"He's just terrifying!"

Berlin Waters hopped up the steps of the North Tower alongside Sebastion Capone and Aiden Williams, currently rambling on about the new Defense Against the Dark Arts professor.

"I mean... his scars, his crazy eye thing, it's just-" The hufflepuff boy shuddered at the thought of Mad-Eye Moody; there was no way he was going to survive his class.

Sebastian laughed a bit at his comment and shook his head. "He can't be that bad - even if he looks a little..." He paused and tried to find the right word to describe the man. "Odd."

"I think that's an understatement." Aiden returned, a small smile etched across his face.

The hufflepuff trio continued walking until they reached Classroom 3C on the third floor of the North Tower. Sebastian opened the door and hesitantly walked inside, confidently keeping his focus straight ahead of him; avoiding eye contact with Professor Moody.

Aiden began to follow his friend before stopping and noticing how Berlin wasn't close behind. He turned his head around to look behind him only to find Berlin standing completely still about ten feet away.

Aiden raised an eyebrow at the frozen hufflepuff boy. "Are you coming?"

Berlin shook his head quite fast and replied with, "No." he peeked into the classroom for a moment and let out a breath. "He's too scary." He practically whispered these words, obviously still intimidated by his new professor; Berlin was not ready to interact with the man.

Aiden smiled in enjoyment; finding his friend quite amusing at the moment. "So, you're not going to class because of Moody?" He raised his eyebrows as the smile on his face widened a bit.

Berlin nodded his head and spun on his heel, and began to walk away.

Before he was able to go far, Aiden ran over to the frightened boy and grabbed the back of his robes, dragging him back towards the classroom.

"Stop it! I'm not going in there!" Berlin protested; trying to free himself so he wouldn't have to go to class - but he was miserably failing. Aiden quietly laughed to himself as he continued to bring the boy into the classroom. As they reached the doorway, Aiden opened the door; letting go of Berlins robe as they both stepped foot in the room.

Berlin fell backwards onto the floor the second Aiden let go - much to the clumsy boys embarrassment. Aiden felt the second-hand embarrassment for Berlin, but couldn't help continuing to smile (although he tried his best to hide it).

Professor Moody abruptly stopped writing his name on the chalkboard and averted his attention to the Hufflepuff boy on the ground. He stared at Berlin with his eyebrows slightly furrowed and looked at him as if he was a strange bug that needed to be squashed. The two maintained eye contact for a few awkward moments - although it felt like minutes. Berlin was frozen in shock as he stared back at the professor; unsure of what to do.

"Get up." Moody said bluntly. Berlin immediately hopped to his feet and brushed off his robes. He walked - relativelyย  quickly - towards the back of the classroom and took a seat right next to Erik Harrison. Erik was currently trying very hard to contain his laughter. The hufflepuff took notice of Eriks enjoyment and elbowed him, signaling him to cut it out.

"Now that we're free of any distractions..." Moody stated, clearly eyeing Berlin as he said this. The poor hufflepuff can already tell that he was going to be that student this year... The professor continued: "Alastor Moody." He pointed to the chalkboard where his name was scribbled in large white letters.

"Ex-auror, Ministry Malcontent, and-" Before the man could continue his introduction, the door to the classroom opened. In walked Anastasia Lost; her blonde hair was up in a messy bun and there were slight dark circles under her eyes that were hardly noticeable, but indeed still there. She trudged over to the only empty seat; it was towards the front next to Alden Wrayburn who just looked her up and down wondering what the heck happened to her?

"You're late." Mad-eye said to the Slytherin girl in a rather harsh and rushed tone; incredibly annoyed at how
Anastasia interrupted him.

She stared at the professor with a deadpan expression. "Oh no. It's the end if the world." She rolled her eyes; literally not giving a care in the world about her tardiness or her disrespect. "A girls gotta sleep, you know?" She does have a point, though. The class was first thing in the morning and she stayed up way too late last night. Anastasia put her feet up on the desk as she leaned back on her chair - much to her classmates amusement.

"You better cut that out, Ms Lost, before you land yourself in detention." The man grumbled - yet almost growled - not wanting to deal with the girl at the moment.

Anastasia scoffed and took her feet off the desk; slouching and resting her head on her fist.

"As I was saying," You could hear the extreme irritation in his voice as he spoke. "I am your new Defense Against the Dark Arts Professor." He turned around to finish writing his titles on the chalkboard - his back towards the students.

"No Shit." Anastasia whispered to herself - only making the remark audible to the few students around her.

"DETENTION!" Mad-Eye was not having it with this girl. He refused to turn back around until he was finished writing on the chalkboard; he wanted to let the students know he can hear everything and he doesn't need to be facing them to hear it. The student immediately took the hint and took this moment to learn not to act up in this class.

"I'm here because Dumbledore asked me. End of story, goodbye, the end." He scanned the room before asking, "Any questions?"

Nobody said a word; of course they had questions, but they were far too nervous to what Moody's reaction would be.

Anastasia smirked a bit and started to raise her hand. Moody glowered at her, signaling that she better put her hand down before she lands herself another detention - or something worse. She took note of this and bitterly put her hand down; she was upset that she didn't get to ask her question - she believed the entire class would've found it entertaining.

"No questions? Good." The professor rushed over to behind his desk and took his wand out from the desk drawer. He paused for a moment and pulled something out from the inside pocket of his coat. The students watched him closely as he took a sip from a little flask that he had; nobody knew what it was, but they didn't dare to ask or even talk about it to their seat partner, knowing Moody would hear it.

"Which of you can tell me how many unforgivable curses there are?"

"3, sir." Hermione Granger answered hesitantly.

Moody turned to the chalkboard and began messily scribbling down words with the small stick of white chalk. "And they are so named?"

"Because they are unforgivable." Alden Wrayburn spoke up in an obvious tone; she didn't see why the question was necessary, I mean, they are called the unforgivable curses for a reason.

Hermione shot the ravenclaw an irritated look for interrupting her and continued to answer the professor. "Any one of them can-"

"Give you a one way ticket to Azkaban." Mad-Eye finished her thought, earning a small huff from Hermione who was clearly aggravated at the previous interruptions. "Now, the ministry says you're all too young to see what these curses do. I say different!"

Alaska Jones widened her eyes a tad and cocked her head to the side; she had a feeling she knew where this was going but she didn't want to believe it.

"You need to know what you're up against and you need to be prepared!" The professor practically yelled this to the students, getting all heated for no reason at all. The students just sat there with their attention directed fully towards Mad-Eye; some were scared out of their wits while some were oddly intrigued, such as River Crouch.

River has never had a teacher like this before; no professor has ever brought up these curses or act the way he does. She was highly interested in what today's lesson would be like, considering Moody couldn't possibly demonstrate these curses- would he?

"So, which curse shall we see first?"

Rivers raised an eyebrow at the word "see". Was he actually about to conjure the curses? She was now fully invested in this class and took in every word he said.

"Travers!" Moody shouted, calling upon Melody Travers who was currently sitting in the back of the classroom picking at her cuticles. She snapped her gaze up to the teacher and put her hands in her lap.

"What?" She answered him in a rushed tone with bug eyes and awaited for the professor to go on.

"Stand." She did as she was told; her eyes furrowed together, pondering why this was required. She felt eyes on her - and honestly didn't mind the attention - but she didn't acknowledge anyone. "Give us a curse." Moody instructed.

"Oh, um," She paused - not because she didn't know one; she's incredibly bright - but because she was trying to think of the most decent out of the three curses. "The imperius curse." She said falteringly; unsure of what her answer could lead to.

"Oh, I know about that one. My father told me about it one day because of h-" Taylor West began - basically thinking out loud - before the platinum blonde boy sitting beside her elbowed her to shut her up; knowing if she continued to talk that she would expose something that was supposed to stay between their families. She inhaled sharply as she realized what she was doing; that discussion about the curse was not supposed to be shared. Her fathers decision to share his experience under the curse was indeed supposed to stay between her, Draco, and Blaise - not Theo, though, because he would have freaked.

"Yes, Ms West, You're father would know all about it..."
The Professor replied to the Slytherin girl who shifted uncomfortably at his words, unsure of how he was aware of this information. "It gave the ministry a bit of grief a few years ago... perhaps this would show you why." He stomped over to his desk and lifted a lid on a large jar that sat on his desk. As he did this, many students began to catch on to what the man was about to do.

Alaska bit her bottom lip and widened her eyes as a knot in her stomach formed. She couldn't believe he was about to demonstrate the Imperius curse and she definitely wasn't ready for it either.

However, a small surprised smile out of curiosity made its way into River's face; she was captivated - and relatively surprised - by Moody's tactics.

The professor reached his hand into the large jar and allowed the spider to crawl onto it. Once it was on his arm, Moody took his hand out of the jar and placed the lid back on - walking away from table and returning to his previous front and center spot. He held out his arm to display the spider to the class - which Ron was not too pleased about - and pointed his wand at the creature.

"Engorgio."ย  The spider grew at an instant; nearly doubling in size. A few people shuddered at the sight of this - which Moody definitely noticed.

"Imperio."ย  Mad-Eye pointed his wand slightly upwards, lifting the spider in mid-air. Students closest to the professor (specifically Ellie Evans) shifted away from the spider; not wanting to be near the creature or have anything to do with it. But of course, Moody did have complete control over the spider and was all for disturbing the students.

Moody took notice of Ellie's discomfort and flung the spider onto her desk. The Gryffindor girl scooted her chair backwards until she couldn't move back anymore; her eyes were glued to the spider, anticipating any sudden movements.

Moody grinned and launched the spider directly at her, resulting in Ellie jumping out of her seat and sprinting towards to the very back of the room where she hid behind Melody. ("GET IT AWAY FROM ME !")

Majority of the class burst into laughter, but Moody specifically noticed Taylor West snickering at Ellie's antics. "What are you laughing at?" With his grin growing wider by the minute, the professor flicked his wand towards the brunette and landed the spider right onto her shared desk, gradually bringing it closer to her.

Taylor reflexively gripped Dracos arm as she inched away from the spider. Moody finally flung the creature onto the girls shoulder - chortling to himself. Taylor freaked and let out a shrill scream before knocking both herself and Draco out of their chairs and onto the floor (ending up with them both in an awkward position-)

Blaise and Theo sat at the desk next to them, hysterically laughing at Taylor's reaction and their two friends current positions. Mad-Eye then sent the spider right towards the boys, placing it right on top of Theo's head.

A high pitch scream escaped from Theo's mouth - It was practically as shrilling as Taylor's was - as he sat there unable to move. "Get it off. Get it off. Get it off. GET IT OFF!" He shouted to Blaise; desperate for help. Blaise just stared at the the spider with widened eyes - not helping his friend at all.

Alden watched the Slytherin boy's reaction in amusement, smirking slightly; she knew that she better not bust into laughter - however hard it might be - unless she wanted to draw attention to herself and have the spider sent her way. But in spite that, she couldn't help it but let out a few giggles - a noise you'll rarely hear from the Ravenclaw.

Moody seemed to have had enough with torturing the boys - although he was highly entertained by it - he sent the spider to the next person: Alaska Jones.

The spider landed right in front of the Gryffindor and began to inch towards her. "Good spider, gooood spider..." Alaska said to the creature timidly, hoping that it would do her some good. Her positive words, however, did not work and Moody flung the giant spider right onto her arm. She let out a very loud shriek as she swatted at the creature. "HELP! I DON'T WANT IT ON ME!"

Moody continued to move the insect around the classroom, resulting in the entire class of fifth and fourth year students dying of laughter (except a few like Berlin who hid under their desk clutching the desk legs for dear life). The previous tension in the classroom had been relieved and it was actually quite the enjoyable few minutes - I mean, even Moody was laughing and *seemed* to be having a great time.

"Talented isn't she? What shall I have her do next?" The professor said, forcing the spider to levitate in mid air. "Drown herself?" The classroom hushed at his words. He flew the spider over to a bucket of water and hovered the creature over it, slowly moving it closer to the surface of the water. The creature struggled to keep itself above the surface; wriggling and trying its best to stop itself. Moody, though, stopped his actions and brought the spider back up, placing it onto his hand.

Mad-Eye examined the classroom and saw the tense and frightened looks on the students faces. He certainly killed the vibe and brought the tension back, much to everyone else's distaste - even if they were glad the spider was no longer moving about the classroom.ย

"Lots of witches and wizards have claimed that they only did you-know-who's bidding under the influence of the imperius curse."

"How do they know which ones are lying and who's telling the truth?" Arthur Locke questioned out of curiosity.

"That, Mr Locke, Is a very good question." Moody responded, leaving Arthur a bit unsatisfied; the man's response did not answer his question and only left Arthur wanting to know more. The professor didn't exactly seem to know the answer either, though, which only Arthur seemed to have noticed.

"Another, another." Mad-Eye said, changing the subject. A few people raised their hands hesitantly, but he seemed to be somewhat delighted - and proud ? - about one of those particular students; yet the smug expression was hardly noticeable to anyone.

"Ah, Ms River Crouch, is it?" He said, pointing the the brunette slytherin girl with her hand raised.

"Yes," She replied, standing up from her chair. "There's the Cruciatus curse..." River stated carefully; not wanting to see the curse in action.

"Correct, correct, well done." The man said with a rare smile accross his face. He gestured for River to sit back down - which she happily obliged. "The torture curse." Whispered Moody as he walked over to his desk and placed the spider onto it - making it visible to the rest of the students of course.

"Crucio!" The man muttered as he pointed his wand to the poor creature. The spider writhed about on the desk in agony, letting out a few hisses every now and then. The students watched in horror, eyes wide and some jaws hanging slightly open.

Alaska refused to watch and was currently burying her head into Arthur's shoulder. The two have an unusual friendship - which started because Alaska practically forced the boy into being her friend - but regardless, the two bring out the best in each other and basically consider each other siblings. (Laska does like to refer to him as her nerdy big brother, after all.)

"STOP IT!" Hermione cried, extremely disturbed by the scene. Moody looked over to the gryffindor and immediately put an end to the curse. He picked up the spider and looked at it for a moment before clearing his throat awkwardly and walking over the the girl.

"Perhaps you could give us the last unforgivable curse, Ms Granger." Moody said relatively softly - a rare tone for the professor. Hermione shook her head and avoided eye contact with Mad-Eye. The professor sighed and looked around the classroom once more.

"How about you, Mr. Waters." He said quietly to the Hufflepuff boy towards the back whom had a scarred look on his face; his eyes widened with shock.

Berlin shifted his gaze to meet Mad-Eyes and very timidly responded, "The killing curse..."

The professor nodded slightly and pointed his wand to the spider once more. "Avada Kedavra"

The spider became lifeless almost immediantly; it was dead before it had a chance to make any last moves or noises. The students stayed completely silent, they were far too unsettled and frightened to say anything at all.

Minutes passed before Moody decided to break the silence: "There is only one person know to have ever survived the killing curse, and he's in this very room.". The man trudged over to Harry Potters desk and made direct eye contact with the boy who lived before taking one last sip from his small bottle.

"You notice how he kept drinking from that little flask?"
Theodore Nott called upon as he hopped down the steps of the North Tower.

"Yeah, and I don't reckon it's pumpkin juice." Draco said with a smirk as he followed closely behind his friend.

A smug look spread itself across Theo's face as he came up with an answer to his own question. "He's probably an addict or something."

Taylor West let a laugh escape her mouth at her friends comment, "Well, that would explain a lot, wouldn't it?"

Their first day in defense against the dark arts was quite the experience; it was both interesting and extremely unsettling - and the students couldn't help but talk about anything besides the class. For some - such as Draco, Blaise, Theo and Taylor - It was entertaining (for the most part) but for others, it was a bit traumatic...

"I mean he's even scarier than I thought!" Berlin waters exclaimed to Erik Harrison.

"But he was brilliant, don't you think?" Erik said with a small smile.

"Yeah, if you think performing unforgivable curses on an innocent creature is brilliant." Berlin huffed, slightly annoyed at his friends opinion. "He's demented..."

The two fifth years continued walking down the twisted staircase, until they were stopped by a hand being placed on Berlins shoulder.

"Are you alright?" It was Mad-Eye - he seemed to have taken notice of the poor boys terror from the experience. Berlin nodded just a bit a bit and inhaled sharply at the Professors words. "Come, come. We'll have tea. I want to show you boys something." Moody said, only leaving Berlin to be confused at the mans sudden act of kindness.

Neville Longbottom stood beside the Professor nervously, although he did have a faint look of reassurance on his face at Berlin's presence; he was glad he didn't have to go with Moody alone.

The professor began to hobble up the stairs in the direction of his classroom, expecting Neville and Berlin to follow. The hufflepuff shot a pleading look to Erik, desperate for the slytherin to get him out of the situation. Erik did nothing; he just stood there watching in amusement - letting out a few small laughs every now and then - while Berlin nervously traveled farther and farther up the stairs until he was out of sight.

It would be an understatement to say that everyones first day back was interesting. First with the experience in Mad-Eye Moody's class, then with the arrival of the French and Bulgarian guests; the students had endless things to take about. The main topic, however, was without a doubt the Triwizard Tournament. Some people were immensely looking forward to the competition, believing it would be tremendously entertaining and adrenaline rushing, while some were not fond of the tournaments concept and were everything but looking forward to it; they were practically terrified at the possibility of someone dying.

Already, a few students have began putting their names in the goblet; students that were totally capable of competing as well as students who definitely weren't. Let's just say that the Students of Hogwarts, Beauxbatons, and Durmstrang have no idea what lies ahead of them this year, neither are they ready to find out...
