Now, to be honest, most of the famous Nigerian books I have seen are teen fictions. There was a time that writing a teen love story in a Nigerian secondary school was in the head of most Nigerian writers here on Wattpad.

I won't lie, I wanted to write one too, because it got more attention than other books. I was tempted and I even started writing one based on my high school experience and it got attention, but then I unpublished it. The reason? I didn't see where the story was going.

I don't read Nigerian Teen Fictions, especially if they are highschool based, I mean I am writing one in my draft at the moment, but trust me when I stay, it's going to be different or not, whatever, let's get back to my rant. There is only one highschool story based in Nigeria that I am reading which I really like, the rest, I haven't gotten past the first three pages.

It's just the cliche things I see in most of them that irritates me. I remember reading a book a friend of mine wrote. I read it even though I didn't enjoy it.

Q: Why did I read it?
A: Because she's my friend and it's my job to support her.

Q: Why didn't I enjoy it?
A: Because it just wasn't... Urrgh!

Why does the main male lead always have to be rich? I want to see a Nigerian highschool story with a poor main male lead.

Why does he also have to be a player? Or the most wanted boy in school? [Before oversabi come and say "Not all books are like this", I never said they were all like this. I am ranting, free me abeg.]

Why can't the male main lead just be a poor church boy?

Coming to the girl, Urrgh! For some strange reason, I have never liked the female lead in any Nigerian highschool books I have read.

Q: Why don't you like them?
A: Because most of them are dumb and annoying, periodt.

Q: Is there another reason?
A: WHY DO THE HOT GUYS HAVE TO END UP WITH THEM?!! WHAT'S SO SPECIAL ABOUT THEM?

There is just something about them, I can't find a word to express it, at a point I will be like

"What is doing this one? Aunty shut up! Shut your fictional mouth up, zip it!"

*Takes deep breath*

I feel like I am going too fast, let me drink water and come back first.

Q: Did you actually drink water?
A: No.

The thing is, most of the books have lots of similar scenes and stories. Here is an example of one I know most people like using in boarding school stories.

The pant{underwear} of someone gets missing.

And you see scenes like,

"Who thief my pant oo, I said who thief my pant!"

When I first saw this, I had to admit, it was really funny, it made me laugh. But then when other authors kept using this particular line, it's nothing new, I just scroll pass it.

There are many other familiar scenes that I see that I just got really really tired of seeing and let me not even enter into the romance, romance?

*Let me laugh small first*

Q: Did you actually laugh?
A: No.

It's never realistic! Urrgh! 😖 People why do this? Eh? Why do you do this na?

Didn't you attend Secondary school? Since you experienced this, I at least expect to see you show this in your book. We are talking about naija boys oo, I don't know about you, but the boys in my school were more interested in bet naija, Yahoo and pressing girls breast, only few has sense.

It's never too serious like they make it seem in this books, once highschool ends, relationship ends also, and it's only in rare cases that the relationship continues after that. College relationships are much more stable than Secondary school, because in college most people eyes open and they start having sense, but most of the times, people don't even have time to date because of school works.

There was a book I read, I think the author has taken it down now. It was based in Nigeria, and here was what I noticed in her books.

First of all, it reminds me of my writing when I was ten. Then I use to buy 20 leaves notebook and make these little comic book. Oh, you should have read it, the drawings and whole story was a mess, but for a ten years old, it was pretty good.

It was like I was reading a Barbie story based in Nigeria, the setting was in Nigeria, but everything else was just Barbie.

I am not saying, the boys in the book can't be rich because I know there are really big schools out there and there are actually rich boys. But you don't have to follow the same line, what makes your highschool story different from the other?
