"We get to hunt! Really?" Cedarpaw jumped around like she was a kit.
"Yes, get ready. You can eat after this lesson." Said Echostream. "Don't be disappointed if you don't catch anything. Apprentices don't usually catch something on their first day hunting."
"She'll do just fine Echostream," Cedarpaw's father approached them. "I remember when she was a kit. Cedarpaw could pounce just like a warrior." Cedarpaw smiled at Leaffall's praise.
"Thank you Leaffall," she smiled. He gave them a nod, then walked away.
"Let's go then Cedarpaw." Echostream padded to the camp entrance. "We are going near the river to hunt. I'm going to show you how to catch fish and if we have have time, a mouse if we see one." Cedarpaw nodded, trying to keep up with her mentor's long strides.
"Remember here?" Asked the white warrior.
"I think so. We're close to ShadowClan territory, right?" Replied Cedarpaw uncertainly.
"That's right!" Praised Echostream. "So, to catch a fish, make sure your shadow doesn't fall over the stream. If it does, the fish will see it and swim away."
"Wait," interrupted Cedarpaw. "Fish know if were we are?"
"They are living creatures, so of course they can think for themselves. Now listen. You have to be ready for the fish. When you see one swim past you, quickly reach into the stream and grab it. Plop it on the ground and kill it with your claws unsheathed. Watch."
Cedarpaw saw her mentor sit down at the edge of the water. Her paw on the ground, ready to strike. Cedarpaw saw a shadow wiggling through the water. Without a chance for it to move, Echostream's paw shot into the water. She dropped her catch onto the soft earth.
"You try it now," Said Echostream.
"Ok." Cedarpaw crouched down beside the river.
"Keep your shadow away," reminded her mentor. Cedarpaw shifted her position. She saw movement in the water. She reached out her unsheathed claws at the figure. The apprentice felt something heavy and wet in between her claws. She pulled it out and looked at it surprised.
"It's huge!" Echostream's eyes grew big. "That's going to feed half the clan! Bury under the dirt."
"Can we catch a mouse too?" Asked Cedarpaw excitedly. She hadn't expected to catch anything at all.
"Might as well. No harm done if we don't." Shrugged the white warrior. " Lets go closer to ShadowClan territory. Now, let me see you pounce."
Cedarpaw wiggled her haunches and lifted her tail. She leaned back onto her hind legs. Then she pounced. It felt as though time had stopped  and was suspended in the air for a moment. She felt the wind against her pelt and the rocks underneath her paws.
"Your father was right, you hunt like a senior warrior!" Cedarpaw's mentor grinned."Can you smell anything?"
"Is that a mouse?" Asked the brown apprentice. Echostream nodded, her tail flicked towards the direction of the scent. Cedarpaw got the hint and started moving carefully towards the prey. She saw movement in the grass. Right when she was about to pounce, an unfamiliar voice came from up ahead.
"Stop, thats ShadowClan prey!" A large white and grey she-cat and a smaller tortoiseshell one were running towards them.
"That's Morningthunder and her apprentice Marigoldpaw. They're nothing to be afraid of," Whispered Echostream into Cedarpaw's ear. Cedarpaw raised her head at the ShadowClan cats.
"You have no right to hunt here," Said Echostream. "This is Riverclan territory."
"We'll see at the Gathering tomorrow," responded Morningthunder before she walked away. Her apprentice followed her.
"What was that about?" Wondered Cedarpaw aloud.
"I don't know responded Echostream quickly.
Why is she lying?
