "But that's the worst case scenario. Brody said it's quite likely that I can get off, especially because Cassidy has already killed one person and attempted to kill another by either shooting or blowing up the city hall. If we could prove that I had no other choice, then I can get off."

"What if you don't?" Holden asked. "What if the judges don't see it that way? What if..."

"Hey," I said, reaching over the table and holding Holden's hands. "It will be okay. Like I said, that's the worst case scenario. Brody said that right now, things look to be in my favour especially since I did bring myself in and confessed almost right away. I showed remorse and I had no intent to actually kill Cassidy. You don't have anything to worry about. I'll be okay."

"You'll still have to be in prison until your hearing," Holden said. "And we don't even know when the hearing will be."

"I know," I said. "Brody is going to do everything he can to make sure I get off." I then looked over at Lawrence. "You must hate me a lot more."

Lawrence sighed. "I don't, believe it or not. I'm not happy that you killed someone and I'm still not happy you're dating my son but... Holden came to me in such distress when he found out you were arrested. If he actually lost you... I don't know if I'll ever be okay with the idea of you two dating, but I'm going to have to try for the sake of my son."

       I smiled slightly. "Thank you."

It was such a shame that he only saw it that way under such circumstances. If I didn't take the fall, he would probably think the same of me.

He would probably go back to hating me if he ever found out I was covering for someone.

The door opened and the guard walked in. "Time's up," he said.

       "Shaw..." Holden said.

"I'll be okay," I said as I stood up. "I promise. Just take care of yourself and try your hardest not to focus on me."

"I can't do that," Holden said, standing up as well. "I love you too much."

I gave Holden a kiss before the guard starting pulling me away. "I love you," I said. "And I'm sorry."
